CVD? $125 N/A 9 of 10 Comments: I have owned this Sampo for one year and have not had a single problem with it to date. Picture and sound quality are crisp and clear. Inexpensive and very easy to convert to all regions.

CVD? $100 N/A 8 of 10 JPG/JPEG DivX MPEGISO Comments: DVD+RW (standard DVD format) works fine (HP, Ritek, Verbatim, 2.4x). DVD+R (standard DVD format) works fine, just remember to close the session (Fuji, Ritek, Verbatim, Maxell, Memorex, 2.4x). Check vcdhelp forums for more info. DVD+R/RWs tested were authored with ReelDVD or Scenarist and burned as raw disc images using Nero or Instant CD/DVD. DVD+R burned in Nero using UDF only(1.02) mode with constructed .vobs worked fine as well. DVD+R burned in DVD-UDF/ISO mode (1.04?) in Nero did not work. Mini-DVD on CD-R/CD-RW was recognized and played as a regular DVD. SVCD/VCD on DVD works in ISO mode - burned the .mpg files onto a regular DVD and then can select (or even program as tracks) the files for playing from the directory menu that appears when disc is inserted. Did not test for compatibility with non-compliant VCD/SVCD mpeg files, however. Strange artifacts/blocking using RW media (if tested as working fine in other players) may indicate a defective loader, which was present in a few of the 631cfs. Sampo is aware of the issue and will provide a replacement free of charge.

MP3 VBR WMA CVD $150 N/A 10 of 10 miniDVD/cDVD JPG/JPEG MP3 long filename MPEGISO Comments: After going through 2 Apex players (they don't seem to last too long, do they?) I'm glad I spent a little extra money on this one - it's the best by far! The first thing you'll notice is the build quality seems much better than your average cheap, hackable DVD player. It's heavier than an Apex and feels more solid. It also looks nice! Onto the good stuff - it plays everything I can give it. VCD, XVCD, SVCD, XSVCD (up to about 4500, after that it began stuttering). Last night I burned my first mini DVD (at 6000) and it played that too! It also plays MPG files with no need to encode them as VCDs. Just download, burn and play! MP3 playback is good, PLUS it displays long filenames - I hate when the Apex players chop off everything after the first 7 digits. But - BEST OF ALL - The compact flash slot! At first I wasn't sure what I would use it for - sure, it's nice that it can play files off a card with no need to burn - but why bother? CDs are cheap. But then I realized - MY ONE MINUTE TESTS! How many times have you wasted tons of CDs burning 1 minute encoding tests, over and over? Well, no more! Just encode the test, copy it to a CF card and pop it in the player to see how it looks. No writing VCD/SVCD format and burning a CD just for a quick test. It has saved me A LOT of time and made the trial and error process MUCH faster. The CF slot is a godsend for people who like to encode their own discs. This player also displays JPGs (it can rotate, flip and zoom in on images with the remote) and, of course, it is VERY easy to hack it region free (it also plays PAL and NTSC). What can I say? It really does it all and I'm very happy with it. Worth the extra $50 over an Apex!

Works best with SVCD's Made via DVD2SVCD however I have had very few problems as it will play just about any thing you put in it. Even just putting mpg files on to a CDR will play. Was dissapointed when DVD+RW didn't work however DVD+R from Memorex worked fine haven't had one fail yet did not use the special compatability mode. VCD SVCD DVD menues work great however some minor problems with SVCD... No problems at all if you make them with VCDEASY or DVD2SVCD. Have not tried DVD-R/RW as I do not have one of these burners. Lots of cool things you can do with this player. Many can be found at www.area450.com.

CVD? $247 N/A 8 of 10 miniDVD/cDVD Comments: This unit plays everything including DVD, DVD-R, DVD-RW, CD, CD-R, CD-RW, MP3, raw jpg, mpeg1 and mpeg2 files on both CDs and Compact Flash cards! Mini DVD has been tested for 9800 kbps!!! Menus on both DVD and VCD are not as quick or responsive as the DVE-611, but still works just as good as most other name brand players. VCD menu lacks return button. But the Stop button acts as a Return. Plays DVD-Rs that other players hitch on (ie-DVE-611.)

CVD? $230 N/A 8 of 10 miniDVD/cDVD Comments: Plays everything well, including cvd and sefy's templates, and some other funky experiments I've done on my own. Seems to like cd-r better than cd-rw, but that could be my burner. Audio quality is great. Video quality seems great to me, but this is the only player I won, so I have little to compare it to.
