Aun no he probado con DVD+R.

VCD: Dvddecripter / TMPGEnc / Nero6
DVD: DVDFab / Nero6

Media:
DVD Player: MSI DVD Rom
DVD Recorder: LG DVD BURN 8x

Even though its a pretty old dvd player, it still does its job. I am not fussed about CD-R support really. It supports CD-RW (I use Packard Bell - 20 CD-RW for £15 at PC World..!), and i burn VCD/KVCD/SVCD (header trick) at 10-12x speed, and plays OK, sometimes has little problems but when you leave it for a few seconds it gets back to you!
Ive also tried tried Imation DVD+RW, it works fine, for some reason when I burnt a backup dvd it says Its scratched, but it works fine on my PC. thats happened only once.

Overall, dont buy this if you can buy another dvd player. lol, but if its going cheap and u are not too fussed about its features and just want to watch dvds, kvcds, etc its OK.

This is actually a pretty sweet player for being 2-3 years old. I just recently got a DVD burner (TDK 840G) and was kind of surprised to see that this player doesn't have any problems playing back the various types and brands of discs I've thrown at it so far.

Here is a list of what I have verified to work:

- TDK DVD+R
- Imation DVD+RW
- Memorex and TDK CD-RWs
- VCDs @ standard bitrate (1150 kbps).
- SVCDs @ no more than 2500 kbps and you have to use the TMPGenc header trick.
- Region free hack.

What doesn't work:

- Any type of CDR.
- VCDs or SVCDs with >2500 kbps video.

The region free hack works, look elsewhere on this site for information on it. There is also a remote control hack for macrovision, but I never tried it other than accessing it in the menu.

Basically, if you can find this player on Ebay or somewhere else used, it's a good deal. But nowadays there are a lot of other players out there for cheap that can match this player and do more.

Comments:
I've had this player for 2½ years. This is an okay player for DVD, but essentially worthless now for VCD/SVCD. It only likes Fuji CD-R rated no faster than 24x. I can't find this media anymore. It also can handle most CD-RW, but only if you burn really slow (like 2x). It can play SVCD only if you use the header-trick and only if it's NTSC. It can handle PAL VCD just fine, but not PAL SVCD with the header trick. Don't know about PAL DVD.

DVD plays okay but I notice a kind of shimmering effect on very bright scenes. Not sure if this is due to the chroma bug or what. The player is also a little loud. I can hear it spinning from across the room. And it plays very hot. This is probably not very good for the life of the player or your discs.

The remote is too simple and doesn't have any numbers. You're going to have to use a universal remote to get into the Easter Eggs on Terminator 2 for example.

And if your discs have even the slightest scratch or smudge the player freezes and sometimes starts playing again from the beginning. Forget about using this one for rentals. Mine is starting to show its age and now even balks at discs with no obvious problems and that my other players can handle just fine.

The only thing "special" about this player is that it will display the Jacket Art on a disc when you hit the stop button. This is a background image encoded on some discs which I think is intended for identifying the disc when used in a DVD-Jukebox. Not too many discs have Jacket Art, but some are nice, like the one for Big Trouble in Little China.

All in all a pretty mediocre player and not really good for anything you burn yourself. Probably can't find this one in stores anymore.

Bane of my life. It worked fine for a while, but got more and more capricious as time went on. Three months before my warranty ran out I had enough of it stopping halfway through movies and refusing to play certain chapters (some would even freeze the player). I took it back to Sony twice and they claimed it worked fine, although were unable to explain why it wouldn't play dvds (including brand-new ones) that played fine on several other machines. I've given up on Sony and replaced it with a Kenwood DVF-3070, which cost less and provides a much better picture and far less hassle. In conclusion, steer clear of this one; it's the twitchiest dvd player I've ever seen.

1)DVD Decrypter
2)DVD Fab for splitting/striping
3)Clone DVD for ceating an iso
4)Nero 6 Plat. for burning to disc
5)Use either Memorex 4x DVD+RW or Fujifilm 2.4x DVD+R but either way do no burn faster than 2.4x
6)Get a Memorex Dual X burner

I have NO coasters!! Not even my first disc! I am using the fujifilm as we speak.

Hello everybody and excuse me for my poor english.

Could you tell me if I use SVCD and XVCD format if disk which are burned as PAL will be ok on PAL TV ? I mean is the picture colored ?

I ask this question because I have read on that forum this : "In UK SVCD cannot be played as the player defaults to NTSC mode even if disk is burned as PAL, they play back in black and white or in most cases not at all."
Thank you very much for your attention... and your answer

No luck with CD-R.

Only got one audio disc on cd-rw to work, and it only tracked for about a minute.

Very happy with DVD-R support.

Burner: Pioneer 106D

Media 1: Princo 4X burned @ 4x - works great, all the way to the end of the movie.

Media 2: RiData (ritek) G04 @ 4x - again, works fine, no tracking problems at all, right up to the end of the movie.

Hi Folks: I had REALLY bad luck playing VCD on this player. In fact my luck was so bad I am going to sell it and buy another DVD player that fares better in this area. I tried two CD writers and four types of media. I got 1 CD to read out of 8 combinations. The bad news. It is NOT repeatable! I tried the good combination with another cut and it failed. I was very surprised when I read that this DVD supported VCD at all.

Do not buy this player.

This may be old information for some but I think I need to share my personal observations on how different burners affect playability on the DVD player (Sony NS-300).
I have noticed that my Old Sony CDRW (SCSI based) drive is more sucessful at creating usable VCDs for the Sony NS-300 DVD player than my Pioneer DVR-105 burner. The same content (352x240 ntsc) and blank CDRs (fujifilm 16x) were used in the test. The working VCD was burned on the Sony burner at 1x. The other VCD was burned at 4x on the pioneer.
The pioneer burned VCD comes up with a menu half the time and sometimes plays for 10 min. without totally locking up. Even then there are audio "pop" and video "artifacts" all the time when it plays making it unusable.
I think that it is most likely the fact that the Sony burner can burn at 1x and 2x where the Pioneer can only burn CDRs at 4x.

I have been trying, it seems like forever and without much success, to burn VCD's on CDRW media with Nero5 and 6. I finally contacted Sony hoping that they had a better answer. Now, I love all my Sony equipment... Vid Cams, Dig Cams, Dig Audio Recorders, Vaio laptop, Receivers, etc... but this DVD player has been a real pain in the #%$!

I hope this is helpful information to a few more of us still struggling to burn VCD's. Here is what Sony Tech's provided me with when asked why it always gives a "No Disc" error:

Thank you for contacting SONY Online Support.

Please note that the Sony DVP-NS300 cannot play CD-Rs and CD-ROMs.
Commercially produced Video CDs use an international digital video standard
which is accepted and supported throughout the world. They use the same
digital video format used by the motion picture, film, & television
industry, as well as the computer industry.

The commercially produced Video CD format contains both audio and video
on a 12cm (or 8cm) disc. The video data rate is 1.44 megabits/sec (video and
audio). The video compression used is MPEG 1 and the disc uses a 2
Channel-MPEG sound track.

Your Sony DVD Player does have the ability to recognize and playback
Video CD discs as long as they are "commercially-produced" and copyrighted
discs. These units are not designed to be compatible with VCDs that are
created (burned) using CD-Recordable drives, or other recording units.
Although it is possible that some of these discs may work, the player is not
designed, or supported, to do so.

Also, we recommend you verify that the Video CD is U.S. NTSC-compliant
(the United States NTSC Video format). The units are not compatible with the
PAL, SECAM or Non-US NTSC Video formats.

If you are able to play commercially-produced, U.S. NTSC-compliant Video
CD's in the unit, the unit is working up to Sony factory specifications.

Also please note that, your DVD player has a region code printed on the
back of the unit and will only play DVDs that are labeled with an identical
region code (it should say on the label of the DVD what region it will play
in).

NOTE: Some DVD-Rs, DVD-RWs,CD-Rs or CD-RWs cannot be played on this player
due to the recording quality or physical condition of the disc, or the
characteristics of the recording device. The disc will not play if it has
not been correctly finalized.

Comments:
Every CD-RW disk I have tried with this recorder using DVD2SVCD and burning with Nero work 100% of the time. I have been using GQ CD-RW disk. Cheap and found at Fry's Electronics. I cant seem to get CD-Rs to work.

Also, This DVD Player use to frustrate me with DVD+Rs. I found it to be really picky with media. But it was the software combination. Using DVDDecrypter, DVD2One, and RecordNowMax Stomp to burn, the media is all playable. Even some of the DVD Backups that I burned with Nero that didnt work, when I burned them with RecordNowMax Stomp, played flawlessly.

Definately works with GQ DVD+RWs, Maxell DVD+Rs, Ritek DVD+Rs (bulk spindles).
