It's been a terrific player. No issued with any CD-R or CD-RW discs I've thrown at it. Most DVD-R discs have worked fine, except for TDK 8X DVD-R, which skipped on it. I primarily use Taiyo-Yudens now, and they work fine on this player.

I've also been reusing a Verbatim 1X DVD-RW for a while now, and though slow, it plays just fine on this player as well. Wish it would handle the MPEG-4 (DivX, etc.), but I guess it's too old for that.

I was really happy with this player until recently none of the DVD+R disks I got from my friend works. Some of the SVCD disks only play the last 10, 15 minutes. I took these DVD+R disks to Best Buy, tried all of the Sony and none of them read these disks. If anybody gives me a clue, that would be great. Other than that I think it's a very good DVD player. Picture quality is excellent.
I ended up buying a JVCXVN50BK because I need a second DVD player anyway. The JVC can play anything I couldn't play on the Sony but the picture quality is nowhere near the Sony's.

I always use Ritek G04 Disk(from 1x to 4x), It work best for me,I have also try Optodisc 4X DVD-R, Princo 4X DVD-R, Prodisc 4X DVD-R,non of that work well, some can't even play in the player. I use DVD Shrink 2.2 to rip the DVD, then burn in Nero 5.5.10.20, or use Tmpgenc 2.5 pro to encode and DVD workshop to author and burn on sony DRU500A firmware F2.0 at 4x speed, I never had one coaster with this combination,I am using Ritek G04 RiDATA 4X DVD-R now, I could even play every VCD-on-DVD disk with this player.
For VCD or SVCD is even easier, It play all brands of CD I throw in it,I have use memorex, verbatim, imitation,TDK,Sony,Ridek, and some other no brand disks, but I have found the Ridek CD-R 48x is not good for burning,I have 2 out of 4 coaster with this disk when burning,I use sony DRU500a or Plextor 16/10/40A at 24x and 16x speed only, but the sucess disk have no problem to play on this player, it's only is the disk quality problem there. afterall, I have use this player for almost a year, and it give me no problem, I'm very happy with it.

My second DVD player, my second Sony DVD Player. First one lasted 6 years without a hitch and it was time to upgrade.

Don't know why there are some many complaints about this player, it has played just about everything I have thrown at it.

Great picture and sound quality, hopefully I will get many years out of this player, too.

It was able PLAY PAL VCDs on NTSC tv. Though I believe it can do conversion to DVD too, but I do not have any PAL DVD to test. I tried standard SVCD, VCDs and VCD on on DVD(2 VCD movies on single DVD without up-converting).

One star less for inability to play highly-scratched discs( it is skipping the video), where as same disc played with little skipping on DELL laptop.

CD-R works perfectly everytime!

480 x 480 SVCD in 16:9 format also plays very nice. Don't have anything to compare it to, but the image is pretty good. Gets blurry when motion is present, but overall pretty close to DVD quality. I am burning a cartoon, which, I think, do more compression than video/film. Maybe motion distortions will not be as apparent with regular movies.

I tried to burn 720 x 480 SVCD and that worked fine with one exception -- the image got stretched from 16:9 to full screen format. Tried many different things, but no luck. The MPEG plays as 16:9 on the computer (DivX 5 Pro), but when it is burned with VCDEasy or Nero it becomes full screen.

Finally, tried to make menus with VCDEasy and Nero 6.0 Ultra. To no avail. It's like they are not there! The movie stars, plays fine and all the work put into menus just gets ignored...

Finally, people were complaining about chapters not working. They don't work when I try use the regular track skip button. Press "Search Mode" a couple of times until I get to chapters mode and then I can navigate through preestablished chapters. I also burned chapters as separate MPEGs and then the track skip button works, albeit there is a slight delay in the movie.

Absolutely great machine. Very happy with it. It plays anything that was burned properly. Some changers have difficulty playing replicated movies; this one plays them fine. I use a Sony burner with dvd+r blanks (any brand). I used to think that my Apex was the only player that would play anything. Not any more. This player rocks!

I purchased this player after my Phillips 5 disc died. I actually went through two others before getting to this one. All vcd's worked great and all svcd's seemed great for the first two weeks. Since then, the sound and picture don't quite sync. It's obviously annoying. I've played around but have yet to find an answer. Great player if this can be fixed. If anyone has a clue....please post a reply. And no, it's not as simple as just hitting stop and play.
Thanks

Very nice if you don't care about chapter or good FF/RR support. Plays every SVCD I've tried, on 4 different media types. Though I always make sure my SVCD's are 100% standard.

There is no support for my SVCD chapters though. I always put 9 chapters on every disc, but it says there is only one. I used vcdeasy to make the image and burned with Nero. The chapters work on my JVC single disc player, and on my JVC changer.

Takes about 3.5 minutes to FF through an entire disc of 45 minutes. Maybe I'm just picky, but I find that VERY annoying.

There is no support for selectable subtitles. My JVC single disc changer supports them fine.

If it wasn't for the fact that when I push Play it says Super VCD Play, I might think the SVCD support was unintentional, accidental, or maybe even just beta. I suppose that last one is still a possibility, the manual mentions only Video CD.

Have owned it for 7 months; convenient and overall good quality audio/video. All DVD's (DD5.1 and DTS) played fine -- I've watched hundreds of movies on it, thanks to netflix. Some cool features like the real time DVD bitrate display. Doesn't play some of the non-standard SVCDs (all SVCDs made by standard way worked), Does have the Chroma bug (pixellation for red/magenta dominant images in certain conditions.) But for progressive scan player under $200, no complains.

Just brought this 2 days ago,Glad I have read Matrix post before buying it,fix the SVCD problem right away, plays all of my homemade DVD,SVCD,VCD,VCD on DVD using standard bitrate great, but play some of the commercial chinese movie VCD blockly and don't even support the subtitle or cheater , I don't know is it a CVD,but it say VCD on the case, I play them with selectable subtitle and chapter fine on my old pioneer DV 505s and Daewoo 5800 , but the disk I created plays very well, picture quality is great, even VCD and SVCD, espacially the SVCD created with DVD2SVCD,almost like the original,it'll support the track using search mode (first you have to push the search mode button twice till it search all the cheapter out, then you could enter the cheapter # and push enter),kind of troublesome, but VCD or DVD created with Ulead DVD Workshop(also with menu) or VCDeasy can use the next and prev button to move on, no SVCD nor CVD subtitle supported, mostly I use cheap brand CDR and DVD-R disk,I can't remember all of them, what ever cost less, and all that works,I burned them all with Max speed using sony DRU500a,also it change and load disk fast, and will automatic go to the next disk after one is finish, and resume from whatever point you stop on any disks, even after the machine had been turning off, this is a very great feature,I don't mind it lack of the zoom feature, cause I don't use it.all I want is a DVD change could plays all my disks.

I would like to say that after reading all the reviews on this player there were some that were to be taken with a grain of salt. You people that have claimed the SVCD support was insiffient raised a question in my mind as to why were others not having any problem. After my testing here are the results:

Played everything I threw at it no problem with the exception of one small bug. Let me explain. Others have stated that SVCD would play for a few seconds then stop or switch discs on them. I looked into this a little deeper and now have the answer for you as to why this happens.
When playing SVCD encoded to 16:9 the disc will indeed stop after a few seconds and switch to the next disc only IF your aspect ratio is set to 4:3 Letterbox or 4:3 Pan and Scan in the player settings. When it started this nonsense I stopped the disc, went in and changed it to 16:9 and tried again. It did the same thing. I then powered down the unit and powered it back up, hit play and it played flawlessly. The conclusion here is that you must set your aspect ration to 16:9 prior to playing an SVCD encoded as such. SVCD looked outstanding for me on this player.

Tested CD,DVD,DVD-R(Maxell),DVD-RW(Sony),VCD,SVCD,and MP3.
Everyting played fine.

Ergonomically the unit is very nice and has a great remote. It does lack a zoom feature but who really uses that anyway. I did not lower my rating to 9 out of 10 for having the SVCD bug simply due to the fact that it is hard to find a good player that supports everyting I need. I have gone through 4 players in 5 days in search of something I could call my own. I am landing on this one. Yes, it's a progressive player. I got this unit from J&R Music World Online for 169.99 before shipping. I highly recommend this unit and this merchant.

Purchased this from BestBuy for $199.00

So far it's played the following and flawlessly I might say too.

VCD, SVCD, MP3s on CDR & CDRW, DVD-R, and DVD+RW and of course DVDs.

It has true progressive scanning with 3:2 pulldown and pixel by pixel conversion using a 12bit 108mhz DAC. Something usually only high-end DVD players have.

I like the bitrate viewer (shows both audio&video bitrate), layer viewer, the block noise reduction (which works well on VCDs), playback memory is great for remembering each DVDs audio, subtitles, video EQ, digital noise reduction and other settings.

MP3 playback works great and it displays long filenames(but not ID3 tag info)and even scrolls them on the front LCD display. It played VBR bitrates that exceeded 750kpbs as I encoded them at professional quality levels and CBR was tested up to 320kpbs.

It also supports 480x480 DVD-R and DVD+RW playback which a lot of DVD players either don't play or handle well. What this means to you is that you can take a 3 or 4 disc SVCD movie and transfer them to one DVD-R/DVD+RW more easily by changing the first header and re-encoding the audio and... well you get the idea without going thru the process. Short story is that you don't have to re-encode the video to a true standard complaint DVD resolution.

A few people mentioned that it doesn't support VCD/SVCD chapters/indexs or menus, but it did just fine for me. I made the SVCDs with Ulead DVD MovieFactory. They had multiple page menus with background music and various chapters/indexes to which you could go directly to. Also if the CUE file for the VCD/SVCD movie has indexes in it(most do now) you can jump directly to that spot in the movie by using either the search mode or the chapter/index command from the display menu.

The remote is actually pretty damn good, the only negative is that it's not backlight.

Well that's enough as there is too much to list. It's nice to see Sony finally making some kickass DVD players again...never thought I would say that!

P.S. this model the DVP-NC655P contains the same guts, chips, precision drive 2, menus, remote(slightly different), DACs, and features as the DVP-NS715P, except it's a 5 disc changer.

Thanks

I had posted that my DVD+R backups did not play. I have to correct that.

I retested all of them and realized the ones that I used DVD Decrypter and DVD2One all worked perfectly.

The original 2 I had tested were ripped with the same ripper, run through INFOEDIT and then rencoded and dencoded using ReMGE2 to shrink size. Thes DVD+R would not play. Great machine love it.
