I got this player free with a TV in a World Cup promotion from Comet.
The Remote Control Region hack worked using an IBM Workpad C3 (Palm V) and Omniromote Software and I saved the 50£ chipping costs 'SUCCESS'.
SVCD do not play as I have Firmware Version 1.6~ I think, I have not tried the header trick yet.
Picture Quality is superb.
Sound ? as I am using TV speakers.
Very quiet compared to my MINATO G1 but thats not hard |

| you can make these players play svcd using the headertrick and then burning with nero.however dont use cd writing wizard to do it choose new compilation ,vcd, then uncheck both the create standard compliant cd box AND the use cdi application box svcd mpegs should now play but I have no idea as to the maximum bitrates as I havent tried them out yet. good luck |

Hola a todos.
Tengo que decir, lo primero, que éste reproductor SI lee VCD y SVCD, incluídas todas sus variantes (al menos las que yo he probado :o), tales como CVCD, XVCD, XSVCD...) realizados tanto con DVD2SVCD como con TMPGEnc, e indistintamente a partir de DVD o DivX/Xvid. Yo no sé si estas gentes que dicen que no lo lee habrán creado bien los (S)VCD, esto es, a partir de Nero o VCDImager (DVD2SVCD ya te deja las imágenes BIN listas para quemar -medianteCDRWin, por ejemplo-). El caso es que es un gran reproductor, que según me han comentado y he leído, lee ambos tipos de DVD's (re)grabables (DVD+R/RW, DVD-R/RW) y con una muy buena calidad de imagen y sonido, a un precio más que razonable.
Os lo recomiendo.

hi there,
i bought mine (sony ns 305)before october 2002 and it does not play svcd. today i have called the sony service center and they told me they are willing to fix/upgrade it for free so that svcd can be played as well. the address they gave me is: sony service center, edisonstr. 7, 70734 fellbach (which is in germany near stuttgart).
you have to include a copy of your receipt.

C'est un EC1 avec ______ du 22/12/2002 sur la carton.
Image superbe (j'avais un tokai 715) et son des mp3 formidable.
Il lit sans aucun problème:
-les XVCD - 704x576 VBR Pal.
-VCD Photos avec dossiers et menus créés avec WinOnCD 5
-les SVCD
Comment fait on pour connaître la version du firmware?

Some people posted that they couldn't select chapters on a SVCD. I wonder, if they read the manual carefully.
Assume, we made a copy with DVD2SVCD, section CD-Image, VCDXBuild, DVD chapters, PBC use playlist.On a SVCD created in this way, you cannot select the chapters with the skip-forward/backward-button as on a DVD. According to the manual you have to use the search-mode-button (in my case I have to press it twice) and then, to select the chapter's number, the up/down/right/left-button in the middle of the remote.Then finally press 'Enter'.

| According to the book it does not play SVCD so tried the header trick, well that did not work so I burned a compliant SVCD onto a CD-RW and it played fine, the menu displayed but I could not navigate. |

I´ve just bought my version EC2 underlined, firmware 1.902 in Spain.
Great picture and sound quality
I burned some SVCD with dvd2vcd 1.1.0 and nero 5.5 but neither selectable subtitles nor fixed menus would work. Selectable chapters worked fine.
No problems in reading a 100 minutes oberburned CD-R SVCD.

i tested svcd, vcd and mp3 on cd-r/-rw all work fine, navigation on mp3-cd´s is a litle bit difficult,
dvd+rw also work, forward and backward search works in all speeds, svcd tracks and menues work (testet with nero 5.5.10.0)
hardly no problems, except no support of mp3 on dvd :-(

| je confirme que mon lecteur avec la mention "EC1 souligné" sur le carton d'emballage est capable de lire les SVCD générés par Tsunami 2.510 (réglages de base dans l'onglet SVCD PAL en VBR 2-pass) et gravé via NERO 5.5.10.0. Prochaine étape : la création de menus au démarrage. Qualité d'image effectivement très correcte; très rares artefacts dans les mouvements. |

My player is an "old" one (without a line under EC1) but it can read MPEG 2 with the header trick. I used the following tools :
- TMPGenc for creating the MPEG 2 and multiplexing in VCD (non standard)
- Nero for burning the cdr-w
And that works without any problem !

Bought mine in Germany, can play SVCDs and selectable audio tracks but no selectable CVD subtitles of the SVCD. SVCD tracks and menus do not seem to work.
DVD picture and sound quality is superb.
MP3 playback is very handy with long filename and multisession CD-R support! You wouldn't want a cheap player with 8-character-file name again... However, program and shuffle is not supported with MP3 playback.
I made mine region code free with a Palm and the remote control software Omniremote by the method posted on vcdhelp.com for DVP-NS405. See here:

Bought multi-region chipped from Richer Sounds UK for GBP150. EC1 (underlined) version.
Support (displays) MP3 albums (folders) and tracks (files) in on-screen display (tv). Easy to move between mp3 tracks.
Displays first 33 characters of filename on-screen and displays whole long filename on DVD player display.
Manual states - does NOT support (display) ID3tags and this is true.
Does not have random or programmable for mp3 CD's.
Last two points are a shame, however having tried other DVD players (Toshiba SD420E)the ability to move between folders and tracks and read what they are by far outweighs the ability to programme tracks IMO. Also between filenames and ID3tags I'd choose filenames.
I couldn't find a DVD player which offered the full monty - long filenames, ID3tags, programmable and random.
Officially supports VCD and will play SVCD too.
Very pleased with player, would like a DVD player with more mp3 playback functionality but still this one beats Toshiba's hand down as that only displayed fist 6 characters or something like that. The Toshiba also wouldn't play all my mp3's whereas the Sony has had no problems so far. Will play mp3 on CDRW and discs do not have to be finalised.

Great player, I've tested it with vcd,svcd,xvcd and mp3 over cd-r and cd-rw support.
I bought it with underlined EC2 label on the box.
Found in the box 3 movies.
In the near future I'll buy a dvd burner (+ and -) and I'll test the player.
I tried to enable "menu option" in nero burning when I burn svcd, but I don't see anything on the player...only the movie I burned on.
