Have to take back my previous comment re audio out of sync cured by menu. aFraid not, quite a few movies played are out of sync. however if you press pause and immediately press play say after 1 second, it does cure this on occasions.
Sorry for misguiding some of you guys. But. well at least ive updated my comments.
Still a great player though but im taking 2 marks off for the out of sync problem.

Well, I bought it because my other ronin player started freezing on the latest match of disks I bought. (datawrite printable 8x CMC MAG AE1 disks) if i record the disks at 8x then the player blocks up, picture freezes and generally throws a fit. I'm going to try it with some riteks in the next day or so to see if it is just the disks. If i burn them at 4x it seems to be ok.
dvd+rw disks are fine in it.
The wife doesn't like the lack of display on the front panel and the trak looks extremely cheap, almost like a budget cd rom drive. Saying that, for 20 quid I really am not that bothered although my sony player is fine with anything i throw into it, unlike my nakamichi with wont play anything except commercial disks. |

Well it best live up to the expectations you lot say it has. My Toshiba is crap paid £450 for the home cinema and jumps every disc i have now and the SCART socket does not work and all just after the manufacturers warranty by 3 days, GREAT. So i bought the RONIN on a special offer price brand new for £17 saving me 33% off retail price, one day only offer, so it better play my discs as well as you guys say. If so i will let you all know and i will be buying more if it is above expectations.
Cheers. |

My model is the Ronin 215 [2004 version] with no other prefix. Bought from W.H.Smith of all places as I was sick and tired of my Pioneer 350s and Yamada 3320 skipping, freezing and generally spitting their dummies out at my dvd copies. I can quite honestly say this is the mutts nuts! Ive threw everything at it that my other players refused to entertain and it played flawlessly. The main discs i had a problem with were DATAWRITE 4X DVD-R [V3], they were horrible if not very cheap to buy. On this player I can even burn @8x times on these discs without even a hiccup.Other problems you generally find with some dvd players are that after a few hours or days even of the player being constantly left on, the discs start to skip freeze etc. But this one ive had on for 2 weeks with no problems at all!!!!!!!!!! For £30 youd be absolutely bonkers not to buy it. Looked at the hacks for this player, for flawless multi region operation go to the link shown on the hack page and look at the hack for the 2004 version and follow the instruction. Mine was region 2 now multiregion [really easy]. In summary if your looking for a player that will play all your backups [cough, cough] then if you dont buy this player you should be locked in a mental hospital for throwing your harded earned money away!!! BTW there was a person further up suggested that the audio was out of sync, well there a menu that allows adjustment, i moved it to minus 2 and hey presto flawless syncronisation.
You will only have yourself to blame if you buy other cheap rubbish.
Have fun

Shame, this player copes with many formats etc. and gives reasonable sound/video quality for the price, but as I expanded my DVD collection, on many purchased DVDs (and I am talking DVDs from normal film distributors), there's quite a bad sync problem between the audio and video. Sometimes it's just the extras, which is forgivable, but a few of the main features are also affected and was absolutely maddening in the end so it had to go back to the shop.
Also, on my Monty Python audio CDs, the sound cuts out halfway through some of the tracks, and the drive mechabnism makes a hell of a racket on some DVD titles (you can feel it shaking!). Interestingly there are very similar problems to the Image 2290 (in fact, the OSD of the Ronin is quite similar to that of the Image w.r.t. font/layout, implying the two units might have similar underlying circuitry).
I can only recommend these units to someone nostalgic about those badly-dubbed foreign movies of yesteryear... |

This little player was bought as Dabsvalue brand for £40. I have had it for over 8 months and although the first one I had had a faulty drawer, the second one has been superb. Also my neighbour bought 2 and another neighbour bought another 2. My daughter uses it as I got it for her. It is on for over 10 hours a day on average and it does not get stressed. I play DVD+RW, _RW, _R and +R as bulkpaq, Packard Bell and Datawrite Yellow with ritek dye. It is the only player that supports all formats and I use it to test DVDs I've burned. i have a £300 Aiwa that plays less than this little beauty. I play JPEG, VCD, SVCD and combinations as well. I have a VCD with an MPEG video file and 13 pictures on it. It handles it no problems. It is sleek and compact and easily transportible. It has a built in 2.1 dolby digital decoder, all you need are speakers for the mini theatre ability. I would reccommend this even as a main player. It is robust and has stood up to hundreds of hours of use without complaint. The picture is sharp, there is a screensaver as well if the player is idle and then it turns itself off.
The controls are easy to use and I uprgraded it to multi region from the handset following the hacks listed here. It worked first time and I am really pleased about it.
I would reccommend this player. |

Has problems playing SVCD mpegs burnt as ISO. It will play them but there is a small amount of coruption every 10 - 20 second. SVCD's authored as DVD's (audio upped to 48KHz & header patched) plays with no problem.
Fine with Bulkpaq X4 orange DVD-R (If the disks are ok) also All DVD-R's with the ritek X4 dye seemed fine.
Good for the price. |

| Tried with 'Bulkpaq' and 'Ice' (Princo) DVD-R and Datawrite 1x DVD-RW (Princo)from a pioneer 105 with no probs. Plays mp3 cd and dvd, with nice on-screen folder/track selection. Easy region free from handset, but no macro removal at the moment. Plays 'raw' vid files from disc with on-screen selection, as well as vcd-dvd. Sound and picture superb. A truely great, versatile and compact (check out dimensions)player, £40 well spent. |
