| I got a few CD Rs (VCD) to work in this. Princo Silver/Blue CD-Rs work every time. Others take tricks. DVD+Rs and DVD+RWs seem to work fine, at least the ones I've tried. Those are Memorex and I have included this data in Media reports. I am going to test Ritek DVD+Rs next once I get enough video ready to fill one up. |

I haven't found a CD-R this player likes.
I have had luck with this player using Sony high speed rewritables. I have only tried VCDs but it's likely that audio cds would work too.
I find the autoplay feature, where it loads the previously viewed disk on startup, annoying. I called sony support asking if there was a way to disable this and was told how it's impossible since the dvds are encoded to start themselves. That's some amazing technology there if the discs can tell the player to load them from there position in the carousel. At any rate if you power the player using the "open tray" button you can prevent the player from autoloading the discs.

| I have tried to create a number of DVD's for use on the SONY. However, the only disk that works consistently is the Verbatum DVD+R. Packard Bell, Memorex and Ricoh disks all failed to work. Although they do work occaisionally on my Scan DVD player. |

I am having success using TDK CD-R's that I got from Staples a few months ago. Can't get any other CDR's to work at all. These TDK's are working with CD AUDIO, and VCD. These are the 80 minute versions.
Here is the info from CDR identifier:
ATIP: 97m 24s 01f
Disc Manufacturer: Taiyo Yuden Company Ltd.
Reflective layer: Dye (Long strategy; e.g. Cyanine, Azo etc.)
Media type: CD-Recordable
Recording Speeds: min. unknown - max. unknown
nominal Capacity: 702.83MB (79m 59s 73f / LBA: 359848)

My main objective was to play audio CD-Rs. As noted with other reviewers, this player is very selective.
Consolidating everyones data(thanks everyone), I tested the following media using a Mitsumi 4802-TE burner (dated) and Easy CD Creator 5 Platinum.
Findings:
CD-Rs
YES--Princo Silver/Blue @ IOProducts.com
NO--STI aka Jensen @ Circuit City
NO--EWorks @ OfficeMax
NO--TDK
CD-RWs
YES--TDK 4X @ Circuit City
In the end: Princo is the least expensive of the two, <.40/CD. I noticed some have not had the same success. A thought, is to ask IO for a sample disk to test--Thus reducing your testing outlay. I am not sure IO will go for it, but it's worth asking before dropping $20 on 50 non-compatible CDs.
Good Luck!

I have tried the Princo Silver/Blue CD-R as well as the Imation CD-R with no luck - unlike everyone else I suppose. Both brands work fine in a newer player, but I was really hoping the carousel would support it.
The Sony is a great machine. I hate the title screen though since half is wasted. I also don't like that it loads when it starts up, without any chance to stop it and make it go to a different DVD. These are minor inconveniences, though. |

the princo blue/silver obviously work from posts below, but what nobody has said, and i found out, is that the vcd header trick works, so you can play svcd's after a little work: http://www.vcdeasy.org/modules.php?name=_Guides&id=VcdTrick
do a little reading, make it VCD2.0 MPEG-1 non standard and you are in business. I used no playback control when burning with vcdeasy, it might work but i really dont care. anybody with specific questions about this player is more than welcome to email me at chriscook02@yahoo.com
please read the guides though, dont waste both of our time
used isobuster to extract from bin/cue
TMPGenc to multiplex to vcd 2.0 with no playback control
vcdeasy to burn at 4x

Played backup copy of DVD movie on Memorex 2x DVD+R with excellent results. Perfect 5.1 digital sound played back.
This was recorded on a SRU-500a drive.
Very happy with the player and love the on screen disk organizer, but wish it was much quicker and offered more space to title movies. Many titles have to be abbreviated. |

| I tried several different CD-RW's. I only got the TDK brand recorded at 4x speed to work using Easy CD Creater vrsn 5.x Platinum. I ordered the Silver/Blue CD-R via the internet from IO Products (650) 594-0377 and they worked great. At 1/3 the cost, I think I'll stick with the Silver/Blue CD-R's. |

It plays VCD with menus and jpegs flawlessly as created and burned from Nero 5.5.9.0 at 32x on Princo Silver/Blue media from $16 50 pack spindle purchased at
http://www.ioproducts.com/bulpaccdrmed.html
I tried Memorex (Green 12x), Prime Peripherals (Green 12x) and PNY Black Diamond (16x) CD-Rs without success.
I am happy with this player and I especially like the on-screen disk explorer feature. I just wish it was a progressive scan DVD player and that it played SVCD.

Followup to my prior report: Princo Silver/Blue CD-R's work like a charm! Others have reported this, so I took a shot at buying a spindle of them from a Yahoo Shops merchant for about $40. The Sony 860 read CD-R I burned on the Princo media with no problems.
The Princo may be cheap, "off-brand" but they work. The recording side seems much lighter than the typical CD-R, so that may be they work on the Sony 860.
Ironically, it won't Sony's own CD-R.
Raising my rating to 8 out of 10 now that I can use inexpensive CD-R with this player, and now that I've figured out the relatively few UI quirks. |

DVD+RW burned on HP100i using HP media works fine. Used HP's bundled MyDVD to make the DVD and Sony 860 read without problems.
I can't get any CD-R's to work so far. But cheap old Memorex 4X CD-RW I had laying around worked fine for both audio CD and VCD burned from Nero.
By adding CD-Text in Nero when burning CD-RWs, the Sony's "Disk Explorer" picked up the title without having to type it in. Added plus is that CD-Text will show in the separate Artist area, whereas if typing (via remote or keyboard) directly into the changer, you can only type into the Title field.
For labeling other disks in the changer, a PS2-compatible keyboard is the way to go. Contrary to some reports, you can fully navigate the Disk Explorer without the remote, by the arrow keys, enter key, and escape key. |

Problem with CD-R media - I've tested over 30 types - works ONLY with media PRINCO (Silver/Blue .. ATIP 97m 27s 28f - from CDRId) . Tested repeatedly - CD-DA, VCD, VCD with photo-albums, VCD with music-albums - OK on this type of CD-R!!. SW used - Nero, WinOnCD, Clone-CD ... do not depend.
Works with ANY (Tested approx. 10 types) CD-RW. |

Since I have a video/audio recorder, I must use the digital audio media in the Terapin. For this reason, I haven't tested regular CDR or CDRW.
I've tested the following digital audio media.
Terapin Audio CD-R's - DO NOT WORK
STI AUDIO CD-R'S - DO NOT WORK
MY CONCLUSION IS NO AUDIO CD-R'S WILL WORK. YOU CAN TRY OTHER BRANDS BUT YOU'LL FIND THEY WON'T WORK RELIABLY.
TERAPIN Audio CD-RW's - WORK
STI Audio CD-rw's - WORK
Any brand will play in this dvd player. The disc won't automatically start in the player, just hit play. It also won't allow to skip tracks. You can create manual bookmarks to get around this if you must have a means of getting to a scene quickly.
I haven't tested regular CDR or CDRW.
I have researched this player on the net and found specifications indicating it will play all types of CDRW. (for computer media OR for home audio recorders).
The problem with burning them on computer is the quality of the burning program and quality of the regular CDRW's. If your burning them on computer get the CDRW discs that are highly reflective. STI CDRW's with "enhanced reflectivity" ARE YOUR BEST BET. You can get these at circuit city.

CD-R That Don't Work: Imation, Memorex.
CD-RW That Work: STI (Digital Media), most every I have tried.
I have had issues with identical media working/not working depending on the burning program and burner used. I used Nero 5.0 with a Hewlett Packard 4/8/32x burner succesfully for a while, but now it doesn't work!
This player is good for storing lots of DVD's and store bought CD's, but takes too much time to get burned CD's working. |

Seems like a good player but plagued with irritations. It automatically starts playing the first disc when turned on, it is very difficult to jump to a disk without using the on screen interface, etc
I have had limited success with cdr's. Based on the advice for other Sony players listed here I bought a ten pack of Prime Peripherals x12 cdr's from OfficeMax. They Worked!
However, When I went back and bought 200, the new discs failed. The 200 cd pack contained x16 cdr's which appear to be less reflective than the x12's |

I really like this player for what it is - a DVD jukebox. It holds 300 DVDs/VCDs and audio CDs and has an "Easy play" slot for rentals. I tried it with DVD-R and DVD-RW dvds that I created and they played without a hitch.
I haven't tried any VCDs yet, but with the ability to play DVD-RW I probably won't. |

| This is a great player, and for everyone out there wanting one, I found some dirt cheap cd-r's that play on it! STI brand at circuit city will play on this player. It has to do with the reflectivity of the cd-r. I just picked up a 200 pack for $9.99 after rebate. A nickel a cd! Now I can finally put my Seinfeld and Friends backup vcd sets in here! |
