My first one skipped so bad after a year so I went back to the store and bought another one and switched them and took the bad one back. Sometimes I have trouble with this but seems to be rare now. Sometimes plays dvd-r and dvd-r dl. Can't figure out why. I use the same dvd's and the same program to burn them.

Good though rather elderly player that can be made multiregion using the remote.

Have access to 2 players. One only plays DVD-R (Datasafe RITEKG04) while the other only DVD+R (TDK, Maxell and Ricoh which all have code RICOHJPNR01).

Yes , it can read DVD+R. I make a video with MySonic and Sony DRU-510 with a TDK DVD+R disk and it is perfect on my player with animated menu also. Quality of picture is fabulous.

I have tried with DVD+RW TDK and VERBATIM but they don't succeed.

All my tries with different CD-R and CD-RW have never succeeded.

Just bought a "clearance" '709 from Richer Sounds and for it's age is pretty fantastic! Macrovision is switched off via a hack so ideal for connecting to a DVD recorder or VCR. The picture is pretty good for it's age too...and at the ridiculous price of £40 I just couldn't go wrong with it. Won't play hardly any recorded media but is a brilliant second machine or for the use of copying to a DVD-R. Could only get a Verbatim DVD+R disc to work...wouldn't take any of my DVD-R's although I've used the machine to help create them!

A classic model!

DVD-R works, but only when burned as UDF/ISO. Burned as UDF, they don't play (I'm using Nero 6).
My first tries with DVD-RW failed, but I haven't tested enough brands to be sure it never plays.
I haven't seen problems with CD-RW, but only half of the CD-R works.

I would like to confirm that Andy316 comments reported on August 18th 2002 are correct.

Phillips CD-RW do infact work with this player.

Once a VCD file has been created using Nero, the player will access the disc and a message will keep flashing in the window called 'Code94'.

Eventually this will clear and the Menu 1.1 message will appear on the T.V.

Press play and this message 'Code94' will flash up again, be patient and the disc will eventually play.

For 100% disc playing results, Vivastar discs are the best.

Nick

Comments:
The 709 is, as other comments confirm, about as picky as they get. It runs hot, too - give it room to let it breathe otherwise it'll skip even on retail DVDs after a couple of hours.

I don't have a DVD burner yet, only a good CD burner (Lite-On LTR-40125S ZS0K) so can't comment on DVD recordable results, but I have done some solid tests on CD compatibility. The laser is underpowered (and given the existing heat issues, raising the voltage would be perilous). You need a disc with extraordinarily high reflectivity to get this thing to read it - CD-RWs are a non-starter, and so are the vast majority of CD-Rs regardless of dye type (even blue azo, silver and black/red).

I lost count of how many discs I tried. TDK azo type 0, Prodisc type 7, Maxell (really Prodisc type 1, didn't know they did a type 1), Ritek, Ricoh, my last imation, tx 99 minute (worth a try) and even out of desparation some CMC Magnetics (aka the "Coaster Making Cartel") junk. Results varied, but only between "Please insert a CD" and "Cannot play this disc, check if it is clean".

So I brought out the last resort. Two words: Taiyo Yuden. (When you absolutely, positively got to be read by every fussy drive in the room - accept no substitute.)

Specifically, this pile of 48x 80-minute unbranded silver top/blue-green dye (dye type 1 - it's not the vibrant blue of azo, more a dark cyan colour - cyanine? 48x rated cyanine?!) CD-R discs manufactured by the creators of the CD-R themselves, Taiyo Yuden.

Great discs, best CD-R purchase I have ever made, thoroughly recommended to those who never want to burn (or try to read) a coaster again. A friend pointed me towards an online source - www.blankdiscshop.co.uk - where I could buy them online, 100 at a time, shrinkwrapped, delivered in the UK two days later. They're not quite so cheap, but I'm happy...

...because lo and behold, the TYs work consistently, even if I burn at CAV 40x (better stick to CAV 24x though, as my drive apparently "prefers" that).

It still takes eight or so seconds to recognise the disc, but burn a VCD, or an SVCD that hasn't been authored with Nero (important) on one of these Taiyo Yuden discs, and it will, at least according to my tests, play every time unless the actual spec is a bit off (in which case, tap play three times or forward/back - bingo, problem solved).

Oddly, burn an audio CD with the exact same TY media, and it will always reject it. Burned VCD and SVCD only, it seems, and never burned audio CDs - odd, I thought. Maybe it checks the ATIP? All pressed silver VCDs appear to work. (I don't have any silver SVCDs, but they probably work too.)

Disregarding its issues with media it's a pretty good (albeit old-ish) player - good quality, although older firmware issues had problems with certain DVDs (The Matrix being an infamous one). RCE-proof auto-region/macrovision off, with a handset code. Better than a kick in the teeth - as long as you let it breathe, and use good CD-Rs!

main issue is weak laser...TDK have worked flawlessly for me when burned at moderate speeds like previous person said about 8x and below...I have tested just about every CD-R and CDRW under the sun and only ones to play have been TDK and Fujifilm (fujifilm skipped but probably cuz it was burned fast and it was SVCD)

it seems that any blue-bottomed cd WILL play and especially well if the the top side of the CD isn't visible from the bottom (ex: puttin cd label side to a weak light and if u can see label through cd side...it is too transparent....tdk media is pretty opaque which is probably y it works the best imo)

For all the people in the UK how can no longer get Princo CDRs for burning VCD/SVCDs - get Paradox 80 min CDRs. To my amazement the player I bought couple of years ago played DVD+R (DATAWRITE) data safe ones recorded on Philips DVDR880 but didn't played Philips DVD+RW discs. I have the EPROM version 3.23. Does any one know that if I update it to the latest version, it will play DVD+RW and will I still be able to hack it with the remote and disable the macrovision.

I was very frustrated with this player until I got an upgraded eprom chip from http://www.709firmware.fsnet.co.uk/
you can either send him your origional chip or purchase a new one. I live in the US and a new chip was $28.05 including shipping. This guys name is Mike Gordon and he won't rip you off. I received my chip in a little over a week. He also answers emails promptly.
I tested DVD-R, DVD+RW, SVCD burned on TDK rewritable.
They work fine. Previously the only thing that would play on this player was origional DVD'S. It wouldn't even play many origional audio CD'S.
If you happen to own an eprom programmer capable of programming a 40 pin chip you can download the firmware and software free and do it yourself.
Do the math: chip=28.05 cheapest Apex player=56.00
