CVD? $? over 1 year 8 of 10 DVD-RAM Comments: Won't record to CDs, but reads them fine. I've only used Sony -RW, Fuji -R and Verbatim +R(W). - For those having issues finalising, just record an extra 5 min. then try finalising again. - For recorders that won't read their old discs, you need to clean the laser. Major problem is with cleaning the second lens under the top focus lens. There's little space to get in there. - Editing is easy on the PC with TDA, when your discs are formatted DVD-V. If you formatted DVD-VR, you need to use a reader that supports DVD-RAM and you can edit with NVE.

CVD? $? over 1 year 1 of 10 DVD-RAM Comments: When it worked I loved it because I could record close to 8 hours of vcr on one DVD+R. But now I ended up having the same problem as everyone else. It doesn't play or finalize the dvd's. Did anyone ever fine Firmware or a fix for it? Does any of the other type Dvd Recorders with VCR combo record up to or close to 8 hrs?

CVD? $? over 1 year 1 of 10 DVD-MP3 Comments: This unit is a lemon. Bad engineering and poor performance. I have spent more than a year transferring my VHS's to DVD using this combo unit. From the very beginning this unit would seem to randomly reject DVDs I tried to insert, either fresh DVDs or DVDs I had already recorded on with this unit; the DVD brand does not seem to matter. I have used DVD+R and DVD-R. Lately the problem has gotten even worse. The unit rejects DVDs that IT has recorded. Sometimes it will accept the DVD after ejecting and reinserting, sometimes I have to do this half a dozen times, other times it will accept the DVD the NEXT day. Now it also has trouble finalizing DVDs that have just been freshly recorded, hosing the entire DVD. To date I have recorded about 500 DVDs, with half of them not yet finalized as I was planning to add more material to these DVDs to fill them up. Now I'm afraid that these are unusable - they cannot be read by the DVD drives in the 3 PCs I have access to, and the unit will most likely not be able to finalize them. The engineering of this unit irks me too. There is no fail safe mechanism to record onto VCR or DVD, as other units have, such as pressing a double key or requiring acknowledgement of the record command. Nor is this unit required to be turned off in order to timer record. I have erased several of my VHS's with this unit without realizing it at the time. One way of doing this is to have a VHS tape inserted, then go to the timer record menu to make an entry; if you mistakenly hit ENTER with the current time displayed while trying to make the timer recored entries, the unit will start recording immediately! This Samsung DVD-VHS combo recorder is a piece of crap and I will never purchase a Samsung product again.

CVD? $200 over 1 year 2 of 10 Comments: When I first owned this unit, it wouldn't work right at all. It wouldn't accept half the discs I tried... both to record on and just to play. It would occasionally accept a DVD+R disc, but it would often still have trouble writing to and finalizing. It would also have a whole bundle of problems if the power would blink, even a minor power surge would reset the unit and usually it would no longer accept the disc that was in the unit at the time. This resulted in a lot of lost data. I wouldn't be able to finalize the disc and therefore couldn't play the disc in any other player, not even in my PC. I tried many different DVD brands and in all different formats, -R +R -RW +RW etc. Finally I went out on a limb and I purchased a DVD/CD player cleaning disc and ran the cleaning cycle... next thing I know it accepted a disc. It was a Sony DVD-R 1x-16x speed. After this, for a few months anyway, it was working pretty well, with only a few minor glitches here and there. Then one day recently I had to move the unit, just across the room. I unplug it and move it, plug it back in and now it's just like it was the day I got it. It won't accept any disc now, not even the majority of professional DVD movies that I try. It especially seems to have trouble with these Dual Layer double sided DVD movies. So now I am about to call the unit broken and give up, as cleaning hasn't helped. I have tried taking it apart and nothing is visibly wrong inside it. I have always thought there may be some balance issue with the laser... but I'm not sure. I also can't say if this is something that happens often with this unit or if I'm just extremely unlucky. I can't recommend this unit though, based on my personal experience. It's a shame because during that very short period of time when it worked pretty well, it was actually useful. But all in all I try to warn people what might happen and it's caused me so much aggravation, it was a much regretted purchase. I hope this helps you in your decision of what DVD recorder not to go with.

CVD? $200 14 days 4 of 10 Comments: Super slow laggy UI. & Can't edit the DVD's it makes on the computer. Firewire transfer from DV is very easy. Can't edit with any normal video editing program I have. Seems to do a good job of copying directly from VHS to DVD+R -BUT- it will look terrible unless you use the highest quality speed setting (They call it "XP" speed) to record the DVD (~1HR 12Min on Single layer DVD+R). Putting titles on the DVD will take at least 5 to 10 mins (I'm serious) due to the super slow response of the interface. Press a button and you can count 1-1-thousand before the cursor moves! Then you have to manually finalize the disc another 2 mins -Not bad I guess. Many firmware glitches such as: when naming a disc if you hit Delete (FFW button on remote) it won't delete, instead it will start fast forwarding the tape & won't let you do anything until it has finished Fast-forwarding THEN rewinding the tape!! This is a long time to be locked up. Oh yeah, then it dumps you out of the naming menu and you loose whatever you were typing. I'll be returning it for the Panasonic version that I have heard is very good.
