I have a ReocA5 which will not playback Packard Bell DVD+RW disks when burnt on Nero 5.5.10.4, but are OK on the PC.

Comments:
Player seems a good all round contender. Svcd audio sync can go off when you skip search or pause a few times but apart from that I've had no problems. Multi region and macrovision hack works 100% ok. Just download it and burn it to a cd for each hack and pop it in......Job Done!!!!

Great Player for a great price!

The Reoc 5.1 speaker system that goes with the player. I bought it from Safeways for £149.99 (Complete package. DVD&5.1)Excellent performance!

My experiences:

Generally this machine plays all disc formats and disc brands. There is a known issue with the Reoc A5 where a small proportion of machines will freeze at the transition point in dual layer DVD's. My first machine did this and the only cure is a replacement machine.

VCD/SVCD/miniDVD has always worked for me with any brand of CDR/CD-RW I have tried.

With SVCD only CVD type subtitles will work.

XSVCD OK at 4000kb/s but any higher gave choppy audio.
miniDVD worked with bitrates even as high as 8000kb/s.

No problems with DVD-R or DVD+R with various brands. I've tried CBR and VBR and with bitrates as high as 8000kb/s. Playback is perfect.

So far both DVD-RW and DVD+RW play but skip quite a lot. Good enough for testing before burning to DVD+/-R though.

Comments:
Great budget price DVD Player with excellent features for the money. I only paid £89.99 from Safeway in the UK. This was a special offer price but the week after I bought the player it went back to £139.99. Still worth the asking price though. Picture quality and sound is excellent, as is the build quality. The silver casing feels very smooth and rounded and doesn't look tacky unlike a lot of cheap players. MP3 playback is impressive, great sound and seemed to play every disc I threw at it - even 10p undbranded media. Menu system for navigating MP3's is a bit poor but ok. File names are cut short making it difficult to understand the titles, especially tracks labelled with sequential numbers (cut off at the end!.. why??!).

DVD regional coding can be hacked by burning a CD-R or CD-RW with a code number in a text file. Macrovision removal requires an unofficial firmware update but I haven't tried it out as I don't tape to VHS anyway.

I create a lot of DVD-R video discs and burn programmes captured in MPEG2 from Satellite. Using Dazzle's DVD Creator software all my discs play fine in the Reoc A5. The REOC accepts most DVD-R discs without problem. It doesn't seem to like crappy Bulkpac media (the ones with the purple top labelled Generation 3r2). I would advise everyone to stop away from those anyway as nothing hardly plays them!! Also watch out for early princo media as they are suspect too. All new DVD discs are made to higher quality now. Any other DVD-R discs seem to work fine. SVCD and VCD play back is smooth and generally without problems even on scratched discs. The remote control supplied is clear, well laid out and isn't ugly unlike a lot of them!

Setting up dolby digital decoding was very easy. The menu is pretty logical and providing you have the right amplifier to handle to 6 channels of sound then you'll experience top quality audio, if a little quiet/less powerful) compared to more expensive models such as Sony but for the money you'll be hard pushed to beat it!!
