Comments:
VCDs are iffy. Some will play fine, others won't load at all. SVCDs tend to play alright and it chokes on most XVCD/XSVCD discs. I've gotten Ram discs to play but it involves ruining the RAM disc (in regard to reuse) by forcefully "spintracking". Waist of money for a $4 RAM disc especially when you can only get a proper spintrack disc about 10% of the time.
MP3 bitrates listed are the highest I got to work. It may support higher, but this player is ancient in tech terms. Plays WMA on CD, but not DVD. Will NOT play CBR WMA files, only VBR.

Bottom line: this player is a tank. It's not the best quality output, it's not the most flexible, and it's not even all that nice to look at by today's standards. However, you will be hard pressed to kill it. I've had two from the start, and one I bought last year when a local "old timer" dealer when out of business. All three show the exact same benefits and quirks. One has been in a household/shop area with multiple heavy smokers; dropped, crushed under a 38" tube TV when a stand collapsed, is missing the drive door, has a cracked tray, and has been abused beyond anything most people could do. It works just as well as the one I bought last year that was still truly factory sealed.

Great for: Auto shop, store shop, anywhere where your player will be abused. Looks wonderful on older TVs, but the picture is poor on HDTVs and larger LCDs. Great for smokers OR in a room for young children. They can drop and spill on it all day and it will keep on truckin', given time to dry out. It hardly notices ash, dust and dirt on it's innards as long as the lens and discs are clean.
Not good for: Primary player in today's modern home.

You can pick one up factory sealed for as little as $20 now if you try the back street dealers (the old Zenith store, per say).

Works fine so far, I just got my first DVD burner and DVD+R is fine. I use Nero 6 with both bitsetting set to DVD-ROM and Automatic.

I have done several VCD and SVCD with it and had no problems. I tried a photo CD of some type with onDVD but the timing was off, the music was played too fast and the slide show timing was off.

I will update DVD+RW and DVD+R DL once I get some and try them out.

Used it over 3 years, almost exclusively for DVDs (and VHS too.)

- Audio CDs sound very bad, but DVD sound is OK.
- DVD-R: checked with one type of media, works great
- Could not make it play DVD+RW, even with bitsetting
- Sometimes plays MP#, sometimes don't. Have no time
to understand what's there, may be subdirectories.
- could not make it zone-free
- no firmware upgrade

Comments:
I've been using this unit about 2 years ago:

. VCD looks very good (using DVDDecrypter or SmartRipper, TMPegEnc & Nero). Do not use any automatic program for creating VCD, is just a dream not true.
. MP3 sounds ok
. CD Audio ok
. VCR very good
. The remote is very slow and must be well directed to the unit but works fine (except for the VCD forward - it's a nightmare)
. The configuration for the multiregion works very good (if you are not using video components connection ensure to use it as alternate video so you can see what is going on when configuring the unit - you can find the way to do this configuration in this site)
. DVD-R: who said this unit can play this media? Maybe can start playing but you only see skiping over and over.
. DVD+R: some times could be skiping but it plays fine. Try to use DVD-Shrink.
. DVD+RW: at the beginning it worked but later I have no idea why the unit becomes enemy of them. It doesn't work with that anymore.
. DVD-RAM, DivX, MPEGISO, etc: je je
. Original DVDs will play fine in this unit (most of it), NTSC only of course - even when in autoregion mode.
. The inputs and outputs are very good.
. Like someone post, "that unit becames the unit of my" sons, and I bought a E-TECH ETD-137 for about $67 USD. This unit is a warrior! It plays all that my SAMSUNG V-100 doesn't want to play and it does fine. Even plays JPG and WMA. It's not a combo but I've connected my old VHS Sony from my sons.

If I need to save a movie into VHS all I have to do is a little connection, but I don't want to do this anymore.

Sorry, but my comment is that the SAMSUNG V-1000 makes me never believe again in combos neither SAMSUNG about DVD players.

I hate this unit, even if it works ok, I get tired of many "I can't do it"s. The moments of relax converted in skiping time for all the movies that I try to see. Maybe the unit becames damaged or maybe this is the way the unit works.

Only time will tell?

Excuse me for posting this.

Bye.

Have had it for about 3 years without any real problems. Plays VCD,XVCD,SVCD & XSVCD without any problems, except you have to be careful to burn them at slightly slower rate to ensure good tracking. VCR works fine, never had it "eat" a tape or have any problems. Only really weird feature is that DVD's left in the machine seem to dominate over VCR, even if you don't want to watch the DVD.

This was a fantastic machine when it came out 3 years ago, and is still very good today. Great for crossover customers like me with sizable VCR library and wanting to increase DVD library.

When I first bought this in December 2002, I tested VCD with both CD-R and CD-R/W media, and it seemed to work fine. Some time after that, when I actually wanted to watch a VCD with it, all I could get were "No disc found" errors. Judging by the other reviews, all I can guess is that my unit degraded to the point where VCDs won't play. Seems to be fragile.

Plays VCD's and SVCD's fine, but fast forwarding and rewinding SUX, Apex's do it a lot better. If you press stop while playing an SVCD w/o chapters, the unit may loose the position and start from the beginning.

DVD has always worked fine. After 13 months the VCR eats every tape. This was hardly used as a VCR, less then 20 hours. Samsung was picky about being 1 month out of warranty and would do nothing. It costs as much to fix the VCR as it does to buy a new one. Poor quality control in my opinion as I noticed other posts here of the VCR eating tapes.

Note: This unit is identical to the GoVideo DVR4000 which I also have (does not eat tapes though).

vcr is beginning to make loud noise when rewinding. I have cleaned it and it does it periodically. It's not even two years old but I throw alot of kids movies threw it. I am worried it may go down, which makes this combo useless for the purpose. I am happy with the dvd player. It plays all my +r and +rw's I have thrown at it (usually no name brands.) I have found some of my friends' -r's not work on it, but some that do. I imagine if its a ritek or high brand -r it will work fine. I am getting some 4x -r Ritek's soon, I will post outcome or email me if your wondering the results.

This is an overall good piece of equipment. But I have had problems playing DVD-R format. I am using ACCU white label DVD-R, burned with a Pioneer A105. They have played in several other players but not in this Samsung. It seems to play everything else, I haven't tried DVD-RW, DVD+R/RW. But if you plan on playing DVD-R do not buy this machine.

Bought this at Best Buy for $185 for the sole purpose of watching and recording vcd, svcd. Great all in one unit. Plays DVD, MP3, VCD with no problems at all. Plays SVCD, but I get 'no disc found' errors half the time; just push eject twice and try again. It will play svcd, believe me. Xvcd and Xsvcd play but there is stuttering; i personally believe with a little tweaking you can get it to work.
Annoying feature: if a DVD is in the drive and you power on the unit it will automatically play the DVD.
Also: when the unit gets too hot (6 hours or so) it needs to power down or playback will skip or even freeze up.
Damn good investment.

I wanted a combo player to save space. Contrary to what Samsung says, it can record non copy protected DVD's to VHS and sometimes it plays DVD-R's.

I've burned DVD-R's in a Apple G4. They all play back fine in that computer, my son's iMac and my iBook but only the Apple branded DVD-R's with an orange logo played OK on this Samsung. Apple blue logo, Maxell and Sony's all skipped.

I just bought a Toshiba SC-V280 and all the DVD-R's play fine.

It played SVCDs and VCDs burned with Nero on any media (even the cheap CD-R you find on the net). Maybe the users reporting it doesn't weren't lucky or used funky burning options... but this one played about everything I threw in it.
Haven't been able to test DVD-R or DVD+R unfortunately.

Bought Samsung DVD-V1000 and attempted to play
a DVD-R that I had burned in a Pioneer DVR-7000.
Lots of problems. Almost wanted to return the
(Samsung) machine. Instead, gave it to my parents because it does play retned DVDs and VHS tapes fine :-)

Problems playing DVDs that I burned include:
* inability to play first few seconds on disk,
* disk error warning message,
* stops playing,
* artifacts,
* inability to handle "white flashes" (brief
bursts of white) well,
* picture breaks up & pixilates.

Occasionally it would play one of these DVD-R discs
for a few minutes, but then problems would start
to appear. My parents, howver, love the machine
'cause they aren't intending to play burned DVDs.

I used a Pioneer DVR-103 to create a DVD-RW on a Memorex Version 1.1 DVD-RW
disc and on a DVD-R advertised as being made by "Recordable Media Corporation". The
DVD-Rs came in an unmarked box, with no writing on the Discs, but embossed in tiny
letters around the inside it says, "Mastered by Eastman Kodak Co. DVD-R 2.0" I used
Veritas RecordNow DX to write the data. I used SmartRipper to extract the video for the
test recording.

The DVD-RW would only play on the Pioneer DVD-103, and on a Pioneer DVD-ROM,
the DVD117R. Three older DVD-ROMs, and the Panasonic A310, the Apex
AD-1500 and this Samsung didn't even see the disc.

The DVD-R's behavior was the same, except that it did play on the Apex AD-1500.

I bought this to replace the Samsung Stereo with three cd changer I was using for DVD's for purposes of playing VCD's and SVCD's. So far, this player has played everything I've thrown at it!! Bought it at Best Buy for around $180 on sale and I haven't regretted the decision. The fact that it also plays VHS and replaced my VCR as well is an extra-added bonus!! Would definitely buy this one again.

Most of my VCD's and SVCD's have been burned with Nero, some with VCDEasy and other burn programs and so far, all work great!!!

Only problem I've had so far is after a few hours of playing disks, it needs the power recycled or it will freeze up, but that's a minor annoyance and doesn't stop me from still enjoying the player!!!!

Great Machine-----plays SVCD flawlessly and XSVCD if you tweak them a little-----DVD moves look great and VHS is fine. Got mine at Best Buy after rebates it was $224

Used Ulead VideoStudio 6 to capture and render and MovieFactory to author.

Settings for SVCD at 480 x 480 ranged from CBR of 2300 with audio at 224 to 2048 CBR, again with audio at 224

The new Video Studio 6 supposedly uses a different MPEG encoder than Ligos and the new VS6 Make Movie template for SVCD used VBR set to 2300----seemed to also work great-----SVCD Quality was better than VHS with a little bit of blockiness (not really noticeable) in very bright outdoor scenes with a lot of movement----and XSVCD was superb with just a teeny tiny lttle bit of stutter which I think I can fix by playing around with the bit rate.

XSVCD was 704 x 480----2700 CBR with audio at 224-----Movie Factory doesn't tell you it can do XSVCD until you start the authoring process, then xsvcd pops right up. I get pretty good copys to VHS using the Samsung's copy to tape function.

One tip: when you first pop the video disk in, it will load and then some text pops up and says: SVCD 2.0-----Menu On Immediately push the menu button on your remote which will turn the menu off and the disk will play at the beginning. You can THEN hit the menu button and use your menus made in Movie Factory----background music worked as well in the menus. If you hit any other button first when you see the text "SVCD 2.0-----Menu On" you'll have problems.

Great "all in one" machine----highly recomended-----Now if we just had a Macrovision Hack!!!!

it played all the vcd's i threw at it ok, except one.
as far as mp3's, it seems to only want to play whats in the root directory, and if everything is in separate directories, it only wants to play whats in the first directory. used nero to burn the disks.

i also have the cdc-mp3 car deck from AIWA, and this plays the mp3's great in any directory.

dvd's play fine (i have a limited selection).
the tape transport is already having some problems as far as VHS goes, it ate one tape and it's only 3 weeks old.
