Though others here have been able to play DVD+RW or DVD+R media, I only get "no disc" when I try. (tried both with media I burnt, and with stuff a friend burnt).

I've both the oldest and newest firmware listed on the Area450 site.

Mine is serial number 010805587. I wonder if mine is an older player with perhaps an older drive?

Mine also has this bug: when playing a wide-screen PAL disc (converting to NTSC), overlays (subtitles, menu pointers) stop working.

Got mine brand new on Ebay for $60, including shipping. Not a bad little player, CREGIN worked flawlessly.

Discs do tend to skip on this player. I have tried 4 different regions, and the skips tend to be random. Some skips do tend to be long (30-second freeze-frame, then disc resumes at the current time), while others are mere blips on the windscreen. Annoying, nonetheless.

MP3: plays any bitrate as long as frequency is 32kHz or greater. 22kHz or lower, and the sound is totally garbled. For OTR enthusiasts, only use for high-quality files, or dust off that copy of CoolEdit and start making custom bitrate files.
Does NOT support WMA or MP3PRO formats.

NTSC/PAL converter is very high quality, although not the best I have seen so far. But for the price, is better than I expected. VCD/SVCD was flawless, using a multitude of brands (Maxell, Fuji, Sony, Memorex - coloured, plain, and all-black).

So, why the low rating? The DVD loader in this playe is crap. Loader died after 6 months of use (granted, I use mine more than most people on the planet). It can be replaced, but looks like crap once done.

I've tested the DVD+R capability, it played my Maxell DVD+R flawlessly. I used Nero to burn in DVD-ROM UDF 1.02 Format. Worked also with my Maxell DVD+RW discs.

One problem with this player is sometimes regular DVD's will hic-cup or freeze, even if there are no scratches on the disc. Most play flawlessly but every now and then it comes across a disc it doesn't like, two that I can remember off the top of my head are "Swingers" and "How High". It also doesn't seem to like some CD-RW's, mainly CompUSA CD-RW's but those are total garbage anyway, but sometimes it has a problem with Memorex CD-RW's also.

Overall this is a great bang for the buck. One of the most feature rich players I've seen for very little $$.

This Player is the best. PLAYS EVERYTHING!!! The only reason I did not rated it by 10 is because it skips DVDs some times. But VCDs AND SVCDs play with no problem. MP3s play grate. I am a soccer fan and All Region Hack helped me to watch European DVDs with soccer games in PAL. Over all this is a good player for the money.

I am Steve G. I make girls scratch there punani!!!

Views just about everything I threw at it after using the simple CREGIN hack. Plays computer burned VCDs just fine using CDRs and CDRWs, even before the hack.

Plays my region 2 and 3 DVDs with no problems.

I bought my unit for only $89, actually, it was such a good deal, I bought two!

It gets a 9 because sometimes I get slowdowns and brief pauses during playback. It might be because the VCR is on top of it....

I purchased my 611 for about 300. It plays all that I have given it. It does play VCD and homemade VCD's crappy. I have just one PAL VCD that plays superb! Also plays SVCD's very well! No more making paltry VCD's. My 611 is prone to stutters and frezzes ocasionaly from my DVD's usually region 1 discs.
I do want to try DVD-R & RW's soon...
Plays my region 2 & 3 discs without a hitch. MP3 cd are also no problem.

Works well esp. with the region free feature. When I first bought it I had to select the region. For some reason now it picks the right region on its own. Hey as long as it works. Works well with the DVD-Rs I record on my Panasonic DMR-E20 after they have been finialized. The only annoying thing is the text (play, pause, ffwd, etc.) shows up on the screen each time you use a particular function. It's only on screen for a couple of seconds but when I'm doing a DVD recording from another DVD, I would rather the text not be there no matter how long.

I am happy with it, it has played all what I put.
The region is selectable by the remote control before you play a DVD, it is not automatic, new DVDs notice that, and does not work.
Macrovision is disable, you can copy a DVD to a VHS tape.
Plays Pal on NTSC.
I got it by mail from www.220-electronics.com, the will give you more info about hacked players.
You can get it for less $, but w/o the modifications.

My Sampo DVE-611 plays all the CD-R and CD-RW disks I've tested, if burned with the "right" settings. VCDs are not a problem. When making SVCDs I had to first make an AVI file at 480x480 (using Indeo 4.3 codec), then convert it to SVCD at 480x480 with TMPGEnc, selecting "upper field first". (Lower field first made very jerky blocky video). I have used TMPGEnc to encode the SVCD mpeg2 files most successfully--available at www.tmpgenc.com. I haven't had much luck with quality using bbmpg or Ligos.

Lately I've begun experimenting with mini-dvds--higher quality at 720x480. First I make an AVI file at 720x480 (I use Adobe Premiere 6.0 and Pinnacle DV500). Then I use TMPGEnc to encode the AVI file to an mpeg2 DVD file, but change the DVD settings to 3000kbps. I then open my DVD authoring software (Pinnacle Impression) and import the new mpeg2 file and make a "DVD Image" folder on my hard drive. Then I change the *.img file extension to *.cif and burn the contents of the DVDImage folder to a cd. This is the highest quality video I've been able to get my Sampo DVE-611 to accept on a CD, but only makes videos about 10 minutes long. I'm pleased so far with my 611! Still working on it!

My old Sony would not play Region 0 DVDs, SVCDs, miniDVDs, CD-Rs, etc.

Then I got a modified Sampo 611 (region free).

Played my Star Wars VCDs, region 0, 1, and 2 (PAL) DVDs.

Burned a miniDVD with Ulead MovieStudio on a CD-R and it worked great.

Played SVCDs on CD-Rs like a charm.

I.E: Will play anything. Highly recommended.

Very easy to convert to Region-Free.
Only rate a 9, because most MP3 files has a long filename and this unit's MP3 filename display is limited to 8 characters, and it's very hard to figure out what song you should choose. Other than this, this a very nice machine. Could be a 10 easily.

Works with all sorts of CD/R media.
DO NOT USE Sonic DvdIt: bad jitters.
Use Ulead MovieFactory instead: excellent results.
Easy to make region-free (takes 5 minutes).
Converts PAL to NTSC and NTSC to PAL excellently.
Low price! (Do not pay more than $125. Gets offered for upto $350 when already region free. Always buy cheap region 1 only device and apply easy region free procedure yourself.)
