MP3 WMA CVD? $200 over 1 year 5 of 10 DVD-WMA DVD-MP3 Comments: NUON was kind of a nice idea. Too bad it never went anywhere. This player is not very reliable. It often rejects discs it was playing only a few minutes earlier. It is sometimes necessary to open and close the tray a couple times to get a disc to play. It often starts skipping on mp3 discs. The worst failure of this player is that it WILL NOT play several 2003 Fox releases. "Miller's Crossing", "Barton Fink" and "28 Days Later" are 3 examples. I believe it does not play the remake of "Solaris" as well. I'm sure there are many others. The firmware update linked below does NOT fix this problem.

N/A 7 of 10 JPG/JPEG Comments: Initial Firmware update in 2001 fixed some Audio/video sync problems experienced with some movies. Now, in 2004, I am having problems with newer DVD movies. 1. "Shallow Hal" refuses to play in the player. It locks up at the initial movie warnings about illegal copying. 2. "Kill Bill vol. 1" has major audio/video sync problems when playing any of the "special features". Apparently, there has not been any firmware updates since 2001. I doubt they still support this model.

I bought it because it was on sale and I read on this site that it supported SVCD which it doesn't. VCD does work however.

N/A 8 of 10 Comments: This player worked absolutely perfect and flawlessly until I got into the hobby of making my own DVD-R discs! It is almost impossible to find good DVD-R media to burn to that would not skip randomly on this player. In my research I learned that there are at 3! different types of TDK DVD-R 2X discs out there (all labled the same), and any one 1 type works well with this player without the skips. I have cheapy discs too, and they skip/pause all over the movie. I ended up buying a Pioneer DV-260 player at Walmart for $78. Now ALL my DVD-R movies play FLAWLESSLY. Even the ones on the cheapo discs. The N501 is great player for DVD-Video, MP3s, and nuon. It's got a super zoom, and lots of playback options. But for playing DVD-Rs, it just doesn't cut it.

If anyone has made one that works, Email me with the details. However VCDs and XVCDs work GREAT, their are problems with audio sync on videos of length (i.e Episodes of Star Trek :) but shorter clips work without a hitch (Music Videos). I'd also like to point out the player is EXTREMELY dust sensitive, alot of the problems people experience with their DVDs can be solved by using a drive cleaner. Everytime I notice a screw up, I just use my Memorex cleaner and she usually works, but sometimes its a glitch. Past its flaws the N-501 has the most bang for the buck. And the VLM is great too.

CVD? $150 N/A 7 of 10 Comments: I'm using a Sony DRU500AX burner and MyDVD v4 software. My PC is home built with a 1GHz P3, 512 MB RAM and SCSI Ultra160 HDDs. I created slide shows with the JPG files I took on my last vacation. The Sony DVD+RW disc (came with the drive) was NOT recognized by the Samsung N501. A Memorex DVD+R worked in the N501. A Memorex DVD-RW did NOT work. A Memorex DVD-R worked.

N/A 8 of 10 MP3 long filename Comments: Just got a new SONY VAIO with Gigapocket Video features and combo DVD+ DVD- burner. So far I've tried one DVD+RW and one DVD-RW from shows I had recorded on the Vaio. I used the included DVD-IT Sony software. The DVD-RW played flawlessly. the DVD+RW started playing ok. After a few minutes it seemed to start freezing and then starting at random intervals. When I started putting it in fast speed to skip commercials it completely froze up. After that it would not play that DVD at all. In fact it stopped even recognizing the disk at all. I tested the DVD in my burner drive and it played fine. I will continue to experiment.

N/A No rating Comments: I bought this for my parents so I can make SVCDs of our home videos and mail it to them so they can watch. Just a comment about the SVCD compatibility. I got it to work using the VCD header trick, but only when I burned using Nero. It wouldn't work using VCDEasy. Not sure why, 'cause the VCD header works using VCDEasy with my Panasonic DVD-RV30. Fortunately, the Nero burned one works with the RV30 as well.

Has a ton of cool DVD features, plays CDRs, CDRWs, MP3s, VCDs, XVCDs (encoded at 2500 kb/s in TMPGEnc and recorded in Roxio WinOnCD 3.8 Power Edition). VCD playback is fine. All menus, slideshows, etc. were displayed correctly. NOTE: The colors were slightly off when the video was shown at the 1X size. This becomes obvious if you shrink the video to 0.5X. The player cannot play SVCDs in typical fashion. You have to apply the VCD header trick for SVCDs to work, but the trick DOES WORK!!! After applying the VCD header with TMPGEnc and burning with Nero, the SVCD playback was perfect! NOTE: You have to use burning software that doesn't require compliancy (i.e., Nero). For example, Roxio WinOnCD requires that the stream is fully-compliant before allowing it to be added. The player also has a region hack! Woohoo! You need to get an Aiwa remote control though. The player seems to be media-sensitive. Cheap CDRs choke in the player (random artifacts, pausing, audio-video sync issues, etc.). I stick to TDK which function flawlessly. Imation and Memorex CDRs are okay. CDRWs are flawless (even generic ones).

N/A 9 of 10 MP3 long filename Comments: despite other reports, this *CAN* play SVCD!!! you just have to specially prepare the MPEG stream before burning: go to TMPGENC's mpeg tools. on the Merge & Cut tab, add the SVCD stream. from the list at the top, select MPEG-1 Video-CD. note that this does NOT re-encode the movie!!! select an output file and click run. after it finishes rewriting the file, go to Nero and start a new VCD project. NOT SVCD, VCD! add the file that you made with tmpgenc. nero will complain that the file is not standards-compliant. just click turn off standards compliance. burn the disc. to the player, it LOOKS like a VCD, but in reality, it IS a MPEG-2 SVCD! this just shows that they disabled SVCD playing or were just too lazy to code the disc detection. hopefully, true SVCD support will be added in a later firmware upgrade, as there IS a light on the front for SVCD. NOTE: ive been told that this hack works with other brands of players that wont normally play SVCD. try it and see!

CVD? $175 N/A 9 of 10 MP3 long filename Comments: I love this dvd player! I have owned 2 others before this (an RCA and an Apex). This one blows the other two out of the water. I burn a lot of movies into vcd format and this unit will play them flawlessly. The only downside of it is that it will not play svcd. It will also play a disk full of mp3s too. I havent really tested out the nuon features except for the planet of the apes movie and the game that comes with the unit. I wasnt too impressed with the movie and the game pretty much sucked too but I did find a website where you can download games like pac-man and joust and other old-school games. They claim you just burn them to cd and then play them in the n501 but I wasnt able to get it to work. I havent had any problems with the video and audio being out of synch either. I've seen other reviews where people complain about that but I havent had that problem. To sum it all up. I went out shopping for a dvd player with a perfect picture, perfect sound, optical digital audio output and it had to be vcd and mp3 compatible. I bought the samsung n501 and have been happy with it ever since.

N/A 4 of 10 MP3 long filename MP3 ID3 TAG Comments: This thing is cool, but also pretty dissapointing. I don't know what the other users are smoking, but SVCD doesn't work *at all*. Maybe i got a bad player or something? I did notice there is a spot on the front LED for "SVCD" to light up. Huh. VCD works, but pretty badly. Audio desyncs, crap outs, etc. MP3 works, but again very badly. Plays about 1 in 3 of my burned MP3 discs, and only some CBR songs, and 0 VBRs. I've also had it skip around and not play anything off a few MP3 burned CD-rs. Huh. Plays audio cds and burned audio discs. No big suprise. VLM is cool, but it doesn't make up for the other letdowns. NUON is dead, essentially. The remote looks cool but has pretty bad control in most situations. Too bad no one ever coded a DIVX player for the NUON chip (?), then this thing would be worth it. I intend to replace it with a cheap APEX that will play everything/

No updates, no hitting special settings, or anything. Also plays mp3's very nice (oh and get this... it plays DVD's too!). My only complaint is the machine is slow at loading CD's/DVD's and even slower at loading something Nuon enhanced.

It provides 15 characters of the file and very easy to navigate + Plays every type of vcd and xvcd thus far. + Cool Virtual Light Machine For The Music, which my kids love. + can make your own games http://www.dev.nuon.tv/ + you can get pac-man for it free: http://www.nuon-dome.com/files/pacman12.zip + Very Nice and Well thought out pop up menus. + Extremely Crisp Zoom and slow motion + reads even pretty scratched up discs + Plays every bitrate on CBR mp3 up to 320, highest I've tried. + firmware upgradeable and the site actually offers firmware upgrades. WOW. - remote, the joystick navigation is finicky and I can see it needing to be replaced after some usage. Basically Buy the extended warranty, just to cover the remote. - no random or shuffle at all. - no program feature - no total time or time left display - the manual sucks - initial load time takes forever on any disc - lack of games for nuon - VM labs maker of the nuon processor filed for reorganization aka bankruptcy. http://www.vmlabs.com/reorg.html - lack of movies nuon enhanced, there are three. bedazzled, dr. dolittle 2, & planet of the apes. The nuon features for these movies aren't that fab. - you can't fast forward or rewind during play on an mp3 song. - very finicky and doesn't like many vbr mp3 files. I figured I'd toss this out for consideration. Though if your looking for mp3 capability along with the dvd features. This Player is actually one of the better ones. The only other player I'd even consider is the pioneer 440, which doesn't have the hdcd processor, but has a ton of functionality and features.

CVD? $229 N/A 10 of 10 Comments: One last thing, burn VCD and SVCD using Nero 5.5, and let Nero do all the corrections that the program tell you, because the program makes all the changes to make the VCD works at normal standards... I do this and never again have any problems with audio sincs, freeze images, etc... And if you want to do your photo albums, e-mail me for help... and i'll send you the program to do photo albums with midi songs.

CVD? $229 N/A 10 of 10 Comments: Now i discover that you can do photo albums, from a program that came with a development kit from http://developer.vmlabs.com/devnuonreg/license.html, not to big (you can put about 4 to 4.5 mb of photos at 740 x 280 jpg, about 40 pictures with midi melodies and songs, funny or not?) but the rest of the CD you can complete with Mp3... and you can hear wav and midi songs with nuon features, and you can burn 3 games (not to great games) but... at least are games!!! THE ONLY DVD PLAYER WHERE YOU CAN LISTEN MIDI SONGS!!!!

CVD? $229 N/A 10 of 10 Comments: I live in Chile, Samsung Chile bring 2 of this with the intention to sell it, but i don't know what happens!!! Well, a friend of SAMSUNG Chile sell me one for only USD 70 (came with Ballistic and 1 joystick) and told me that wouldn't serve because is zone 1 (Southamerica is zone 4) and the bios was 1.41 (old), i upgraded the bios burning on a CDRW Samsung and work great was the first thing i do. Then i saw in SAMSUNG CHILE that they have an Extiva and a N705 (I think was N709, but i'm wrong) European PAL system and I remember that here saw that Extiva works with an Aiwa remote control, we get an Aiwa RC and start to play, what discovery was awesome, the N705, the only N501 that left and the Extiva have the same features activated by Aiwa RC, in my home i get the RC from my brother Aiwa (NSX-200) and start to play my zone 4 DVDs, then i put a zone 3 DVD that my uncle gave to me and the same, i haven't probe with zone 2 DVD, but anyone in Europe can do it. I'm still studying the Player, and my friend will obtain to me an Aiwa Super RC with a ton of features and an universal RC compatible with Aiwa to see if we can put region free permanently and if we can eliminate the Macrovision. SO... NUON COMUNITY BE ALERT!!! BECAUSE WHEN I FIGURED HOW TO DISABLED AND WORK TO FULL WITH THE PLAYER I INFORM TO ALL!!! the player is great, i have a SONY WEGA and the quality, the zoom, and other features works great better than the DVD Pioneer of my parents. If you want to experiment with Universal RC and Super Aiwa RC, be my guests!!! and inform to all your discoverys!!! And the Nuon features, and the development KIT from Nuon web site (http://www.nuon.tv) (http://www.dev.nuon.tv), makes me think that anyone with Java or C+ skills can make some Nuon program to see other formats of movies, i know because i saw some DIVX are made in C+ and one for Linux or Unix is made in JAVA... The zoom is amazing you can zoom in up to 15X... The only thing you must do is to burn VCD and SVCD with a great program like VCDImager, or other like that..

I tried playing back XVCDs recorded at 3500 kb/s and the player couldn't handle the bitrate, resulting in very slooooow playback. At 2500 kb/s, playback was full speed and smooth. I couldn't playback a SVCD-encoded video. However, it was a homemade product and I haven't found any documentation to indicate SVCD capability so I'm not going to try again (no more wasted CD's!). The player also has a region hack! Woohoo! You need to get an Aiwa remote control though.
