Pros:
Great playback features. Plays all types of media (DVD+-R, +-RW, DL, and RAM). Played every commercial DVD I tried. DIVX playback very acceptable assuming you have a good quality AVI file. Video upscaling looks great on my Samsung 42" DLP TV. Audio good but not great. Very flexible timed recording features. Very good quality recording from my Panasonic VCR in XP (1 hour) and SP (2 hour) modes. Acceptable quality recording from LP (2 hour) mode.
Cons:
Recording media is limited to DVD-R/DVD-RW. Video/Audio slightly out of sync through HDMI connection. HDMI supports only 2.1 audio. Low quality TV tuner. Poorly shielded or low quality tuner introduces a "buzzing" into all TV channels through my Cable system. Not good for recording broadcast television. After reading many reviews on other sights, I've concluded that it is a common problem with this device. Currently there is no fix from Samsung.
Overall, this device is an excellent PLAYER, a good recorder and incorporates many features that other recorders in its category do not include. DVD audio playback is adequate at 2.1 through the HDMI connection, but if you want full surround use the digital audio connections with component video. You will lose the players upscaling feature, but DVDs still look good. Most HD television include built-in upscaling anyway. As a recorder it does an excellent job of transferring VCR or pass-through video to DVD in XP and SP modes. Even the LP and EP modes are acceptable. Do not buy this device if you plan to record a lot of broadcast television through its built in tuner. You will be sorely disappointed once you hear the audio “buzz” defect.
Though I did not mention it, it does include a DV connection on the front of the device for connecting you DV camcorder directly, and includes on-screen control of the camera. Transfer was fairly easy with my Cannon video camera.
I have chosen to keep the recorder because of its many great feature and video quality. It would be another story if I did a lot of television recording. Hopefully Samsung will come up with a resolution for the “buzzing” bug.

Pros:
Nice upscaling results as seen on 50" DLP
Nice full frame playback of 4:3 video on widescreen TV
Nice recording quality
Cons:
TV tuner and SVideo inputs would blank out after unit was left on for extended periods of time.
Would not record to Sony DVD-R Media
Ocassionally required power reboot to play DVD-R's
I've had two of these units within 2 weeks prior to exchanging them for a Panasonic. Both units could not record to my Sony DVD-R's but worked well with TDK DVD-R's. Both units would turn the svideo and tuner inputs "off" after the unit was left on for several hours. The only way to restore the inputs was to power cycle the unit. The first unit would occasionally refues to play DVD±R's until the unit was power cycled. The second unit would not play any of my DVD±R's of various manufacturers and was the reason for switching to a Panasonic ES25S. |

A good DVD recorder/player for this price.
Purchased soley for the fact that this unit upconverts regular DVD to 720p/1080i and basic tv recording. So all the other features are just more "icing".
No Problems Reading DVD +R Dual layer media. Recording of DVD-RW and -R media seems versatile enough, just have to remember to 'finalize' your disk before trying to play the disk on other players. Easily backed up my Handi-Cam tapes onto DVD and used the Auto-Chapter function. Works Great.
Remote is a bit small and you seem to actually have to "read" the buttons.
Have this unit connects to my LG 37LC2D TV. Great Picture, but there seems to be no program code available for this DVD Player to program into the Universal Remote that came with the TV. IE, your stuck with using 2 remotes. |

Hello,
I have had trouble playing some DVD titles with this player. The titles were all Anime and I got no video. Samsung was no help. When my wife called Samsung the employee said to go ahead and return it.
I went into the setup menu and into video setup and changed HDMI output from 720P to 480P and that worked. I e-mailed Samsung asking if they can fix this with a firmware upgrade and I am waiting for a reply.

So far this DVD player has turned out pretty well. The directory structure to pick and choose movies is very nice, showing details on the files selected, and doens't seem to have the long finename issue that the RCA DRC8060n had.
It has been able to play every dvix/xvid movie I have thrown at it. Some oddly encoded videos played at 1.5x as normal speed, but all my normally encoded full length movies have been playing just fine.
It can read most media formats, just not write on anything but DVD-R/W. This is somewhat disappointing because I picked up a 25 spindle of DVD+RWs for my old DVD recorder.
The last thing I wanted to add, is this player has no cooling fan. The enclosure is extremely hot, to the point of hurting while holding it. Opening up the unit and feeling around, some of the key parts like the MPEG encoding chip, ram, mofset heatsink, and control board could practically boil water. I can barely hold my finger on them for a second before it hurts. I have noticed that all the other units with cooling fans have a full size optical drive in them enclosing the entire reading/writing structure. Since this model has an open and fixed custom drive assembly, maybe it didn't have a fan to prevent dust from getting on the optics?
Using a IR Temp gun at the various hot spots, the MPEG/CPU thing is around 55-60C, then ram is around 45-50C, and the power regulators are about 50C or so. |
