Okay, I've owned this unit for close to 2 years now and purchased it in early 2001 for $140.

It plays all the SVCDs I burn using DVD2SVCD perfectly, even with 48khz audio. It plays Data CDs with MP3s, but the blue screen and crappy file browser need SERIOUS work.

So, what's my beef ? SKIPPING AND COMPLETE FREEZING!

Area450 did a copmlete article on this problem (http://www.area450.com/thesampozone/articles/dv740xreport.htm) and it basically boils down to a crappy Laser Servo that gets LOST on the disc! I'm not sure if anyone out there has been having the same problems as me, but I'd seriously like some feedback on this situation.

I'm replacing the unit this month and before I trash it, want to root out this problem.

Bought this DVD player a after reading information on this page and area450.

When I first played a DVD I had colour fading lighter and darker (I guessed it was to do with macrovision or a faulty player).

The setup I have is to have the DVD player connected through my scart on my video as my TV has not got scart connection.

I Checked all details with this site and area450 and decided to take the chance and upgrade the firmware. Double checking all details and firmware information on area450, my player is now vcr friendly and the colour problem is now fixed.

Thanks to everyone who has added their review (without them I would still be struggling with a 10 year old vcr).

I have been using an ALBA DVD 103 DVD Player for the past year and a half (this was my first DVD Player). It played almost everything I threw at it including VCDs and SVCDs I burnt using NERO etc. Also played DVD-Rs quite well also and MP3s.

However, I have now been porting all my home videos onto DVD+R and DVD+RW which my Alba 103 can't handle so well. It can read the more expensive DVD+R media i.e. HP branded but not the cheaper INTENSO or DATAWRITE branded DVD+R. All these have been authored using the latest version of NERO and ULEAD DVD Moviefactory/Workshop.

So I decided to upgrade my DVD Player and went intially for the ALBA DVD 114 from ARGOS for £69.99. I ordered the ALBA DVD 108 from the catalogue but received the 114.

As stated above I could not get the Alba to play or my DVD+R and DVD+RW discs, even the HP branded DVD+R that worked fine on my ALBA 103. The unit did however recognise and play the VCDs and SVCDs quite well. After playing around with it for a while I got fed up and took the unit back to Argos and changed it for the £84.99 BUSH DVD 2023.

The BUSH DVD 2023 played all my DVD+R and DVD+RW discs okay, but I could not get it to recognise or play any of my VCDs or SVCDs at ALL! So I got fed up and took it back.

After browsing the web I found many recommedations for the SHARP DV-740H (a Sampo clone) from Argos for £129.99. I also found a brilliant website (in addition to VCDHELP.COM) named AREA450 (http://www.area450.com/). After much thought I decided to try my luck once more.

On visiting 5 of my local Argos Stores in Central and South East London, I was initially offered a substitute model SV1 which is totally different to the Sharp DV740. After visiting more stores I finally found 1 remaining Sharp DV740H unit at Argos in Holloway (London).

I have just tried out all my various discs:

VCDs and SVCDs
(purchased and authored using Nero)

DVD+R and DVD+RW
(Intenso, Infiniti, Datawrite, HP: self authored using NERO, and also recorded using the Philips DVDR880)

DVD-R (purchased only NOT authored)

EVRYTHINGS plays!!!

I am very happy. It was the best £129.99 I spent. I now look forward to playing around with my new machine over the next few weeks...

This is a versatile player and virtually the only Sharp model that is true of. Not surprisingly this was, I believe, originally a Sampo designed player. Works great with Nero 5.5.8.2 and plays everything I've put in it. As said, for the price... The only drawback is for those with older T.V.s unable to process a NTSC/Pal multi signal and, in order to play Pal discs, must switch to a Pal only signal. The difficulty is, Sharp "improved" Sampo's design by covering the NTSC/Pal/multi button on the remote control. A small incision directly to the left of the "setup" button and a pointy tool should fix the rolling screen.

Bought the Sharp DV-740H from argos for 199 Euro
a few hours ago. I bought this model after reading that
the DV-740 also supported Kodak Photo CD/.jpg on this
site. Hoewever reading the manual is says NOT to put
Photo CD's into the machine. Tried anywyaty and it
wont read any photo disc I have.

Nothing in the Manual about Kodak Picture CD/JPG Images
as this was the reason I bought the Sharp instead of a cheaper model.

This machine does everything I want. I can watch whole movies on VBR 352x288 XSVCDs with 2 audio tracks and 4 SVCD subtitle tracks. However films greater than 99mins are no longer searchable and even longer ones cannont be authored with VCDEasy.

Tried two of these players. Both suffer the same problem of a slight stutter every 3 seconds when playing a DVD-R from cold. The same on two different DVDs and two players. If I stop and start the play it still continues to stutter. If I power off and on again it usually clears itself and plays fine.
This ones going back to the shop as well.
Anyone else had that problem?
Apart from that it is ok, but no optical output, digital coax output used instead.

Tried various media no prob's, a friend just bought a NAD DVD Player (cost him 5 or 6 times as much)and is totally sick cos it won't play SVCD,VCD or mp3,
Oh Dear.this machine plays anything I put into it although it does seem to freeze or falter slightly on multi layer DVD's. I use Nero burning 5.1, for burning mp3,vcd,Svcd and audio all play without a hitch. I consider this excellent value for money...I am not technically minded when it comes to things like this I just know it plays anything I put in it.

This Dvd Player , Plays Everything That I put into it ,
I recently purchased a Pioneer Dvr-a04 , and I haven't found anything That I couldn't play , The picture quality is absolutley awsome. The sound seems quiet at times, but I only spent 120 , on it and It plays perfectly , used nero to burn svcd's; vcd; Dvd-r ; Dvd-rw; mp3's ;wma's;and images . It's sumwhat picky on cheap cd-r's , but if you dish out a little extra for the better quality , should present no problems . testing , further to see how far I can push it , will update later.

Thank You ,
Electronic Calibration Technition.

Bought in Singapore. Use HP media, and make VCD/SVCD/miniDVD using Ulead software. This one plays everything I have made on CD-R and CD-RW. Some negatives: occasionally it seems to freeze when loading miniDVD disk, so power-down; panning scenes look jerky with some of the VCD and DVD including original disks!; miniDVD should be > 4000kbps otherwise you see artifacts when panning and fading, I use 6000+kbps and that looks great; visual quality is not as good as my Pioneer DVD player, and also it's a bit cheaply made. Anyhow it's the only player I could find that plays miniDVD.

Had the Apex-1500 and couldn't get it to properly play miniDVD (went to MP3 file mode then could play as a file...). Went back to Fry's to test out some other players and tried this on a lark. To my suprise played my miniDVD's, including the menus (with smooth FF and slow)!! Supported both CD-RW (old HP disc...rewritten on SEVERAL times) and CD-R (Verbatim, GQ,) and played every other format I tried ((x)(s)VCD), even Mpeg 2 not encoded properly and burned as an XSVCD with nero played without a hitch! On the downside the time is not displayed on miniDVD playback, but that is really a trivial point. The quality of the machine is leaps and bounds above the APEX-1500 and looks a thousand times better, with a slicker remote. Go buy now!

I have found not too many problems with this DVD player. I would agree with some other reviews that it does not show the mp3s the way you would except it, but it's a pretty good price for a DVD player that plays MP3 discs.

A lot of people bitch about how discs freeze up on them in their players. I have had that problem with some discs in this player, but I have also had the same problem of freezing in other players (Panasonic, Sony, and Apex) with the same discs. Some discs are just bad and the studios who make them should be slapped.

Tried this player in Circuit City with a couple of demo disks I'd created...

It played my MP3s that I'd burned onto a Memorex CD-RW (700MB 4x CD-RW) with no hitch (only displays the first 7 or 8 characters using all CAPS to display).

It played my DVD-R that I'd created with iDVD 2 on my Mac (using the internal Pioneer DVR-A03 "Superdrive" DVD burner which, FWIW, I added to a dual-processor 450MHz G4 that originally just had a DVD-ROM drive). The images looked gorgeous, no problems whatsoever with the DVD-R (media: Pioneer DVD-R 4.7GB, catalog #: DVS-R470SDF). Humorously, the pimply-faced clerk who came to assist me as I slid the DVD-R in the tray told me that a Pioneer DVD-R would not play in the Sharp DV740U...the echo of his voice hadn't quite faded when the DVD-R began playing perfectly...shows what the Circuit City guys know.

Haven't tried a plain CD-R, DVD-RW, or VCD yet, but for DVD-R and MP3 the thing works great...just wished it (like so many) would display more of the filename of the MP3s...
