N/A No rating Comments: I tried this player at a friends house. He has both the M101, and A P721M. The 721 is worthless; it didn't play squat... but this little m101 instantly started to play BOTH TDK +R and -R disks that came with the 440 burner mentioned in another comment. We haven't tried any other disc types yet.

CVD? $125 N/A 1 of 10 Comments: Plays commercial DVDs and VCDs (I only have one commercial VCD - The Prince of Egypt, Korean release, bonus with the I Love CCM AudioCD collection set; but this movie works fine). Also plays DVD-R. However, this player does not play CD-R/CD-RW with anything on it (AudioCD, VCD, or anything else). It's a single laser design, which is it's problem here. It also breaks up with commercial DVDs at times (once a movie or so). The anamorphic decompression is terrible compared to my new (and half the price) Daewoo player. With the THX anamorphic test pattern up on the screen, my new Daewoo looks smooth (and remember, the Daewoo is a cheap cheap player) and the Samsung is all jaggedy and aliased. This player wasn't necessarily bad when I bought it, in fact I was quite happy with it for a short while; but if you find one today - just avoid it!

When it comes to burned dvds then it has its share of problems. Burned dvds skip and pause. For just playing regular dvds it works great. Used Memorex dvd+r,and dvd+rw with a tdk indi 440 burner.

N/A No rating Comments: I used Sony DVD+RW with this player with some success. It doesn't like it and sometimes it rejects it but it does take them eventually. I've used Maxell DVD-Rs without too many problems.

N/A 5 of 10 Comments: CD-R may work with select brands. I have got some Memorex discs that ALMOST work (play, but not very well (lots of skipping). My one and only DVD-R I was given does work. CDRW hasn't worked for me, but I've only tried one (a Memorex) - so I don't know, some might. Picture is good, but it breaks up occasionally. This DVD player just isn't great. You get what you pay for, but I think you can get more for the same money these days. So I'd suggest avoiding this player.

N/A No rating Comments: I want to thank VCDhelp for all the help, tutorials, and programs for burning VCDs. Once I learned how to write VCDs using VCDEasy, CDRDAO and forcing ASPI v4.60 my Samsung DVD-M101 plays VCDs 1.1 and 2 with no problems. So far I have successfully used DigitalMedia 700MB CD-Rs and Memorex CD-RW. Thank You.

Burned an vcd on the disk and work wonderfully. The player does seem to have problems if the DVD's aren't clean. Scratches are about 50/50 on whether they will work. This is the ONLY color I was able to make it work with and even I have to try it a few times before it will work.

I burned the DVD's on the Sony DRU-500A using Sonic MyDVD that was included in the software package.

All failed... until I tried multi colored Fujifilm CD-R's 80 min, Burned with VCDEasy, works like a champ !

CVD? $100 N/A 7 of 10 Comments: I've been trying to make vcd's for this dvd player for a while. I tried burning it at 1x on media that couldn't get to work before and it didn't work. I have only been able to get media with a specific shade of green to work. These are the brands; Maxell CD-R 650mb (if you can find it.), PNY CD-R 700mb (high performance high density), and TDK 700mb 24x CD-R. The generic brand Prime Peripherals also works very well. All of these have a specific type of green tint. I tried searching the samsung site for laser specifications but I have had no luck. Not all the green media works though, imation makes media that strongly resembles the green of the before mentioned but it doesn't work. If anyone finds out the secret please let me in on it. N/A No rating Comments: I think I've stumbled on the key. While searching out other DVD players, being upset that this one would not work with CD-R media. I found another review that suggested burning the VCD at 1X ---- IT WORKED every disk I've burned since works like a champ!! No matter the name on the media, no matter the color of the media. CVD? $125 N/A 6 of 10 Comments: This DVD player will play SVCD's and VCD's that your burn yourself. However you have to use Fujifilm CD-R's. No other type has worked for me and I have tried Memorex, Maxwell, and Office Depot. It has a very clear picture sometimes better than my RCA RC5240P even thought that plays practically everything. As long as you buy Fujifilm you should be ok.

CVD? $200 N/A 2 of 10 Comments: Disappointed that all attempts at reading xxVCD's failed, for that matter any "non-commercial" disc failed to load. (Had me wondering about my production process for a while!- My other Mintek1600 plays all flawlessly, though!) Unit ended up being more expensive than others reported. Wow. Component outputs nice for LCD projectors, though on a REALLY saturated image, such as computer animation, the red LAGS by a few uS/pels (barely noticable on a monitor). Optical 5.1 audio output jitters a bit, too - most often on fast transitions between front & rear planes (no pun intended, but an airplane IS a good example.) This DOES NOT happen on the analog L/R output through a 5.1 receiver. Weird. Maybe the LED is being overdriven? Not fond of the lack of user option control, such as pause time, screensaver blanking (can't go to black...) It's profile does fit nicely in a 19" rackspace, though - 2 u. Would I get another one? Nope. Will I still use the one I have. Sure. Pix quality is ok, and hey, it's a DVD player. It plays DVD's.

CVD? $100 N/A 4 of 10 Comments: Either questionable comments or a questionable product. Other people here have said they've had some luck playibg CD-R's. But you must be very lucky/putting me on or the M101 is of random manufactuer quality. I have access to over 12 brands of CD-R and NONE of them will play in the Samsung M101. All store bought/factory DVD's and audio CD's play fine. I have a friend who's giving me a VCD he burned to try out. I also orderd a Pink Floyd VCD...we'll see if they work. The user's guide does say that this is a VCD player (oh...brother, customer service, here I come). However, like somebody else here said, the user's guide plainly says, an i quote "* DO NOT play CD-ROM, CD-I, CD-R and DVD-ROM in this player! (CDG's play audio only, not graphics.)" Well there you go. If folks out there are playing CD-R's, then you my friends are really lucky! I wish I could do the same. I'd figure I could, seeing as that we both have a M101. Perhaps more recently manufactued models are the one's that can play CD-R. I think Samsung has a questionable product. But you get what you pay for. But if the VCD does't play, I'll be VERY upset.

CVD? $100 N/A 8 of 10 Comments: Here is what worked for me..... Memorex CD-R 50pack...writes up to 24X!! The label around the spindal has a purple background. It also says below 80min 24X..so make sure. Worked the first time i put it in....with no problems.

BUT it sucks at reading CDR and CDRW it is very picky. if you get it right (the cdr) it takes the player some time to load it, overrall i don't recommend if you want to make your own vcd i am getting rid of mine for a pioneer any buyers??

CVD? $100 N/A 5 of 10 Comments: The VCD is very picky about what kind of disk you uses to burn with, Ive used menorx, Imation, and a cheep no name brand I got from Comp USA 100 pack of 80 min and the one that works is the cheep ones. They have a silver top and silver bottom and I burn with nero, nero has no problem with these disks ever. The vidio is a little less than perfict but am looking for a better quilty disk that the M101 will work with. Can any one help?
