No problems with any AudioCD, CD-R up to 870MB(VCD, SVCD, MP3), CD-RW 650MB, DVD, DVD-R(Fuji, Maxell, TDK) DVD+R(Maxell, TDK) so far. Does not play CD-RW 700MB(Fuji), DVD-RW(TDK), DVD+RW(TDK).

N/A 7 of 10 MP3 long filename Comments: Broght the 838 E2 model and discover that it dosn't playback selfburn DVD+R disc. DVD+RW work fine, but not DVD+R (don't know why, anyone??? Maybe new firmware or so???). Anyway.... I have head that it dosn't work with DVD-RW too, but hasn't try it. DVD-R should work. Anyone else with experience with the E2 model ?? The discs it plays, it play very well. Not jerking what so ever. Fine quality and so on. Former I had the 838 (old model) and it worked fine with both DVD+R and DVD+RW.

Good player for many formats but due to the ess chipsets worse picture quality (farbpumpen). I tried to play jpg files from an iso or udf format disc but it doesnt`t work. Know i bought a dik 270 witch has much better picture quality.

Tested different brands of DVD Media, e.g. Philips, Verbatim, SK(Marktkauf) All those media perfect play on other DVD Players.

When I was about to buy a DVD-Writer a few weeks ago I couldn't find precise information, what Media is supported by my Scott 838. So I bought the NEC ND-1300A DVD-Writer which supports both +R(W) and -R(W). For now I tested several DVD-R/+R brands (TDK, Verbatim, Imation) and -RW/+RW media from TDK. Result: all self-burned DVDs worked. With the demo-version of DVD-Lab (http://www.mediachance.com/dvdlab/) I authored successfully a DVD with non-standard MPEG2-Files. In fact these MPEGs are SVCD-Files (PAL 480*576). The only thing to care about is that the audio had to be converted from 44.1 kHz to 48kHz, otherwise the DVD does not work. With audio converted, the DVD works without any problems in the Scott. Please have in mind, that there are so many completely different versions of the Scott 838. Just again: I own the SDVD001A!

Der Verkäufer (Weinert)legte erst meine mitgebrachten und selbsgebrannten DVD`s ein, um zu testen, ob der Scott-Player sie lesen kann. Es funktionierte. CD-R, DVD-R, DVD-RW, MP3, VCD und SVCD funktionieren sehr gut. (Gebrannt mit dem DVD-Brenner Pioneer A05) Nach dem positiven Test kaufte ich den Player. Auch erkennt er Unterordner auf der DVD. Eigentlich spielt der player alles ab und ich bin ziemlich zu frienden.... Das einzige was mich stört ist nur, dass er keine 2 Audio spuren bei SVCD's hinbekommt...... Wenn es dafür ma eine Firmware gäbe, würde ich mich freuen. Falls ihr einen billigen player sucht, dann lohnt es sich auf jedenfall den scott zu holen.... English: Sorry but my english is not very well! I bought this player for 99 euro at Saturn (HiFi-Market) and got 3 movies with it! The Scott 838 is a very nice but it has a little handicap.... it do not play 2 Audio-streams form SVCD's... :'( If u need a cheap player buy this one. sorry for my english I'm a german man ;)

I have a Scott DVD (SDVD 006A)which looks completly different compared to the SDVD 001A or 001S. The 838 (006A) was sold in Germany at Saturn fo 99 EUR (including 3 DVDs !). The remote control included was made for the Scott 837. Therefore the Player is black, but the RC is grey. But who cares if the player is that cheap. The player plays VCD perfectly. Even if they have a higher non-standard bitrate (1246 instead of 1100). time count and fast forward works fine (yes! some do not). Even though I bought a european PAL-Player, it plays US NTSC DVD-R very fine. The drive makes absolutely no noise. MP3 files play finte too (random play can be choosen). But only the first 11 letters fit into the display - bad thing if you have many songs of the same musician. Fast forward goes up to 16x. Picture quality is better then expected. The add said "Region free", the manual sais RC2, so does the backside of the player - haven't checked yet. All in all a good cheap player.

CVD? $100 N/A 9 of 10 MP3 long filename MP3 ID3 TAG Comments: I bought it six month ago. In my view a great player. I burned DVD-R and -RW with Pioneer A04 and it works both perfect. Tested with Princo and Verbatim Media. Programs for recording were Pinnacle Studio 8 and Nero. But be careful: Not all Versions of this player will play DVD-R. I asked Scott itself and they told me before I bought my A04, that DVD-R's are not supported. Now I know that there are different Versions of this player. So maybe you have luck or not. There is no guarantee.

Burned Sony 80min cd with mpeg1/mpeg2 ISO (CBR/VBR) and MP3 (CBR only) files and it played both w/o troubles. No problems with vcd/svcd except forward and rewind isn't working correctly. Tried DVD-R (Datasafe Media) didn't work. Just hangs after menu when the film starts. Support folders but no long file names.

It's been selling recently for Aud $189 in discount shops like Go-Lo and Crazy Prices. The unit has macrovision disabled and is region free out of the box with no hacks required. So far I've tested it with MP3's and JPG's and it works great. Inside it has a fairly crude power supply but appears to use and IDE DVD drive like the Apex. The 'motherboard' also has a daughterboard that accomodates the Karaoke function. Overall it's great!

CVD? $100 N/A 9 of 10 miniDVD/cDVD Comments: Cool and extremely cheap player with lots of features! Plays my CDR / CDRW as VCD/SVCD without problems. Mp3 CDs as well... Nevertheless it has only a 4x CD read laser, so the maximum kbit/sec for (s)vcd is about 2500 (+ 1xx kbit sound). And im not sure yet whether he can play Minidvds or not! My UDF burned CD with Dvd mastered Vobs on it didnt work, so i guess he cant... And he doesnt accept my CVD's... Well perhaps I just burned them wrong... ^^

I can play my mp3/vcd/svcd discs without any problems. even uncompressed avi files and abnormal vcd/svcd discs (i.e. 90min film on one vcd) can be played. I bought a DVD+RW drive and my DVD also works an this magnificent machine! Many probably tried to playback a DVD+RW without success, but what do you know. IT WORKS! The only problem I have, is that sometimes it freezes when its screensaver is running. Its not bad because turning it off and on again, the movie continues from the point of interruption.

CVD? $100 N/A 8 of 10 JPG/JPEG MP3 long filename MP3 ID3 TAG Comments: Great Drive! It has been awfully cheap and fits my needs. I've read lots about bugs on the 838 but cannot come along with them. Bugs: Sometimes I've just b/w screen during the setup. Multisession MP3 CDs are somtimes stopped while playying for a few seconds and then continue. The bitrate ist fascinating 512kB - No Prob! The sound qualitiy for Audio CDs is quite poor, but ok. The optical output is nonsense. For it sometimes seems to have probs with the Bit-Rate. DVD: It even plays Japanese Code, but without subtitels. May reliy on the DVD. All in all: Quite good drive in relation to the price. Bought it in Germany (Vobis 09_01). For mp3 codex I use the original FHCD.

CVD? $200 N/A 7 of 10 Comments: Bought this in Germany. Works wonderfully with Both Region Code 1 and 2 (don't have anything in the other codes). It plays my self-burned Music CD's so basically does what I bought it to do. The only thing I wish it would do is remember the last volume setting when playing a DVD movie. It starts out at about 11 and you must manually turn the player up to 16 (Max). Can be done from the Remote so no big deal but it would be nice. Overall I am happy with the machine as it does what it promised me at a very reasonable cost.
