CVD? $? over 1 year 3 of 10 Comments: I've had nothing but trouble with this unit. I totally surprised it receives such a high rating by others. It chokes on VCD's made by VCDEasy v2.0 (been a long time since I made one?) It works most of the time on DVD+R's made with DVDXCopy v4.0.3.8 and Adobe Encore v1.5.1. I've found that it doesn't like VBR MPEG2 files. I've reencoded MPEG/AVI files with TMPGEnc v2.59.47.155 and MainConcept MPEG encoder v1.4.2. The first 4x DVD burner (brand forgotten) I used didn't recognize DVD-R's, so I haven't tried one since. The other DVD burners I've used are both Liteon 4x LDW-851S(?) and my current unit 8x SOHW-832S. It also doesn't like a music DVD made by Audio DVD Creator v1.88. Seems to be a navigation problem. It pops up with a "Dirty Disk" error. It will play a music DVD made by DVD2One v1.5.1 (only made one). I get a audio stream drop out (my Integra looses sync), but that has been traced to a bad coax connection. Can someone tell me how to get to the "Srvice Menu" mentioned by another poster? BTW I've used a lot of different brands of CD-R & DVD+R blanks. keithw... email: keitherw@pars.net

It has been able to play any disc I've thrown at it. Even other players that refuse to play certain +R, -R, etc. discs will play in this player. Only thing that doesn't work is SVCDs and doesn't support MP3s. Another thing is it doesn't buffer the video during a layer change, so there is usually a 1 second or so pause. I've just burned my first DVD+R DL disc and it plays in this player flawlessly. Layer change went very smoothly.

CVD? $? over 1 year 9 of 10 Comments: Very nice machine, the only thing missing out on this superb player is a working region hack. What I usually throw in the CD are VCDs, SVCDs using VCD header trick, SmartBuy DVD-R (bought at canadacomputers.com and Memorex DVD+RW 4x (On special at 10$ for a box of 5 at future shop!) and it plays them all flawlessly. No failures up to now, it has been used for over 2 years.

CVD? $250 over 1 year 9 of 10 Comments: works great for the last 4+ years, but lately its been skipping on some burned dvds and scratched discs. not bad for a dvd player made before writable dvd days. ive also started getting "disc dirty" errors within the last month, with age, i think the drive is more sensitive to dust. picture quality is great on this machine. im using the component output. the player never malfunctioned. i woulda given it at 10 if it played certain brands of dvd+/-r discs smoother.

We should see some other tests to be sure, though.

N/A 9 of 10 DVD-WMA DVD-MP3 MP3 long filename MP3 ID3 TAG Comments: I've had this dvd player for almost 4 years. i've never once had a problem with the unit with any sort of dvd's +-rw. i've only had to clean the laser a couple of times. it has optical output and component video output. It's the best picture and sound that i've ever had. i would never buy any other type of product other than a sony.

CVD? $150 N/A 9 of 10 Comments: This is a great player. Very Reliable. No problems since I bought this player like 2 1/2 years back. Plays VCDs very good. Do not plays SVCDs. But when you use the VCD Header Trick, it recognises the movie as VCD. But the only major problem is I am having this Audio Sync problem for this kind of files. Other than the SVCD Compatibility issues, this is an excellent player.

CVD? $90 N/A 8 of 10 MP3 long filename MP3 ID3 TAG MPEGISO Comments: I give it an 8 for being reliable, but I wish it did more. It doesn't play MP3s or SVCDs. You can use the SVCD header trick on it, but I find the audio is way out of sync on playback when it isn't on the disc so the header trick doesn't quite work on it right. As long as you know what you're getting into and you're buying it only to support what I've listed, you won't be dissapointed. I've searched high and low though - can't find a region/macrovision hack for this unit - ah well. It's sliding into the "where are they now" category for the features it leaves out, but it's reliable.

Tried only TDK 700MB disks could not get TDK 650MB to work though. No problem with VCD disks Would like to try DVDR if only I had a DVD burner

Far better than VHS any way! ;) It seems quit sensitive about dirty DVD´s, which brings me to THE BIG QUESTION: WHAT DVD+R/RW´s WORK ON THE NS400D?! The Verbatim +R and +RW´s I´ve got DO NOT work. CVD? $200 N/A 7 of 10 Comments: I purchased this DVD player some 18 months and am still impressed enough to hang on to it. It plays every single make of DVD-R/RW I can throw at it although I have had a couple of Datasafe +RW discs that it didn't like, I think it is really compatible. I have made loads of VCD's in the past to including photographic slideshows and it loves them If you are going to buy a standalone DVD player then you need to make sure you get a good picture. This Sony has a precision drive and offers excellent quality picture. The Sound on Sony DVD's and most DVD's is rubbish so eventually you will end up buying an amp + speakers and only then will you have sound that matches the picture . . . Heaven ! Good luck in your choice and if you go for this one then you will not be disappointed :-)

MP3 WMA CVD? $250 N/A 9 of 10 DVD-MP3 MP3 long filename MP3 ID3 TAG Comments: I bought mine right when it first came out because I wanted a Sony and I wanted the built-in 5.1 decoder. I recently tried playing movies on DVD-R and DVD+R. They were burned on a Pioneer DVR-A05/105 and a Sony DRU500A. The media used so far were Ritek 1x and 4x and Apple DVD-Rs (dunno the mfg) and Memorex DVD+Rs. The software used to back-up the movies was DVDXCopy and DVD Decrypter. I had one instance where the NS400D had a few hiccups when playing a DVD-R.. the screen would freeze, so I just had to skip over that spot. Otherwise, playing DVD-Rs and DVD+Rs has been relatively trouble free. The only thing I wish it could do is play MP3s, then it would be a 10.

I have HP DVD 200e and have tried using the HP DVD writer software as well as Nero and currently am trying GEAR Pro. I need to fill the disk up more and try again. I tried testing it all with only 20mb on the disk.

The player is worth an investiment in my words...so keep it up Sony.
