| My rating is coloured by the fact the player is not compatible with any TV DVD recorder that I can find (It will play the odd DVD- or DVD+ but with glitches and most will just grind to a blocky halt). It will, however, play most PC written DVD+ and DVD-. Samsung "customer services" offer no help other than to disinterestedly point out the product booklet which is sketchy on the issue of -/+ compatibility (saying it will depend on recording conditions). |

Only got a DVD Burner recently, So this has been the first time I've been able to test DVD-R/+R/-RW/+RW & so on.
First attempt was burning a 'Mr DVD' DVD+RW. This worked no problem. So I rushed out and got loads of them. None of the following disc worked (same type & make?) Having collected the original copy I tested it again. To my surprise this also didn't work (Wierd! It did B4!).
If anyone can explain this I would like to know.
DVD Burner : PikaOne Dual Drive x8
Software : Nero 6.03
Discs : Mr DVD DVD+RW (Doesn't Work)
: TDK DVD-RW (Doesn't Work)

Top budget machine.
Plays SVCD burned with Imation discs at 4x and 8x with no problem at all.
DVD-Rs Ritek Gen 04 dye work a treat burned at 2x, not tried DVD+Rs but confident it will play them.
An alround top machine that i have been pleased with the past 2 yrs.
Only thing annoying is the remote IR is not very strong, has to be quite close and looking directly at the player.
Deffo one i would recommend |

I have these problems with this player:
- Data CD-R with MP3's doesn't play
and keeps endlessly loading. Ejecting
the CD was only possible after several
times turning off and on the player.
- Sound and Picture get sometimes out of sync !!!
Pressing Stop and Start fixes this but is really
no fun ! |

So far I haven't got any problems with this player.
It works perfectly with all kind of DVD disks such as for example Princo, Verbatim, TDK, and others whose name I cant't remember at the moment.
It works very well with DVD-VCD and DVD-VCD with SVCD headers.
I could fit up to four movies into a single DVD, keeping a very high video quality.

I have found that this player won't play my dvd+rw disks unless I do the following:
Eject the disk tray and put dvd+rw disk in tray but don't close it.
Power player off (tray closes automatically)
power player on - Disk plays !!!
Don't ask why but it seems to work everytime when I follow this procedure.
I hope this will help someone. |

Bought this player in Carrefour Belgium for 89 euro. I was looking for a player who plays everything and this player dissapoints me. The svcd's that I tried didn't work when there weren't the right format, but standard svcd's worked well. I had this player for about a week and brought him back to get my money back.
As I mentioned the scvd worked but after four days while playing all the colors became very dark
My mp3 cd's worked well, but sometimes the track is just playing very weird, just like fastforwarding the music while listening, the only thing you can do is to start the track all over again.
No function for autoplaying the full mp3 cd when the tracks are in folders, you have to select the tracks manually.
It has blocked once while browsing through the menu, I had to plug it out and replug it to work again

| Great DVD Player, found Datasafe Silver CD-R's don't handle XVCDs correctly, not just on this player but on my PC as well, been using Imation CD-R's and they offer perfect XVCD playback, on the DVD front, the drive itself is pretty good, reading even the most dirty and downright scratched to hell rental DVDs, sound is strong despite being only Prologic onboard, however dialouge is never drowned out by other sound channels, the image is pin sharp, on DVDs and VCDs with tracking extreamly fast, player is quiet and offers auto shutdown features, all round well built bit of kit, recommend for those on a budget |

Pros :
It's cheap, it's reliable, it plays VCDs, SVCDs and MP3s, it plays DVDR/W media, but it won't play my Clerks Animated DVD - it pauses for a second or two at every chapter, and auto-selects any alternative angles (which shows animatics).
Anyone know why this is? This is the only DVD I have that it does this with, and it plays fine on my DVD-ROM and my Panasonic A160.
It also doesn't play some MP3s depending on how they are encoded - I would burn any I've downloaded from the internet to a CDRW to check.
If you're getting skips, pauses and blockiness from your VCD/SVCDs and they play fine elsewhere, try giving your lens a clean with one of those lens-cleaner CDs with the brushes on the underside of the CD. I used a quite expensive Scotch one, and it worked a treat.
Cheers! |

I bought this drive based on the recommendations on this site and for the most part I am very satisfied with same.
However, what I do have a very expensive problem with is that all the DVD+R movies that I had previously created using Nero with the UDF(1.02)/ISO formula would not play. They play on my PC DVD player and my friends DVD player also but refuse to load on my machine.
This is either down to bit rate settings that I do not really understand having only just found out about same 3 mins ago or alternatively what I think is the real cause. When writing using Nero the latter program has no specific directives where to put the menu screens et al on the disk - it puts them on generically/wherever fits. When I have used a specific DVD film program such as ULEAD I have had no problems playing at all because, I believe, the latter knows to put the menu bits at the start of the disk. When switching between one menu screen and another the timer is already switching, on my machine, between 0:00:06 and 0:00:07, say, showing that it is taking the info from the start of the disk as opposed to elsewhere. As a further clue to this copying the VIDEO_TS folder from a Nero created disk that will not play onto another via my hard drive and NEODVD producs a disk that will now function.
A second problem is that all my previously created disks were made with a 'Field B' based profile. Field B looks absolutely terrible in this machine with judders etc etc. Field A or Frame based looks fine.
As I say I am pleased with this player but it does mean I have to start over |

I'm really happy to own this dvd player.
I can read any dvd+ media (whatever the brand) and
any cd-r(w) medias.
It's also a great mp3 player. Even if you can only use one level directories there's no problem with cd or dvd (using the latest nero software 5.5.9.22)
No problem to show menu created by "Complete DVD" by drazzle
I really think it's a very good choice at a pretty good price (129€ in France -Boulanger- )
No pb to crack the region zone

After reading the positive reviews I bought mine
at a local store for approx. 150 EURs.
I am pretty disappointed.
It plays SVCDs (although CVD = Chinese Video Disc
is displayed) without any header trick, but the
CD-R and CR-RW support is VERY UNRELIABLE.
- Sometimes big squares appear on the screen
when playing SVCDs (due to errors in MPEG2 stream)
- Sometimes the MP3 playing stops, or you can
hear noises
- Sometimes not all MP3 folders are loaded
- Noises during playing Audio CD recorded to CD-R
(CD-DA on CD-R), or the player refuses the disc
The first three can be solved sometimes pressing the
stop button twice, and restarting the playing, or
ejecting and reloading the disc again.
Sometimes when playing SVCD material from CD-R the
machine locks up, and only swithing off can solve the
problem.
I tried Philips, TDK and No Name CD-Rs as well, with
recording speeds 1x - 48x. No Idea. Probably the problem is with the dual laser head, or simply my player is broken.
The MP3 menu is catastrophic. It took me an hour to
figure out that on the left I can see the track
currently beeing played, while on right I can choose
a track to play. 8 characters is simply not enough
to describe a track, especially if you would like to
fix the playing order with the first two character.

I bought this DVD-player at ElGiganten (a large electronics chain in Sweden) in March 2003 for 990 SEK (approx. 113,42 USD).
Since I already have two DVD-players in the same price range that are capable of playing most anything I feed them, I wanted to check how a budget, but brand name, DVD-player stood up in the competition.
The Euroline 6632 and Euroline 6652 that I have are much better players, can do so much more than the Samsung, and the 6632 costs exactly as much as the Samsung at SIBA (another electronics chain in Sweden)!
The same goes for the Denver-DVD141, which I have also tested.
For more info on these and other Euroline/United/Denver players, go to http://surf.to/euroline.
My main gripes are these:
The Samsung is slow, dead slow. From the time when the tray closes after I've inserted a disc, it takes almost ten seconds of watching the "loading" symbol before the disc starts playing.
It does not have a power on/off button, only a "standby/on" button, which means it can't be completely shut down. This is un-economical and also, feels unsafe for fire-reasons.
I have not been able to play XSVCDs in it. I encoded a file with TMPGEnc's SVCD preset and only unlocked the bitrate setting. Not even at 2800 kbps did the Samsung play the XSVCD. The other reviews suggests it is possible, perhaps Samsung had a different firmware in previous models, or in models sold outside Sweden, because the player I have does definitely *not* support bitrates of 2800 kbps.
It does not play mpeg-files on a regular data CD (Mode-1), nor can it display jpg-pictures.
It can not read more than eight subfolders.
It can not fast-forward or rewind Mp3-tracks - only skip to next or previous track.
It can not fast-forward on SVCD. When I press the Fast Forward or Rewind buttons, it appears to be slowly forwarding/rewinding, but once I press the "play" button, it starts playing from the point where I were when I wanted to forward/rewind.
Next and Previous works. The "Return" button does work (I have authored my SVCDs to go back to the menu when pressing that button).
It plays SVCD discs on insertion without me having to press the "1" button. I encode with TMPGEnc and author with VCDEasy. If start playing the SVCD, then press "Return" and go back to the menu, however, "Play" doesn't work, but pressing "1" does.
It handles Mp3 playback very well. The audio quality is good, also on VBR and ABR files. I tested bitrates up to 320 kbit on CBR, VBR and ABR, all sounded good.
Another good thing is that I can select whether to output NTSC or PAL-60 when playing NTSC DVDs. This setting has no effect on SVCD playback. When playing an NTSC SVCD, the Samsung tries its best to convert to PAL which makes the picture quality bad and the video plays choppy and jerky.
The user manual can be downloaded here:
http://www.samsung.se/_upload_2/EC_DOWNLOAD/0/000 ... 20(SE).pdf
(Swedish, but Danish, Finnish and Norwegian pdfs are also available from www.samsung.se)
I have tested Memorex, Verbatim, Kodak and SKC CD-RW and CD-R discs. The player also works with photoSVCDs made with Ulead DVD Picture Show.
The region hack posted by "zaffe" on this site worked.
I find this player slow and low on features, compared to the Euroline and Denver players available at SIBA for the same price.

Very nice player. I tried DVD, VCD, DVD-R, DVD-R/W, DVD+R/W, MP3 CD and of course audio CD and everything worked perfectly well without any adjustement.
The menu is very easy to use and the player is easy to configure for your needs (PCM or bitstream audio, 4/3 or 16/9 screen and so one).
For all these features, it's price of 149 euros in France (about 149 dolares) is very correct.
