Iv been trying to get a friends machine to SEE MP3 formats.
It wont read DATA DVD disks, AT ALL..
CD's it see's, but NOT the MP3's..
I place them in the root and in DIR, and it see's the DIR, but NOT anything thats MP3.
after reading the ABOVE comments, I THINK I see a problem. I get a funny feeling that this machine has Diff, hardware/firmware in Many machines. Its NOT consistamt errors witht he SAME problems. |

No bones about it--buying this player was a mistake. I used to have a "generic" Initial DVD-2540 which I had bought 3 years ago and it worked much better than this unit did.
I don't know why others have been able to play DVD+R discs in this player. Mine rejects them outright. It will play Imation and, strangely enough, "generic" (Value-Disc) Office-Max DVD+R discs just fine. But it rejected Memorex 4x, Memorex 8, TDK, Philips--established names in the field. I sure don't know how it can play Office-Max discs (and Imation) but reject Memorex, TDK, and Philips. (I use DVD Decryptor, DVD Shrink, and Ahead Nero express.)
A call to the Samsung CSR confirmed--officially, this player does not support DVD+R media at all, and no firmware upgrade exists. It does support DVD-R, but my DVD burner is an early 2004 TDK that only burns to DVD+R media, plus I have like 30+ Memorex DVD+R discs, I'm not going through the hassle of satisfying this picky player, especially when a 3-year old "generic" DVD player (the Initial DVD-2540) handled all those discs 100% perfectly (as does the Cyberhome 300 I just got).
Also, I hate 2 other things. One--fast scan. One poster reported that it doesn't have it. Well it does--but they combined it with the chapter-skip buttons. You have to HOLD DOWN the button to activate fast-scan--THEN, since it starts out at a slow 2x, you have to hold it down AGAIN to jump up to 8x, then hold it down AGAIN to go to 32x--get the point? So many times you mean to fast-scan and end up skipping instead and losing your place. It's wearing my poor thumb out. How annoying! (Granted, it does offer like 128x fast scan, but at what cost convenience to activate it?)
Also annoying--I couldn't find anywhere where the display would show how long the DVD was. What, am I supposed to skip to the end and write the time down? Good grief, again my cheap Initial showed time remaining. More, most DVD settings require you to completely stop the player to set them up. My Initial DVD-2540 was way better at doing those things "on the fly." This unit also is SLOOOW at showing JPEGs, again the Initial DVD-2540 was faster.
Lastly, it was neat how when using the built-in tuner it showed the title of the show that was on (and the VCR functions just fine, I have to say). But then when I wanted a "clean" screen I had to press "display" like 4 freaking times.
To be fair, I did buy this unit second-hand and didn't eat much of a loss trying it out(paid 50 for it, turned around and sold it for 40). But frankly I'm glad I got rid of it. It really disappointed me that a "generic" DVD player--a 3-year old one, mind you--ran figure 8s around this thing in every manner. The lack of DVD+R was especially appalling--and for crying out loud, Samsung, DO NOT EVER combine the fast-scan and chapter-skip functions into the same buttons EVER again!

I replaced a fairly new Sony SLV350P with this because the Sony would not play the second layer of dual layer dics which were burned on a Sony DRU720A burner. The Samsung V4600 play these discs beautifully but will not play VCD. Some people report it plays SVCD, but I could not get it to play mine.
The player has very limited remote functions and takes some playing with to figure everything out. The FF takes you to the next chapter, but does not scan through the program at fast speed. I find this a bad feature. |

Purchased at CircuitCity. Apparently, it's a discounted price (from $120). No rebate nonsense.
Obviously, after only one day of use, a real "rating" can't be provided but an "8" is a good start based upon what is does play (speaking of discs only at this point - VHS output not relevant).
VCDs absolutely will not play; the unit pops up an advisory. Tried three VCDs burned on various equipment/OS's.
SVCDs play just fine although RW/FF is non-functional (pause/play/stop are okay). The original mpeg-2 files were authored and burned on both Mac and PC. No apparent issues in playback. Very clean video.
One very nice feature: The unit provides for 4:3 pan & scan, 4:3 letterbox, and 16:9. I do have a poorly ripped SVCD that, in an older player was meant to be 16:9 but only played in 4:3 (with the resultant horizontal "squish"). This Samsung let me choose the display mode (not on the fly; had to stop the playback first) and did play the SVCD just fine.
Did not see/hear any sync problems with SVCDs.
Stereo separation on DVDs & SVCDs excellent.
VHS part of the unit allegedly will play S-VHS tapes (someone may care).
VHS may be set to automatically change the speed of the tape recording if you set up a timed recording that will exceed the SP time available. Tell the unit whether you are using T-120, -160, or -180 tapes. Frankly, the SLP recording quality sucks but that's true of any VHS at that speed.
I should note that the TV tuner works very well; actually better than the tuner in my Toshiba TV. Marginal channels (on analog cable, no less!) seem to lock in with less drift and interference from other channels. (125-channel tuner)
Remote control not too small or large; actually readable without my glasses. Can control virtually everything from the remote using the on-screen menu.
Cute: Unit's LCD display reads "HI" when you turn it on and "BYE" when you turn it off.
Oh, before I forget: The unit lets you record to VHS from any external source not copy-protected (as you would expect) but, at the same time, will let you watch a DVD/SVCD in its player. Would make sense that one of those de-macrovision devices connected in a loop from the output to the input of this device would let you transfer DVDs to VHS (if you had such a need).
I would have preferred a black unit instead of the silver but, at $100, how can I really complain?
As I get more experience with the unit, I'll post more comments. |

Only thing it lacks is a firmware to kill macrovision. |

| Not a bad machine for the price. I was surprised that it didn't play VCD's, but I checked a second machine, tried different media. Still wouldn't play. |
