1. I'm not sure why there are so many comments about SVCD/VCD's not playing, because I can play ALL of my VCD/SVCD's. However, perhaps the difference is that all of my movies are store purchased or commercial quality CDs (ie. silver colored), not copied or burned onto a CDR/CDRW. I admit, I haven't tried to "backup" one of my VCD's onto a CDR (ie. blue colored), so I cannot say whether that will work, but the original VCD's seem to play just fine. I have not had problems playing DVD-RW's burned as DVD movies. I think some of the people having problems with pixelation near the end of the movie almost certainly are dealing with poor quality media, not a defective player.
2. It's a great high quality and reliable progressive scan DVD player, with the ability to hold up to 5 discs for sequential playback. It's got progressive scan, component output, as well as the usual SVHS/composite outputs. It has both optical and coax digital sound output. The picture and sound output are top notch. I've used mine for over a year. It's quiet, reliable, and of excellent build quality. It LOOKS expensive, not like those cheapo DVD players from China.
3. The only negative is that it cannot play ISO/MPEG files directly, although this seems to be common to more expensive brands (eg. Sony, Panasonic, etc). It's not advertised as being able to do this, but a lot of the "cheapo" DVD players can read MPEG files directly off an ISO disc.

It was a great disappointment that it does not play any VCD.
DVD+RW: it plays (Memorex) DVD+RW very badly - the display gets more and more pixelated towards the end of the movie and the last few chapters are unplayable - freezes and/or returns to the menu.
I tried one DVD+R - it played fine, i'm going to copy my dvd+rw to dvd+r and try if it is any better.
Tried to split a dvd-9 into two dvds using DVD FAB - does not play at all.
DVD-5 copy played fine.
The disks are in reverse order (5-1)!! and it does not move from one disk to the next automatically.
Remote is okay - not universal, no volume control.

| I was able to play Delerious VCD fine on this player and all my SVCDS as well. I don't get any errors/pixelation showing up in this player (unlike the Xbox Thompson dvd-drive). I tried many different CDR brands and all have worked so far (including Sony, Maxell, Memorex, Gigastore, Cursor, Verbatim, Mitsui, Mitsumi, Kodak, Ultra-Speed and TDK). In terms of DVD media I've successfully used Ritek G04, Prodisc S03, Verbatim Datalife & DatalifePlus, CMC OEM, Memorex, Princo and Ricoh. Not a bad player as all once you can get around its little annoyances like the backwards loading and tricky SVCD FFWD. |

| I bought this player for $74.03 USD, bought it from the store I work at. It plays all the CDR and CDRW media that I burn to without any problems. Although, I was bummed to find out that it couldn't play VCDs (I have BIG collection of VCD movies). Anyway I figured a trick around to making it play VCDs, so I'm happy that it plays 'em now. Also, I like that it plays WMA files as all my music is in that format. Overall it's a great product. This is actually my third DVD play, I had a Toshiba, then a JBL DVD600 (the one that came with the Cinema ProPack 600 that I purchase), and now this Samsung 5 disc changer DVD player. |

Had it less than a day but seems excellent. Went through 3 other 5 disc changers before I found this one. Bought it at WalMart[Canada]$149.99. Plays VCD, SVCD, CD-RW regular and HighSpeed [12x].MP3's @ 256 perfectly. Good menu although 8.3 format, mp3's can be played random or programmed. Can select mp3 files directly by punching in number on remote. No problem playing movies created with DVD2SVCD, 8x forward and reverse speed with SVCD. Can't find a thing wrong with it so far. Haven't tested to see if it will play 2 and 3 disk SVCD movies in sequence. Here are the media I've tested it with so far:
Verbatim DataLifePlus 48x 80 min CDR [SVCD movie]
Samsung CDR 74 min [mp3 will play at 8x speed]
Prime 40x 80 min CDR [mp3]
Memorex 80 min HS 4-12 CD-RW [VCD movie played fine but pushing ffw brought disc back to beginning instead, not really a problem as i almost never record VCD's unless I've downloaded in that format fron Internet]
Memorex CD-RW 4x speed SVCD from MPEG2
TDK CD-R 74 min regular CD Audio
Sony CD-RW 74 min 4x speed [played VCD converted from Avi no problem]
Optimum 80 min 48x SVCD [movie played perfectly]
Took back Toshiba SD-2815 yesterday after finding it would play back nothing but standard DVD's. manual says it will play VCD etc, but would not recognize any VCD, SVCD, CD-RW mp3 and so on.
Hope to hear feedback as to items I have not tested.

Got it $49.99 from Bloomingdale on top of $200 purchase. Plays all my burned SVCDs. However does not play any VCD, CDR or official releases.
I have also encountered problem with some SVCD that will only start playing from 30 minutes mark. After close inspection these SVCDs were burnt incorrectly (not using the cue sheet).
Too bad SVCD subtitle does not work. Next time will try CVD subtitle.
All in all, good all-around player, especially if you have large SVCD collection. |

SVCD Playback is superb. Much bettern than my JVC 2300BK. Movies that skipped horribly on that player work like a charm on this one

It would not play VCD which had worked in my older Samsung DVD-M301. (Did not recognize VCD disks)
It did play DVD+-R/W and SVCD. The SVCD has no fast search, which sucks.

Plays DVD+R, DVD+RW both as is, and with booktype changed to DVD-ROM.
Plays cheap Memorex DVD's no problem.
It even played some old VCD's that I had lying around, perfectly!
My friend's Toshiba won't play as many discs as this one.
Excellent player. |

Samsung is one of a tiny handful of players that consistantly play DVD-R disks regardless of the tool that recorded them. I took 8 of my most difficult disks to play to every major chain store and tested walls and walls of DVDs single and changer versions. Samsung, Apex and certain Sharp players (not all) were among the only brands that could really play everything. Panasonic, Sony, Toshiba, Denon, Yamaha, Mitsubishi. It almost seemed that the more prestigious or well known the brand, the less likely they were able to play DVD-R... particularly those made with DVD XCopy standard version. DVD Express were very easy to play on most brands. Panasonics I noticed had a tendency on some models to stutter between chapter stops. Very irritating.
This Samsung is also much more logical in the way it handles discs than some of the other brands. If you put a disc into slot three it spins back to play that disc. Not so with some of the other brands. The next disk play also works better than other brands. Samsung will skip dead slots to find the next disk. Some other brands won't. This is beneficial for speeding up the awkward gap when watching movies split in two by DVD recording programs. Sadly there is no sequetial play for DVDs. Only music DVDs. I originally returned this unit to the store for that reason but later regretted it when I discovered nobody has a changer with DVD sequential play! This is a much needed and wanted feature for people buying a machine that can play split backups.
If you are wanting a changer that is super compatible with DVD backups of all sorts, you would have difficulty finding better than a Samsung unit. Apex recently started doing a changer I didn't have a chance to test, but I would be willing to bet it would also be super compatible.
I don't have any interest in SVCDs so I did not test this media format. |

Man this player is a piece of garbage. It does play everything I throw at it, but that's not the point.
First off, fast-forwarding through an SVCD is as slow as hell. Goes at forward at about 15 or 20 seconds at a time. Second, when you do forward a movie, and try to resume, it skips a few chapters back, plain stops, or just plays the movie from the very beginning. Third, the damn disc carousel revolves backwords (5-4-3-2-1) when you are insterting discs... so you have to put your discs in reverse order. Very annoying.
This unit is going straight back to Best Buy.

| This thing is a real turd. The first thing I noticed was that the power cable was about a foot shorter than all the rest of my equipment. I doesn't play VCD's at all. It does play SVCD's. During SVCD playback, I could fastfwd, but then was unable to get it to play from that point in the movie. It would always start over. There's no way to go directly to a certain disk. Using disk skip moves to the next disc, loads the disc, then starts playing, then you can hit disc skip. It's going back, as soon as I can unplug it. |

| Just got the player today, and so far very happy. Picture and sound quality are a definite improvment over my trustworthy old Apex 600a. Vcd unfortunatly does not work but everything else is plays fine. SVCDs are called CVDs by the player, dunno if that means it will play CVDs(don't have any to try). I have tested several cdr media types all work great. Also I have tested 4 dvd-r media types, all but one worked great and the one that did not is el cheapo that doesn't work in Sony, GE, Apex, or Samsung, or for that matter most older dvd-rom drives. I look forward to trying other disk types that I know my apex did not handle, wmv(supposed to work), mpeg iso, divx, dvd-svcd, dvd-mp3, and others. Gotta get some rewritable dvds and cds first. Other caveats are that the remote is a little cheap and no long file names or id3 tags on mp3, but the menu is simple and works. The three small problems, no vcd, mp3 limitations, and remote add up to give it a 9/10 for me and a 7-8/10 for those who like the mp3s. |
