| My Samsung HD841 is region 1, bought on USA continental territory. I tried several time to get it free from region limitations, but none of the hacks I experimented using its remote control worked. As I have not an Aiwa or an Universal Philips remote control, I could not try the hacks that use them. So, despite several years passed since I bought this DVD player (at least 5 years), I am still waiting for the miraculous hacker that will help me to get it free. Cheers. |

| Bought this refurb'd through UBID for less than 30 dollars. Had a 90 day manufacturer's warranty and I got an additional year for 6 dollars. For some reason must have been flashed to allow for Divx as it played Divx/XVID right out of the box which was a bonus. Quality is excellent, no skipping and video in Divx and XVID was smooth no dropped frames or stutter. Only tried Maxell DVD-R's and Sony DVD-RW's. Remote has jog dial which for this price is a bonus. Best built DVD player on the market, very solid construction solid aluminum faceplate in silver (wish they made black). Only tried standard component output so can't comment on DVI output. Unit is dead silent during playback unlike my old Philips which would make all sorts of noises when fast forwarding and skip frames. |

I bought the unit because of the features for the price. This unit is the cheapest that is capable of SACD & DVD-Audio playback and is certainly much cheaper than the HD845 currently sold at Best Buy for +/-$120 US.
I currently have it hooked up with normal RCA & Optical due to the lack of a better screen/monitor and amp. The DVD-Audio only plays back thru the 6ch. output and only stereo output is available thru a digital out. DVD Video output (Dolby Digital & DTS) did operate properly thru the optical link though. I did notice that a DVD-R that I had that was encoded in MP2 audio (i didn't do it!) only played back if the audio settings were toggled from PCM/Bitstream. Not a biggie for me yet as most of my DVDR's are AC3/PCM for the time being. BTW, any users of this unit are welcome to message me about how to access the DVD-Audio's VIDEO_TS area. I think i saw it somewhere in the manual but i don't think i could get to it.
Playback varies from DVDR's. I notice that if I try to playback DVDR's (+ or -) that were recorded at 8x are skipping quite a bit and DVDR's that are burned at 2x playback without any problems. At this time, I suspect that my recorder (Liteon SOHW-832S) is the guilty party.
Physically the unit is pleasing to my eyes and the unit operates quietly. The remote control is large and gives the user alot of control over playback and even controls a certain amount of TV's, which is perfect for me as i watch movies before going to sleep. It also has a resume feature if the unit is powered off while playback (DVD only, not VCD/SVCD). A review here stated that it didn't have 2x search. If you use the jog dial, it searches from 2x-32x and even higher without problems. In fact, the Instant Replay/Skip feature is one of the best as you can instantly skip/rewind 10 seconds.

| So far am thrilled with this. It is the cheapest player I've found that has DVD-Audio and SACD although for these formats, the digital connection only transfers stereo (for surround in these formats, you need an amplifier with 5.1 channel inputs to connect from the Samsung's own decoder outputs). I also wanted a player that could play my uk dvds - It converts PAL beautifully (my tv doesn't) and you have two ways of hacking it for multi-region. You can use an Aiwa sound system remote control or as in my case, a palm pilot remote control program to emulate this - see my recent hack. Bought on April 20th 2005 for $99 - southern California. |

I got this player in the hope of playing DVD+R DL. The player can play the first layer with no problems, but the second layer skips badly. The farther to the edge of the second layer you get, the worse the skipping gets until it is unplayable. Another draw back is the remote. It is horribly under powered. You litereally need to point it directly at the player (it becomes very frustrating).
Besides those issues, this player performs well. I used this with a DVI connection. The picture quality is wonderful with the upscaling. The features on the remote are also very useful and the EZ ZOOM feature is easy to use and has all the aspect ratios you could ask for.
If this player was capable of playing DVD+RW DL, I would have kept it. It's a great player for its price if you don't plan on using DVD+RW DL. |

Was looking for a player upgrade using DVI to free up an analog/component input for CableHD. (Other analog is for wonderful Zenith terrestrial HD receiver)
1) I used the setup on the Samsung kick it from composite to DVI output and resolution to the 720p native resolution to my 50” Sony KF50XBR800. With a still photo scene on DVD+R, (the acid test) resolution is poorer and less flicker free than output from old Sony NS315 player using analog/component HD connection.
2) While my DVD+Rs that were mastered 4:3 (in Premiere 6.5 and DVDImpression Pro) and showed successfully on several other DVD players with black bars on the side, none of the three format choices of the Samsung would prevent it from stretching the material to the full width of my 16:9 Sony KF50-XBR800. (format choices were 4:3 letterbox, 4:3 pan&scan, and 16:9).
3) The aforementioned DVD had several chapter marks that all other DVD players recognized but the Samsung remote would not skip forward when either the “index-next” or the “page-next” buttons were pressed.
Three other shortcomings that would not have been lethal were:
4) The DVD setup menu could only be accessed when the DVD was stopped, preventing the kind or resizing on the fly we are all used to.
5) The Display output choices had a very poorly designed interface. After you selected a different output, there came up with a box that required arrowing left and entering to accept the choice. The problem is that just before that your screen would go black and you would have to take your screen’s remote and find the new input. By then the dialog box would usually have timed out. I only caught it once by chance when switching quickly.
6) Again we have a DVD player that lacks a 2X speed fast forward, a feature that was common good players 3 years ago.
Needless to say I've returned it. |

| I can confirm beyond a doubt that this player ***does not*** read DVD+R DL discs. Failed miserably on several Verbatim (best quality) DVD+R DL discs. These same discs play better in my old Philips DVD793C than they did in this player. The DVI output is nice, but that's about the only thing this player has going for it. |

picked up this player for my 60" LCD projection HDTV.
I've previously only owned pioneer players, as
they will play just about anything round that
you can shove in there.
this samsung does quite well. The upconverting to
720p looks nice, not a huge difference from 480p
but better.
it plays my collection of Ritek G04 and G03 DVD-R's
flawlessly. I tested about a dozen.
it plays SVCD and VCD flawlessly as well. I've tried
Fuji CD-R's and Maxell CD-R's (tayo's and riteks are
the manuf). Tested about 10 discs/movies in both
formats.
tons of outputs as well - DVI, Svideo, component,
RBG, coax DTS, optical, etc.
It also comes with a DVI cable. For $199 bucks it's
hard to beat.
For me the DVD-R playback and the SVCD/VCD was key.

| Great DVD player! I like the DVI output on my 34" Sony TV, especially in 1080i. Shows all the detail that is available on your DVD without excess noise-Excellent! Unfortunately I haven't tested out all the different medias on this unit yet. I ahve had alot of DVD players over the years and this is probably one of the best! |
