DVD-MPEGISO

Comments:
Sony DVP-NC675P/B version

Hello, this player will play dvd+rw backup dvd and dvd-r dvd, but they must be in dvd-video format, aka with a directory structure of .ifo and vob files. You can not burn your mpeg-1 and mpeg-2 files on a dvd in ISO file format (no authoring). For example, with nero you can choose dvd-rom (iso) and just drop your mpeg1, mpeg2 or vob files on the comp window and burn. This results in a disk that some players will play and show you a menu which contains your mpeg or vob file. Once again, this sony player will not read a disk made this way. I am trying DVD-VCD, DVD-SVCD and converting mpegs to vobs then authoring, but I think this may be too much trouble. For anybody reading this that may be interested in burning disks with no authoring, I have a Cyberhome, Apex and a Memorex player that works perfect for burning disk in this format. If I have time, I will add user comments to this forum for those DVD players. This player will play vcd and svcds made on a cd-r. I have not paid to much attention on picture quality. If anybody has a firmware hack to make this player read DVD-MPEGISO, please email me at mynyknicks247atYahoo.com. Thanks

Like the 875 (SACD version) I took back, this player displays an awful picture, and I returned it as well. I'm surprised that no one else has made mention of this, and it makes me wonder if I am doing something wrong when hooking these players up. I have two previous-generation (Precision Drive 2) changers, the 655 and the 665, and they both work flawlessly, delivering beautiful pictures on my two Sony TVs. I used the same component cables for the old and new players, but the 675 and 875 both displayed very grainy, "jaggy" pictures (I also tried hookups via S-video and composite -- same disappointing result). The older 655 and 665 both produced very sharp, vibrant, "non-jaggy" pictures. I'm stumped. Now I'm hunting for another 665, but they are very hard to find...

I hope my older Sonys last a while!

First off, I am not a gigantic Sony fan. I used to be about 3-4 yrs back. I bought a 53in XBR projection TV and have had problems with it for 4 years. Unfortunately or fortunately, whatever way you look at it, everthing with the exception of my VCR is Sony. The 1st DVD player I bought was a Sony S530D which was $399 in 1999 and the second a phillips 642 (which is an awesome cheap DVI player $69.) This is my third, $116 at circuitcity.com - or rather circuitshitty as I like to call them :-P

The problem that I had with the Sony S530D was that it didnt play many of my "backup" dvds. It served me well for 4 years but it was time for an upgrade. Two weeks ago, I grabbed a Sony 725P DVD player from BustBuy for $99. Now, take in mind, that I have over 250 "backup" DVDs. I sat down for about 6 hours and tried every single DVD backup I had with the player. The 725 did well, with about 90% success. The only ones that didnt play were the cheaper "platnium" DVD-Rs from Microcenter. Needless to say, I did take it back.

I received the Sony 675 on Friday, 6/10/04 - of course I sat down YET AGAIN and went through every single backup dvd I had. EVERY single one played. I went through the menu and skipped through 2 chapters per backup DVD. I attribute the success due to Sony's new Precision Driveâ„¢ 3. The Sony 725P had a Precision Driveâ„¢ 2. The Precision Driveâ„¢ 3 is supposed to have the best readable mechanism available.

Keep in mind, this is a multiple disc DVD player. I didnt think I would like that, but watching backup copies of Farscape, this unit is very pleasing. Nice not having to get up and change discs after every two episodes. It is a little loud when changing discs, but I can live with it.

Also keep in mind, that this is the ONLY Precision Driveâ„¢ 3 Sony DVD player that is in BLACK and has OPTICAL AUDIO OUT. The single disk Sony 575 does NOT have optical out. Only Coax digital.

Another thing to consider is the fact that my OLD Sony S530D remote works with the 675 perfectly. The new remote with the 675 did not work with my receiver.

Here are the types of DVD media I have in my collection. These were burned with either a NEC 2500A or LiteOn 851SX units.

Imation DVD +R 4x
Ritek DVD +R 4x
Platnium DVD +R 4x from Microcenter
Platnium DVD -R 4x from Microcenter

Bottom line, this unit has played everything I throw at it, its black which matches all of my other components, and has optical audio out.

CONS:

Takes a little time to load a DVD.
Remote does not work well with legacy Sony products.
Display on the unit itself only shows time the disc has been running. My old Sony showed title/chapter/time.
Its a little large and may not fit into your home theater case.

Lastly, it may be a little difficult to find this unit presently. I think it is because it is a brand new unit. The only two places I have seen it is at circuitcity and compusa. Course you can buy it from Sony.com... Do NOT buy this unit from Compusa, they have a 14 day return policy and if the box is opened, you will pay a 15% restocking fee. Circuitcity has a 30 day return policy with no restocking fee. I am NOT endorsing CircuitShitty.

Try it and if you dont like it take it back :-)

I have a DVP-NC665p got stolen, and got the 675 for replacement, it basically play everything the same as 665, only with a slimer body, I do think it plays little better picture than the 665,and no special setting for playing SVCD,the 665 has to set it at 16:9 to play SVCD. I like the DVP-NC cause it could change disc while playing other disc and resume from stop point, and it play everything I needed, that's all I want. Also it cost cheaper than the 665.
It plays MP3 ,Jpeg(tested) ,DVD, SVCD(Audio select but no CVD sub), VCD, VCD on DVD-R, I use most Retek 04 or Prodisk DVD-R disk, play with no problem

Good progressive scan 5-disc DVD player. Has played DVD-R (Princo, Ritek), DVD-RW (Imation, Ritek) as well as CD-R (Verbatim, TDK) and CD-RW (Memorex, Imation). Picture is good with composite, S-Video and component outputs. Audio is good with composite and digital. So far in less than one month it hasn't given me any hiccups. I picked this up online from www.dealznet.com for $111 + shipping. The price was lower than the big electronics stores in my area.
Worth the inexpensive price for a 5-disc changer.
