CVD? $80 over 1 year 6 of 10 DivX Comments: Have had this player going on 3 years now. Will play most DVDs fine, but will skip if there are minor blemishes on the DVD. Has a problem playing HBO disks, will skip or stop playing all together. Also has a problem with layer changes, will skip or stop playing all together. I have recorded multiple DVD+RW disks and the player will skip or refuse to play some of the chapters. Took the same DVD and it played fine in other players. After much frustration lately, am replacing this player and giving to my in-laws.

CVD? $90 N/A 5 of 10 Comments: Too many compatibility issues for this unit. Only plays some vcds and svcds. Sometimes a vcd will work, sometimes it won't. Unit is very temperamental. Also same issues with burned DVDs. Works okay with DVD+R, doesn't like DVD-R at all.

CVD? $70 N/A 9 of 10 Comments: Correction for my previous post "Hnn reported February 18 2003". I meant component video output (not progressive scan) for my HDTV. I ran into another problem. I burned SCVD at 52X on a 40X rating CDR (did not pay attention) and the player had problem skipping. Reburned the CDR to 12X/24X and the Samsung handled them like a champ! It is a very good player for 70$.

The player plays the movies just fine. I backup with dvd2one & burn with Record Now. No problems. I give it an 9 beacuse it won't play PAL dvds on my NTSC TV & I don't like the remote...The most used buttons are not label & too small

CVD $70 N/A No rating Comments: I sold my Cyberhome DVD500 to a friend and bought this Samsung S221 from best buy for 72$ after 10% coupon last weekend. I played all formats that I have DVD, VCD, SVCD, XSCVD... very well. The remote controll could be better as stated below but not too bad. The improvement that I can see over the Cyberhome 500 is that the Samsung plays SCVD without any occasional jerking motion (even with the latest firmware update). Progressive scan also looks very good on my HDTV. Not bad for a 72$ system.

CVD? $80 N/A 8 of 10 Comments: Tried the Cyberhome CH-DVD402, took it back because it wouldn't play any of my DVD+Rs (my Apex 660 plays them great. Took a few DVD+Rs down to BestBuy to try the other players out. This Samsung played all perfectly, even auto starts my VCD/SVCDs that are on CDRs (my Apex didn't do this). As people have mentioned, the remote is useless, but the player is great, especially for the price :)

Compared to a few friends that have very expensive Sony models this machine is much more capable in terms of compatability and support. IQ is great for an i-scan player, and it looks very, very good on my 30" Samsung HDTV. Unfortunately, the remote is horrible, but luckily my TV remote will now also control the DVD player, so it now sits next to the player and I use the far superior TV remote. In terms of compatability, I have run VCD, SVCD, DVD+R/RW, and CD-R/RW disks. I have yet to have a problem with DVD+ media (except once - but that was my fault) burned on my HP 200i drive. I actually think it likes the DVD+RWs slightly better than a normal DVD+R disk.

N/A No rating Comments: This was my second Samsung player. The M301 played only a few DVD-Rs. I bought the S221 because they claimed it played DVD-Rs. type of DVD-Rs(Princo 2X) - Will play fine after I've converted a home movie that was an AVI to mpeg2. After going out and spending another $100.00 for DVDXCOPY - Im ready to call it quits!! I've backed up and burned (with a Pioneer A105) FELLOWSHIP LOTR onto 2 disks. After spending 100.00 for a new player 100.00 for the software-that works great! The Samsung will not play the BACKUP COPY same DVD-Rs that work with with my home movies This is just a pain in the a**!! The BACKUP works fine on the PCs DVD-Player. What gives? Anyone else have this problem? Media? Encode/Decode/Author/Burn---I'm waisting alot of $$ and time trying to figure this I'm returning the player - Oh - by the way this player will play SVCDs out of sync after the first 20min or so - the M301, 3 years old plays them fine. I've lost Sadsongs trust!!! Any helP?

CVD $90 N/A 8 of 10 miniDVD/cDVD JPG/JPEG MP3 long filename MP3 ID3 TAG Comments: I have a first gen RCA DVD player. It doesn't do much other than DVD. I played DVDs on my Samsung 27" Dynaflat TV with vertical compression (squeezes all the lines into 16:9 format). It's probably the best interlaced NTSC screen I've ever seen. I read up on the S221 and then saw the sale at Best Buy for $90US. So far, I've been more happy with it than disapointed; it plays DVD's beautifully, VCDs and SVCDs just as well. Lack of long filename support for mp3 and the loading time for most discs suck. I've been encoding most DVD material to XSVCD at 720x480, 2100kbps (more or less to fit just two discs). I've tried higher bitrate VCDs (1600kbps and higher) without success. I think the drive can't handle higher bitrates from CD. I burned a SVCD in Nero with a short VOB from a DVD (uncompliant with SVCD specs, though) and the drive couldn't keep up, but the quality was just like the DVD, atleast the sharpness was. All and all, it's a keeper.

CVD $125 N/A 9 of 10 miniDVD/cDVD Comments: This player recognizes pretty much everything you throw at it - VCD, SVCD, DVD, DVD-VCD, DVD-SVCD, etc. I've tried them all and it will play them, some better than others. Sometimes audio will drop out on SVCD and VCD's. A quick pause and resume usually fixes it. I've been converting my VHS video tapes to DVD and fitting multiple tapes on one DVD using 352x240 resolution MPEG-2 @ 2000kbs average VBR. The Samsung plays these DVD-R's just fine. No problem. Only complaint is that the drive is noisy. Other than that, this is one of the better players out there for the money. Much higher quality than APEX, etc.

CVD? $100 N/A 8 of 10 Comments: VCD's and SVCD's burned on cheap media work fine. Remote is a bit odd, with a strange menu system. Haven't tested MP3's. I used it with a regular stereo system, a basic VCR, and a cheap 27" TV to set up a poor man's home theatre. Works great in that role.

N/A 9 of 10 Comments: Excellent player for DVD, VCD, and SVCD. However, it will not work if you want to play higher bitrate XVCD's (player skips and stutters). XSVCD: Plays NTSC 352x240 (low res) VBR SVCD's with no problems at all. I did not try XSVCD's at higher than standard bitrates. A nice < $100 player that supports many different format discs. A great alternative to the bargain-basement Apex, etc. players if you're looking for a higher level of quality and don't need to play non-compliant high bitrate VCD/SVCD's.
