I have a Samsung HD860. I bought it when it was hot (April 2006). I used to watch occational movies on DVD. Never tried the VCD or SVCD because it was never advertised. I recently saw that this player was capable of playing DivX. But most of the blogs only had a way to unlock the region free code.
I saw a few posts here where people were mentioning that the option of DivX play back didn't exist in their units. I was in the same boat.
After a few futile attempts I was able to find a firmware update to this product. I had to download it from Samsung's website and write a CD with the update. It is a 1MB file that updates the firmware from version *2006* to *2007*. '*' refers to some junk alpha numeric characters. The link to the firmware is below.
http://www.samsung.com/download/Model_Select.aspx ... ;language=
Insert the data CD in to the tray, select the install option on the screen. The installation takes ~10 minutes. Eject the CD (if it does not eject, turn off and turn on again).
Now you will have the DivX registration on your setup menu. Enjoy VCDs, SVCDs and DivX on your Samsung HD860. |

If you read through this thread, you will notice that all the Canadians are able to play divx/xvid just fine.
If you do a little Googling, you will see Brits and Aussies report that they can play divx/xvid just fine, that this feature is advertised on the box, and that there is a divx section in the gui menu system.
For those in the US, check out the Samsung Australia manual for the HD860. Notice how often they mention DIVX functionality.
http://org.downloadcenter.samsung.com/downloadfil ... 2_book.pdf
Well, us Yanks cannot play divx/xvid, and Samsung USA does not advertise divx compatability on the box either.
Seems the US players have been crippled via firmware. I'm assuming that the internals of the models sold in the US market vs/ Canada, Asia and Europe are the same.
On the bright side, this player is supposed to have downloadable firmware updates that you can perform yourself. What we really needs is a firmware update that fixes common problems such as "pausing" for a brief time while playing a DVD. If us folks in the US market could download the firmware from a European or Australin Samsung website, I think we would be much more satisfied with this player. Unfortunately, it looks like it is a waiting game.

I live in Canada. I bought this DVD player from FutureShop.
Here's the region-free hack which I used in order to make my Samsung 860 play all Region 2, 3 and 5 DVDs:
This works with the Samsung remote supplied with the DVD player.
Turn on the Player with no disc on the tray. The tv screen and the dvd lcd will display "No Disk"
2. Press the "Repeat" key on the Samsung remote control
3. Press the keys: "5 7 5 3 8" on the remote. Number 2 appears on the screen for a short time.
4. Press "9". Number 9 is displayed on the screen.
5. Press the "Open/close" button in the remote. The tray will open. Leave it open for a few seconds.
6. Just press the "On/off" button in the remote.
7. You now have a multi-region dvd player!!

I'm very pleased with this player! |

About DVD+R DL, I can't say "only with" but mine have BitSetting DVD-ROM.
It plays XviD and DivX avi files from MULTISESSION written DVD+RW disks, independent if the avi files are placed in the root of the disks or in separate folders.
The user manual states : “DivX 5 contents (MPEG-4 simple profile plus additional
features such as bi-directional frames. Qpel and GMC are also supported.)“
With XviD 1.1 Final version of the codec:
- B-VOP (Max consecutive B-VOPs: 2): Yes
- Packed bitstream: Yes
- GMC (3 warp points) is NOT supported, the result is a jerky playback (no continuity and plenty or artifacts).
NTSC to PAL conversion for playback on a PAL TV works great, no “hiccups” at all!
Region code hack posted by RF expert, June 11 2006 on this site (http://www.videohelp.com/dvdhacks.php?select=Samsung+DVD-HD860) worked flawless.

Finally the manipulation given to me by Samsung (see two posts below) didn't work out, the DivX registration option didn't exist in the 860's menu that I had. Called Samsung and they said no other firmware is available, the online store where I bought the refurbished unit told me to return it and I bought a new one from Best Buy, this one has a DivX label on the front that the first one I bought didn't have and it plays DivX without any problems! Now I just have to figure out which region free hack is the good one...
I am sure the HD860 has a few things that could be better but it does what I need now, less support for the two SACD's I have somewhere.... |

To get any of my files to play, I had to put the files in a specific folder on the disc. ie. I couldn't just load up a dvd with files without putting them in a folder.
To get them to play, put the dvd in the player and wait for the screen to pop up displaying what is on the disc. If you put all of your files in folders, you should just see the names of these folders instead of the files on the disc. Push enter on the folder with the file that you want to play. When you are in the folder, you should see all of the files that you have placed there, as well as "..." at the top. If you push enter when the "..." is selected, you will be brought to the parent folder. However, if you push play on the "...", the first file in the folder will begin playing.
To change to another file, push the info button and select which title you want corresponding to where the file was displayed in the folder. |

Just got the HD860 and out of the box it played almost anything I tried, even converts PAL to NTSC, the reason I bough this. However it didn't play DIVX so I was kind of dissapointed, especially given the users manual says it does. After calling up Samsung support and being put on hold for three or four times they eventually gave me a code that activated DIVX playback on the HD860, just use the regular remote provided:
press MENU
press DOWN ARROW 3x to highlight SETUP
press RIGHT ARROW 1x
press DOWN ARROW 3x to highlight DIVX REGISTRATION
press ENTER, done
haven't tried this yet because I am at work, but I hope this is true! |

This thing is a piece of shit. Attempting to play any DivX or Xvid does not work. I tried re-encoding the file, removing bitstream packaging, and QPEL/GMC, makes no difference. The disc is read and the filelist comes up, but it WILL NOT play them.
Also noticed the upconversion tries to work too hard. Some movies are grainy and pixelated.
Skips on some DVDs (non-burned).
I would spend your $100 on a different player. I am still waiting on Samsung to get back to me on whether it actually supports DivX. The Zoran 888 chipset supports DivX 3-6/Xvid, warp mode up to 3, etc. Has Samsung disabled these capabilities? |

The Player locks up or just goes back to the start of the video when using skip or Fast Forward on Mpeg-2s on a DVD. These functions work correctly on Divx file though. |

Plays music MP3 WMA on data DVDs. Not just CDs.
Plays Mpeg-2 video files copied from computer to DVD-RW. This saves multi-hour software conversion to DVD for viewing on TV. Captured from Hauppauge WinTV PVR 250 720x480 Video, Mpeg Audio Layer 2.
Plays DivX, XviD on CD-RW or DVD-RW. |

| It's a great player EXCEPT it DOES NOT play Divx or Xvid. I've spent two hours on the phone with Samsung and they told me directly it does not support those (also no mention in user manual). If someone knows how to make it work, PLEASE send me a link to where it shows how! Plays everything great so far though... |
