This seems to be a pretty good player. The real reason I wrote this "review" is to let people know that it does not play DVD+R DL. I tried Memorex DVD+R DL 2.4x. Works fine in my computer but says no disc on the DVD727's display. I called Philips and they confirmed that this player is not compatible with DVD+R DL.

This player worked fine for a while, after about four months it started to make noises. It does not play VCDs, and only plays some SVCDs. It doesn't play burnt dvds and it doesn't play DVD-SVCD. The design is very nice though. But I rather have a cheap dvd-payer that plays, vcds etc. The quality is pretty good too. I didn't have any technical problems with it. It just doesn't play variety of media.

Got this unit at Best Buy for 59.95. I have a large collection of VCDs and it would not play any one of them. It would however play SVCDs and DVD+Rs. Didn't feel like trying things to make it work with VCDs so it went back. Good price if you don't need VCDs.

Beware of the setup menu. The display settings caused me a problem I almost didn't recover from. Since I have an older 4:3 ratio TV without progressive scan, I had to use the S-Video hookup. When this option was highlighted in the setup menu, I pressed the enter button thinking this would select this option. Wrong, it switched to 525i and I lost the video. I should have hit the return button. The same problem will occur if you hit the right arrow key when S-Video is highlighted. Without video you can't see the menu on the screen and therefor can't make any changes. I got around the problem with the following:
With a DVD in the palyer turn the player off and then back on. Press the stop button. Press the menu button. Press the down arrow key twice. Press the right arrow key. Press the down arrow key 5 times and press enter. If the video does not return, press return 4 or 5 times to ensure you are out of the menu. Go through the above steps once again. Your video should return. Aside from this problem, I am happy with the quality of the player.

Played my DVD-VCD which was created with SVCD2DVD and burned with Nero.

Would not play my DVD-MP3 disc which was burned with Nero as an ISO/UDF 1.02 disc.

Had some trouble with my mixed WMA/MP3 disc but it was a mini cd-r disc so maybe that was why.

SVCD on CD-RW played flawlessly.

I would have rated this player higher but for one very irritating problem. It worked perfectly when I first set it up except that it had subtitles turned on by default, and the subtitles button on the remote did nothing. After about an hour, I decided that I wanted to watch the movie in Letterbox format. I switched to the menu and selected "Letterbox". As I was about to exit the menu, I noticed a setting for "Display", and "On" was selected. Thinking that it might eliminate the subtitles, I selected "Off", little realizing that I was making a fatal mistake. I not only lost all video; I could no longer view any menu to correct it. I can't believe they even put that setting in the menu. I tried for almost an hour to get video back, but nothing worked. The Power button still worked, and I could still start, stop and pause the movie, but only audio. No picture whatsoever. I called Samsung tech support, and they said they had never heard of such a problem. The tech was friendly and offered 3 possible solutions. He assured me that one of them would certainly work. Of course none of them did. I had to take it back to Sears to re-order a replacement, and it will take a month for it to come in. I'm waiting the month because I got it at a price below any advertised price I've ever seen for any DVD player anywhere; anytime. The picture and audio quality of the player was excellent, but beware fooling around with the menu if you're not 100% sure what you're doing.

Only reason I give this a 7 is the interface is kinda clunky looking, doesn't have all the features you'd like but great playback for such a cheap player. remote could use some work. But has played almost everything I have tried.
Doesn't seem to have a media pref, I have used TDK,compusa crap, princo, prime, precision, memorex and some other cheapo CDR they all worked. So far have only tried Media Pro DVD-R

May 2003 build date. Some svcds played with no audio delay, the rest didn't play, none had a delay. Would not play mp3s on a dvd. Distorted low bitrate mono mp3's (ie: audiobook mp3s on a cd-r) - may be a mono/stereo thing or a non-44100 hz thing. Manual says they must be 128 k/s. None of my vcds worked (different media). The box says that it plays svcd,mp3,wma,jpeg,dvd but leaves out saying vcd so not a surprise. Does not have a "go to" then enter time function, but it does have a bookmark place in video function.

Bought this player to view SVCD. Almost all SVCD discs seem to have audio out of sync about 1/2 second. Also noticed the behaviour when using search then pressing play goes back to the start of that chapter when menus are turned on. All CD-R media seem to work ok, Memorex, TDK, Verbatim, no name(with audio out of sync problems though). Chapters work ok. Can only search at 8 times rate with SVCD.

I was NOT able to get VCD working on this player. I tried both TDK and Memorex discs and I tried burning at different speeds but it wouldn't read them. It plays SVCD perfectly so I find it bizarre that they don't have support for VCD, but I was not able to make it work.

Comments:
Two major SVCD problems: Sound is out-of-sync by about 1/2 seconds. I have tested this with my older Samsung 421 and on two computers with WinDVD4, and the sound is perfect there. So my disc is good. The problem is the Samsung P231. Eg. there was a scene when someone slamed the car door, but the sound was delayed by about 1/2 second! Very annoying. When people talk, it looks like all their voices were dubed!

Second problem: If you try to fast-forward with menu ON, as soon as you release the fast-forward search, it will return to the begining of that chapter! However, if you turn OFF menu, the fast-forward works and you can continue from where you release the fast-forward button.

NOTE: The above problems occured ONLY with SVCD. I tried it with regular DVDs, and no problems were found.

I went back to BESTBUY to exchange for a different P231, and have exactly the same problems. The sticker on the back of my DVD says it was manufactured in Feb/2003.

PROS: I copied a 40 jpg files onto a CDRW and it played them all perfectly. It takes about 2 seconds to move between slides though.

Also, I burned a 90min SVCD and it played it smoother (with the 1/2 second sound delay as mentioned). My old DVD can not play 90min discs.

Since I needed a DVD to play my SVCDs, I am going to return this player. I really liked the JPEG feature though.

Bought this one at Sears for $89 + tax. The P230 is the same player but in black. The P331 is one level up with front panel navigation keys and headphone jacks. Only the P331 has optical audio output. The 230/231 does not have optical audio output.

I tried several discs at the store and this one seems to play all the discs I had at that time except for a PAL format DVD. According to the manual, it is a NTSC-only player. Forget this one if you want to play PAL discs.

SVCD playing is working, the LCD screen and on-screen display recognize the disk as CVD version 2.0.

The player is based on a Zoran Vaddis 5E chipset. The firmware is in a surface mounted 29F008 chip, which cannot be easily removed to read the firmware.
