I am posting this report primarily in regards to being able to play high definition content off regular DVD recordable disks.
This format may be called as BD9 or BD5 or AVCREC, whatever. These names seem to not be directly applicable to what users are really doing, because BD9 describes manufactured pressed disks, not burned ones. BD5 seems to be a non-standard name created by someone who thought that "9" in "BD9" describes disk capacity. AVCREC requires AVC encoding and certain disk structure, so it does not work either.
Anyway, here is what works for me, this is for reader to decide what it is called.
---
First of all, in firmware version 2.3 (March 14, 2008) Samsung removed this capability, so stay away from this firmware. I only hope that this feature will be put back in next releases. Versions 2.1 and 2.2 work for me, I suggest using 2.2. Samsung does not provide access to older versions, so you need to look around.
#1 Raw AVCHD file from Canon HG10 camcorder, max bitrate 15Mbps, frame size 1440x1080, burned onto DVD-R disk with UDF 2.50 filesystem --> plays well.
#2 Same as #1, burned onto DVD+R --> plays well.
#3 AVCHD file from #1, burned as content file of a full-blown Blu-ray disk (BDMV and CERTIFICATE directories) on DVD-R --> plays, but stutters.
#4 AVCHD file from Sony SR11 camcorder, max bitrate 17Mbps, frame size 1920x1080, burned onto DVD-R disk with UDF 2.50 filesystem --> does not play, players displays message "this disk cannot be played".
#5 Blu-ray structure (BDMV and CERTIFICATE directories) on a DVD-R disk with high definition MPEG-2 file @ 25Mbps, 1440x1080 --> plays, but stutters.
#6 Same as #5 but re-encoded to 17Mbps --> plays well. |
