The Good:

- quality of the device (better than cheap brands, nice finish, cool blue led for power button)

- plays all my xvid/divx movies perfectly

- image quality is very good

- high speed backward/forward tracking and slow motion

- all input/outputs you can get (HDMI, SVideo, etc)

The Bad:

- quality, its good but its not as good as a SONY.

- folder viewer reads 8 or 10 first characters only

- no cool features (picture grab, use picture as screensaver etc) like my SONY dvd player.

- setup options are few/weak, doesn't allow much customization.

Overall:

Its a great DVD player, it plays everything i've tried without a single problem (i've made sure my xvids are all good quality and not broken). It has great picture quality and can be connected with any imaginable way.

Unfortunately, its not as high quality as my SONY and it has 1/3'rd or even less of the setup options that my SONY dvd player has. Its setup is very basic indeed.

Love this player having moved to Ireland 5 years ago and bringing my 300 plus dvd collection with me from Canada I was unable to find a good player that was as easy as this one to hack as a region free player and as for divx files have not found one yet it will not play compared to my LG and Philips which played very few may buy a second as a back up

I have purchased yesterday a Samsung DVD HD-850 in Australia. The player is playing everything what they say in the manual, but some of the MPEG-4 movies are shown on my 16:9 42" plasma, in the wrong aspect ratio and can not be corrected by the player setting functions.
For example the XviD 344x286, 480x212, 576x256, 624x240, 688x288 and so on frame sizes are streched to the 16:9 aspect ratio on the tv screen and the figures are obviously out of proportion. Like I said before, no EZ view or anything I was trying in the setup menu of the player could correct the dis-formed picture.
My tv is a Panasonic 42" plasma, with HDMI connection, and when I am playing MPEG-4 (DivX, XviD) movies it is a digital-to-digital transfer so it should display straight what comes from the Samsung HD-850 player or rather the original MPEG-4 aspect ratio.
Unfortunately the player does not do this.
I called Samsung technical support today and the gentleman who answered my call informed me, that the unit is faulty take it back to the store, because the EZ view should work regardless what I am playing. So I did that. I got the brand new player out of the box doing the same thing.

Bought this player to feed my new HD LCD (Panasonic AE-900) beamer with HDMI. I use it with the up-conversion set to 720p and the image is fantastic. It also play’s my VCD and SVCD’s and even converts the MPEG2 audio to PCM so I don’t need to switch my Dolby receiver to the analog input. No problem with homebrew audio cd’s and cd’s or dvd’s with mp3 songs on it. WMA is also supported but you can’t use WMA and MP3 on the same disk!

Play’s also my DiVx cd’s and dvd’s even with AC3 soundtracks. However, when playing DivX, the original aspect ratio is lost due to the fact that the player zoom-in to fill the 16:9 mode. As a result of the zooming the subs are not visible. The EZ function does not work in DiVx mode so if you want to buy it for playing DiVx make an other choice!
My LG 7500 recorder does that job much better keeping the aspect ratio and displaying clean sub’s.

The trick with the remote to make it regionfree also works. I’ve also try the HDCP hack but I can’t test it because my beamer is HDCP enabled…

In my country this player support DivX/Xvid with *.srt subtitles -which was the main reason for buying it (of course, playback quality is expected to be good). And here's my conclusion after 2 hours(?) of use with Sony Trinitron 4:3 flat TV.

Pluses:
+Solid build quality feeling (it's not cheap though),
+Good video quality,
+Plays DivX/Xvid with *.srt subtitles,
+Ready for HDTV,
+EZ View feature

Minuses:
-Long loading of DivX files,
-Srt subtitles have fixed size and fixed position,
-Srt subtitles are not correct displayed (added space between words -weird),
-Long names are not displayed,
-Loud mechanism when open/close tray and during seeking of media (much worse than my NEC DVD writer),
-No firmware till now (needed for srt subtitles),

Conclusion:
I had Sony DVP-NS765 DVD player before (which was of better quality than Samsung)), but it didn't had DivX *.srt support and it dind't played Xvid (except if FourCC was changed).
After Sony I bought Xoro HSD415 which I still have. Xoro plays everything I throw in. Video quality isn't the best (compared to Sony), but mechanism is quieter than Samsung's.
Samsung also refused to load CD-R which contained 8 very short DivX avi's (for test purposes). Maybe because avi files didn't contain any audio track... Well, cheapo Xoro plays it all!
I'll give Samsung another try during weekend -and then I'll return it -it's not worth the money.

Luv the player have an HD841 also.

HDMI works flawlessly on my DLP Projo which I cant say for the HDMI output on the LG418 player I initially picked up which had syncing problems.

Only problem even though it supports DIVX Xvid I cant get it to read the divx xvid files when I put them on a DVD-R.

Maybe you all can help out is there anything special that needs to be done? Special format for burning? or something else. I saw a mention of a firmware upgrade for divx but didnt find any on the Samsung Site.

Any help would be appreciated

Picture is very good audio seem ok (this is my secondary AV set so I use the lcd speakers) .

Plays Divx/Xvid normaly (just like Pioneer 470 I had) in the box sais "upgrade divx playback by website" ... don't know what they mean about that.. mine plays out of the box.

No problems at all with DL media, or other in any kind, just tried a few.

In everything seems to be a nice player at a very good price 140Euros.

Plays dvd+rw, but only if NOT bitset to DVD-ROM! I used my BenQ writer to reformat my stack of +rw's to +RW booktype, and now I can use them in the Samsung.
This player plays almost everything I have tried. (A BVOP xvid file with 5 channel ac3 sound failed.)
The menu system for file playback is very fast compared to my Philips DVP630 (= 642 in the US) and the quality of image and sound is far superior, even connected via scart video.
Easyview (one button selection of various aspect ratio and zoom modes) is great when viewing dvd's, but not available when watching files. Good remote.
Subtitles in divx are just as small and hard to read as with the Philips.

Bought this at a military exchange recently and is a Region 1 player, but model number is AFS, unlike a typical R1 USA player. Mine also has full DivX support. I don't have the type of remote to make it region free, so I cannot comment on that. I only have two Region 2 disks anyway, so it's not a big deal to me.

Picture quality is very good although I'm not using a very good TV. PAL->NTSC works terrific and so far I have used DVD-R, DVD+R, DVD+RW, CD-R, and CD-RW disks with no troubles.

I mainly bought this for DivX playback and, so far, I have been relatively pleased. I believe the CD-R media I've been using is poor as I have had to reburn most of my movies at a lower speed because I get skipping in almost every movie at about the 35-30 minute mark. Burning at 8X-12X has fixed this in almost every case. I've played Div3X, DivX 4, DivX 5, DivX 6, and XviD files so far. I was very surprised by the playback quality, although many of my files seem to suffer from audio sync problems through the player when they work fine on my PC. However, I understand this player also supports GMC and QPEL, although I've yet to try any files with these options set.

Plenty of audio/video hookups and is quite simple to use. File browser menu is really bad though. Supports only 10 character file names making it very difficult to go through MP3s, MPEG4s, pictures, etc.

Overall, a good player but I'm still testing it out. Paid $10US less than my posted price.

Plays all the VCDs and SVCDs I've thrown at it as well as DVD-R and DVD+R movies (haven't tried andy RWs). Picture quality on a HDTV using the supplied HDMI cable is good and noticeably better compared to watching on a regular TV with a progressive scan DVD player.

A couple minor annoyances:
-Lack of an on screen display for time and the fact that you can't view time remaining at all (not even on the front panel LCD screen that only shows the time ticking) as there is no button (that seems to be standard on most DVD players) to toggle between time playing, remaining, etc.

-FF/Rew options for DVDs are 2x, 4x, 64x, 128x (and 8x if you hold the circle knob on the remote that is used for slow motion playback). 2x and 4 are real slow and 64x is way too fast. It would be good if it had a 16x and/or 32x like other DVD players.

Those are just a couple minor things but overall a quality player that works well for its relatively cheap price when compared to other upconverting DVD players.

The player looks and works good. I like its remote, EZ feature, DVD-A support.

Unfortunately here in Canada (I bought it in Future Shop) it does not support Divx (well it is not marketed as it supports, but in Europe it apperantely does). The region-free crack did not work for me :(, but it plays PAL region-free disks with no problem. The picture is realy black with dark scenes when I upconvert to 1080i. So unfortunatelly I'm going to give it back to Future Shop.

I really like this player, especially the EZ view feature. However, it won't play DVD+RW even though it is supposed to. It has trouble playing a number of my DVD backups. Some play back blocky with periodic freezes. Some don't play at all. Sensitivity to the remote is poor. Does a great job with commercial DVD's though. I am sad it is going to have to go back.

This is truely one incredible DVD player!

Although I have not tried all the supported media (wma, jpg, Divx, etc.) I have thrown every DVD video format(dvd-r/rw, +r/rw, +r DL, superbit, 4:3, 16:9, and 2.25:1) at this player. And it plays them all with expectations beyond what I expected! It even plays the dual layer +R DVD's with little to no noticable pause when switching layers. Although the interal features of this player are quite basic (and that's the only reason I gave it a 9 instead of a 10) It has many other features normally found on a much more expensive unit. One the best is it's HMDI support (w/ an HMDI cable included in the box!) and it's ability to "upconvert" the DVD signal when using the HDMI out to an HDTV w/ HDMI in's. That means absolutely no compression on the video output of this unit when playing in the higher resolutions it supports. This player supports 480i, 480p, 720p, 768p, and 1080i. According to Samsung the newer "HD950" model also supports the new 1080p format. The picture is absolutly perfect. While viewing a paused image of a person's face, I could literally count the pores on their face!! And the audio from the digital out's sounds just like it should...great, supporting all the digital surround sound formats. The unit is very attactive with it's brushed stainless steel front and easy to read display. The player reads the discs very quickly and is built rock solid. Supports coax & optical digital outs, as well as HDMI, component, s-video, & composit out's. The remote is very nice sporting a wide varity of features at the touch of a button and has a jog/shuttle control w/ the ability to forward and reverse scan at 2x,4x,8x,64x, & a whopping 128x scan or step by step 1 frame at a time!!

Another VERY COOL feature of this unit is called "EZ View". How many of you hate watching 4:3 shows on DVD (or TV shows for that matter) with the video stretched? I personally HATE IT!! How many of you bought a high dollar HDTV and get annoyed by small black bars on the top and bottom when watching a movie that has a 2.35:1 aspect ratio?
"EZ View" has totally taken care of this. With movies that have a 2.35:1 aspect ratio (which is slightly wider than 16:9) there is a mode called "Zoom Fit" that will elimiate the small black bars on the top & bottom, and only cropping off a small portion of the left and right sides. It looks great & fills the 16:9 screen completely! This will also help in the long run with potential screen burn, pixel burn, or plasma burn by eliminating those bars. When watching a 4:3 DVD (say a TV show on DVD) you can adjust the picture through this DVD player the same way by using EZ View's "screen fit" mode. It does crop off the top and bottom of the image, however you can still watch the DVD in full progressive scan mode instead of adjusting your TV to "Zoom" in on the image, thus watching it in only 480i. A noticalbe improvement! Apparently Samsung's newer TV's have these same screen adjustments, and I'm sure many of the other Brands of TV manufacturer's do as well. But since I bought my HDTV about 3 years ago (back when they cost 2 to 3x much as thy do now) :( this player was the answer to my dreams!!!!! :)

I highly recommend checking this player out, especially for any of you that have the HDMI or DVI inputs on your HDTV's and can support 720p ,768p, or 1080i. Or to anyone that wants the full spectrum of burned DVD format playback. You will be very impressed. I personally love it for the "EZ View" feature alone!!! (note: if you have the DVI and not the HDMI input on your TV, you will have to buy an HDMI to DVI converter plug, averaging about $50.00 depending where you get it)

Since the introduction of DVDs and players, I've owned approx. 9 - 10 DVD players. Including a Sony ES series DVD player that cost over $1000 back in 1999. This one is my favorite hands down!

Can anyone confirm these, I managed to test XviD in a shop on DVD-R and +R, the +R did not read first time.

As long as it plays DVD -R this would be good, but someone needs to play a full movie - rather than test a disc in a shop.
