I bought one of these units from Best Buy. It's my first DVD player and I intend on using it in sales presentations.

Although I have found it quite handy, I have some SERIOUS problems. It took me 3 units (2 exchanges) to get a working unit. In 3x4 mode the picture looks good. In widescreen, there is a problem with pixelation -- jaggies are never something I want to see when watching a TV show broadcast in widescreen.

The first unit had a problem with overheating, the 2nd unit would not switch to 3x4 video and the 3rd has the lower quality display in widescreen. I suspect this is because RCA did not replace the unit with a new one -- instead they sent a refurbished unit. I'm not sure, but I'd be willing to bet the refurbished has an older chipset that would account for the poor widescreen display problems.

Dealing with RCA tech support was a nightmare. At first they told me they could send a unit to a local Mailboxes, etc. outlet and I could swap it. In the meantime, Best Buy finally let me exchange it. In the long run, RCA's inflexibility and unwillingness to let tech reps in the call-in center make decisions made dealing with returns a nightmare. Even with the screen problem, I didn't want to exchange another time -- I was too worried of getting a unit with worse faults.

It's too bad poor tech support and exchange service can overshadow the quality of a product

UPDATE: I previously reported that the unit won't play DVD+RW. I have found through additional testing that it will indeed play DVD+RW - but only if you have enough video content on the disc for the unit to reconize it. I don't know the exact video length required to be able to play - but at least with a fairly full disc it will indeed play.

Comments:
I have to update my previous comments and downgrade this recorder to SKIP IT.

Although the unit does play MP3 files - it cuts off the first 1-2 seconds of each track - rendering MP3 playback useless.

The RCA web site has no information about this problem and their on-line "customer support" is a joke.

I have not heard about any class action suits against RCA for selling a defective product, false advertising, etc. - anyone know of any?

There is no fast forward/fast reverse buttons on the unit itself to move inside the current track/chapter - you HAVE to use the remote control. Big oversite.

Comments:
I purchased this on-line for about $350. It is a great machine - but it is power hungry - 2.2 Amps at 9v. The battery is about 5400 Amp Hours at 7.5 volts - less than 3 hours play time.

I was disappointed that it does not play DVD+RW - but it does play DVD+R just fine. With all the compatibility hype over DVD+RW - I have been very disappointed in not being able to play DVD+RW media on most DVD players and DVD-ROM drives. DVD+R is much more compatible - have not found anything - including OLD DVD players - which won't play it.

I love this unit - although a bit heavy. Been unable to find extra battery packs to purchase for it - but any pack at 7.5-9 volts with a high amp hour rating that won't be damaged by the high power drain will work. Power plug adapters at Radio Shack (Type B) work great. It even runs on 12v with a power adapter and Adaptaplug set to 7.5 or 9 volts ("Digital" power adapter at Batteries Plus - it is rated at 2amps - and heats up a little when connected to the 2.2 amp DVD player - but appears to work fine). This allows cross country playing off car cig. lighter outlet.

For air travel - a 7.5 Amp Hour 12v lead acid battery will play for about 3 hours.

I have also maid my own battery pack consisting of 8 1700 mAHr NiMH batteries. It will play for about an hour - and the batteries get quite warm due to the high power demands of the player.

Wish battery playback was longer. Wish extra batteries could be purchased separately.

It won't play MP3 files written to DVD+R - they must be written to CD-R/RW (a really negative).

miniDVD/cDVD

Comments:
I recently purchased this player and am very happy
with it.

Pros:
This machine has played everything I've thrown at
it, except miniDVD. It even plays a handful of
Terapin-made CD-Rs in sync. This machine has
switchable Video IN/OUT ports, so you can use
this as a monitor for an external VCR or other video
device; it also allows for S-Video IN/OUT as well.
Someone reported on another web site
(amazon.com I think) that you can't use these video
IN/OUT connections when the battery is
connected, and to a point, thats true. All
you need to do is detach the battery from the unit to
reveal the ports .. the battery remains connected
as a power source through its little cable/tether
(the person who reported that was not amongst
humanity's most brilliant). Another "pro" of this
machine is its cost -- I got mine for US$499 online,
tax free and minimal shipping. Other products with
less functionality cost much more (still).

Cons:
This little thing is pretty weighty! I've held one of
the Panasonic portables and they're twice as light,
it seems! HOWEVER, the feature-set on this
machine is so amazing, a extra pound or two does
not detract from its versatility. I'm pretty sure the
Panasonics play only standard VCDs as well as
DVDs, while this one plays everything! So to
repeat, the con on this one was "a little extra
weight"! Another problem I had with the player is
that is chops off the first two or three seconds of
MP3 files, like the old Apex machines did. I'm
currently looking for a firmware upgrade for this
machine to fix that, without losing too much
functionality. The other major "con" of this
machine is that heat factor. Even though the
manual says the heating of the bottom is normal,
and it does heat up pretty fast, I'm worried this heat
issue will eventually cause damage.

Oh, to the person below who wants to disable the
monitor while listening to music CD's: just close
the lid. The disc, no matter what type, will keep
playing, even if the lid is closed.

Comments:
Overall very compact, clever piece of equipment. I'd recommend it.

vcds on cd-r(w), dvd-r and dvd-rw worked fine for me with this player. (dvd-rs tested are the ones from cd-recordable.com) I had trouble with svcds. The sound and video kept moving in and out of sync on discs that worked fine on other machines.

Complaints: I wish the battery lasted longer or there was some mode to switch the screen off while playing music. Also, I wish the headphones went a bit louder-it's kind of hard to hear on an airplane.

Comments:
Nice portable. Plays my XSVCDs (5 mps) perfectly. Li-on battery lasts about 2 1/2 hrs.
Pros:
The LCD display is very high quality. The image is stunning. Very compact. On-player controls nicely laid out. Inexpensive.
Cons:
Headphone "gain" is a little low. Slight underscan on the left side of the LCD (only noticable with a video test disc). Gets hot (bottom plate) after about 1/2 hr of use (based on comments about other portables, looks like a common situation). Can't use and charge the battery at the same time.

Overall, nice little unit.
Note: This is Shinco OEM.

Comments:
Nifty player for $700.00 at Target (just in on 4/1/01).
Plays CDR-based (X)SVCD and VCD except for mini-DVD. The player does not give up on fast forward and reverse like some. In comparison, the Audiovox portable has the same size 5.8 screen but is about twice as heavy. I think the Audiovox screen is better (there must be video noise reduction code, since artifacts and noise are noticeably cleaner). However, the Audiovox is very, very sensitive to dirt and scratches. The RCA can do SVCD at higher bitrates than the Audiovox, at least in my tests.
