This player plays pretty much any DVD on any format I've tried.
There are a few issues I have with it, however. The angle indicator stays on after you change angles and the players audio menu doesn't work properly if there are missing audio selections(audio disabled but ifos not edited).
There's only one disc that it had trouble playing and that was Final Destination 3s choose their fate special feature - the movie plays fine though. |

| This DVD player is the SVCD/VCD master. It will play about any wacky bitrate you want to use. I bought it for that and was extremely happy until I recently started trying to uses DVD+/-R discs. I expected it to be as forgiving with DVDs as with VCDs but it is most definitely not. First off, it wouldn't even load most burns on a DVD+r disc. When it would, it would play about 1 frame a second. I switched to DVD-Rs at 4x and it works decent, but only if you have one movie per disc and no menus. It won't even load up if I do a menu. Also, I cannot run at the low res DVD standard of 352x240 (I wanted to fit more of the kids shows on one disc). I thought this was the best player on the block until I got a DVD burner. Bottom line SVCD or VCD - superb. DVD - medicore. This player is also very sensitive to fingerprints. I have to constantly clean my discs for even tiny ones. |

| originally bought on its inital release @ radio shack back in mid 2001 carton damage box. have until now only used either audio, mp3 audio on cdr, dvd, or home made svcd. just recently purchased a internal dvd multi format r/rw drive. my first try using a dvd +rw and to my amaizement it works great. full menu navigation picture perfect. no problems. sorry i have not purchased a burner to enhance its use earlier than this. it will not play dvd with mp3 in data format with folders (disc in question had no menu). the mp3 discs i have used have all been cdr with a menu list made with easy cd creator having folder support. |

| I have actually had this DVD Player for a while but only used it for rented or bought DVD's until before Christmas. I purchased this Player at Radio Shack about 2 or 3 years ago for $125.00 but now it's much cheaper(if it's even produced anymore). I am currently only using this player to view VCD,XVCD,SVCD, and XSCVD. I am in the process of buying a DVD burner so I will give more comments when I get to use the DVD burner for making DVD's. This burner has played everything that I have tried so far except for the bad burns. Bad burns are the most likely cause of something not playing on most player's(if the media is compatable). I have used Nero to burn most of my vcd's & SVCD's but have also used VCD Easy. This player would be a still if it's still produced for a cheaper price. The only brand name media that will not play is Memorex CD-RW. Verbatim & Maxell seem to give the best performance.Verbatim seems to be quite a bit of difference in better picture quality than most other media on this player.Maxell is also very good. I give this player a 9 until we can burn some DVD's to test the player. Not any of the discs made have give me any playback problems except for the Memorex CD-RW's. The rest have played flawlessly. |

Plays DVDs great -- even badly scratched movies (which is why I bought it a year ago)
Technically will play DVD-R, although with tons of artifacts and skipping. Giving this guy a 7 because this unit is not advertised to play DVD-R but at least tries to.
Would not recommend for DVD-R because of the artifacts. Just picked up a Toshiba SD4900 and it plays the same DVD-R discs perfectly. |

Plays some VCDs out of synch.
But my big beef with this player is that it has serious trouble playing dual-layered DVDs. It freezes and chapters that are in the dual layer are not accessible from the scene selection menu.
I discovered this while trying to watch a borrowed DVD of Terminator 2, which I figured was due to the age or condition of that particular DVD, and so I didn't really care. I knew it was a serious problem when I purchased Alien Quadrilogy. I have to either unplug the player, or go into the player menu and select 'reset to factory defaults' every time I want to play a dual-layered DVD. Very annoying.
Am I the only one who has experienced this ?
Please e-mail at mars396@hotmail.com with 'RC5240P' in the subject. Thanks ! |

This is what ive tried since i own this player for 2 years now:
vcd: Ive only tried one using nero to burn, the sound always come out of sync.
svcd: 2000-2500kbits play like a charm with every cheap cdr brand ive tried and using nero to burn.
xcvd: 720x480 at 3500-4500kbits and it play #1 with cheap cdr and using nero.
DVD+R: Using khypermedia 2.4x and using tmpg dvd author to burn, play #1!
DVD+RW: Using HP 2.4x and using tmpg dvd author to burn, play #1 again!!
This is a really great player but i dont know if you can buy it anymore.

This player was given to me from my uncle when I moved in with him for school. I have a Sanyo DVD player back at home, which performed much better than this player. First off, I don't know what all you people are saying about good VCD playback. This DVD player blows ass for VCDs. I tried numerous VCDs, with all different settings using Tmpgenc, burned with Nero, and then this player sucks ass for playing them. I read through some comments here and it seems to me like there are other experiencing the same problem. VCDs play like shit. The audio goes completely out of synch, because the video either fast-forward too many frames, or it slows down. I don't think that it's my VCD burning techniques causing this problem but it's the DVD player. Maybe this problem is very rare, I don't know. Most people report having good VCD playback.. but for me, it just sucked. Try something else.
The DVD playback is excellent though, i must say. Every movie I threw into this baby played back perfectly fine and with great picture and sound. |

I have had this unit for 1 1/2 years and in general been very happy. Plays CD-R (various brands)and RW (even generic brands) no problem and .MP3's (10 hours on a 700Mb). VCD's also play well. The DVD image seems fine on my TV and I like the zoom feature.
I have had a problem with the remote which seems to need the batteries reseated or replaced often.
DVD's with slight smudges or scratches do not seem to play well even though they play fine on my computer DVD-ROM drive. We have had to return new DVD's to the store because they would not play well out of the box in this player.
The only DVD-R brand I have tried so far is TDK (rebranded Maxell) burned with my Toshiba SD-R5002 which worked fine. I tried CompUSA brand DVD-RW, but they would not play in this player (worked fine in the burner though). |

As far as MPEG1/2 ISO (plays MPEG1/MPEG2 files with no authoring) I have not had any success. If I put some MPEG2 files on a CD the DVD player thinks they are either VCD 1.1 or MPG depending on the file extension (mpg or mpeg) and all I get is static and no picture. If you know how to get this to work please e-mail me. ksmit14@lsu.edu

2 reasons why this player don't get a 10..
MP3 long file name support and does not offer any kind of track repeat for sVCD..
Wanted to get a player that can play a looping video for business.. the SVCD quality is superb.. so is the DVD picture..
wonderful options..
Bought it at Radio Shack for $99 on sale.. what a steal.. was going to get an APEX 3201 because of compent out and digital optical out.. but this was actually cheaper!
great player.. |

This is the third report I have put in about this player. The first time I gave it a 10, the second time I gave it an 8, and now I'm giving it a 9, because I got it to play CVD's. It won't play standard CVD's, but it will play CVD's with a special settings while encoding. I have come up with a template (based on a template from Kwag - www.kvcd.net) that will play a CVD perfectly. The template I have come up with will encode 43 minutes (about the length of an hour TV show without commercials) on one 80 minute CD, with excellent quality, even on an HDTV. I've made it available for download at: http://www.geocities.com/j1d10t/
I hope this helps anyone trying to decide if they want this player, and/or trying to create a CVD for this player. |

| I had given this a rating of 10 before, because of how it had preformed for me with DVDs, VCDs, and SVCDs. But after trying X(S)VCDs I have to give it a rating of 8. It will play standard resolutions (720x480, 704x480, 480x480, and 352x240) but not "non-standard" resolutions, like CVD (352x480) or 528x480, 640x480 - it compresses the picture on to one side of the screen, but for CVD it plays full screen, but the picture is extremely blocky. Still a very nice player, but it's too bad that it won't play CVDs. And when playing music CDs, you can not select a track above 9 directly from the remote. But otherwise it has a really good picture, even on my Sony 51" widescreen HDTV. Both though the A/V cables, and the component cables. |

| This is the first DVD player I ever bought and the only one I own (other than my Xbox). Had no problems until about six months in the tray would no longer open. Tried unlocking the tray using the procedures listed on the rca website with no luck. RCA replaced it after I complained enough. I've had this player for almost a year now and have had no technical difficulties until now. Like previous posts, the player has played everything I've put in. I have had some problems with vcd playback but for the most part it's work ok. I recently bought a Cendyne DVD-R burner and most backups played fine, but here is where the technical problems started. I use DVD XCopy to backup DVDs that will fit on one disc but I have used the DVD9 to one method listed on this site to burn multi-discs to one DVD. I backed up a widescreen only movie using DVD2ONE and when I played it back on the RCA it was in full screen. DVD2ONE acknowledges this problem but also states that the DVD player is to blame stating that some players uses the screen size of the menu to play the movie even though DVD2ONE strips the menus. Now, every movie I put in the RCA, including original DVDs, plays @ 4:3 even if the only format on the dvd is 16:9. The picture is distorted and looks horrible. I've checked the player settings and I've tried to reset the player to factory settings according to the RCA website without success once again. To add to this, my Xbox plays the DVD2ONE movies without any problems. I have also had some DVDs that I burned give me choppy playback in the RCA and those too play fine in the Xbox. My recommendation is to stay away from this player unless you enjoy frustration. Either get a different player or buy an Xbox |

| I purchased this RCA DVD player about 6 months ago, and so far everything that I have thrown at it has worked, chapters and all. I only purchased this unit after I studied the reviews on this site. I hope this report will help others that are looking to purchase this unit, if you encode your movies right you will get what you want from this unit. |

EVERYTHING I have put in to this player it has played. This was meant to be my second DVD player next to my $250.00 Sony. But the RCA plays everything and the Sony barely plays anything. So little to say... wish I had gotten 2 of these. :D
I just started with DVD-R/RW's(which worked first time), but as far as CD-R's I've never had a problem no matter what brand they were. Even the Optimum 94 cent for a spindle of 50 works fine for my VCD's, SVCD's, XVCD's, and MP3's.
I haven't had any problems with this player at all... knock on wood. |

| I bought this DVD player about a year ago, and I love it. I bought it before I started getting in to (S)VCD's, and that kind of stuff. I'm still new at this (I've only burned about 15-20 (S)VCD's) but it plays all the VCD's and SVCD's (using the standard bit rates) I've made using TMPGEnc (version 2.53), and burning them with Nero 5.5. I have had no problem with the sound being out of sync. If the picture has looked at all blocky, it's because it was that way when the file was encoded to ,mpg, and not the DVD players fault. And I've burned some VCD's that JUST fit on the CD - I've had to use the "over burn" feature in Nero just to make it fit on the CD. The player will fast forward and rewind just fine with (S)VCD's. Sure, it's not as smooth as with a DVD, but there is a quality difference between (S)VCD and DVD, so I guess that's why. I can't wait to try the XVCD, XSVCD's and DVD+R's in this player. |

We have had this unit since May of 2002. It has been excellent. Plays everything I have recorded VCD & SVCD including the stuff generated with 'Tmpgenc'. As a matter of fact it plays SVCD's recorded at up to 32x speed from the Optorite CW4002 recorder I have. My usual media are RCA 2x CDR's from the local surplus place. These are cheap at $0.20 each. I guess most people look at the 2x speed and leave them alone. I usually burn the disks at 8 or 10 times speed. My old ZIP CD was limited to 4x and the player played these fine also. Including the ones that that ended up being coasters because of buffer under runs.
The only thing that is negative about the unit is the short file names when attempting to find songs on an MP3 disk.
I have recommended it to a few friends. |

For quite a while i hated my RCA 5240p because it would not properly play any VCD or SVCDs i put in it. But I have since discovered the problem is not with my player, but with TMPGENC.
Every VCD encoded with TMPGENC skips/warps and goes out of sync. And SVCDs encoded in TMPGENC wont fast forward or rewind with crashing the machine. Even though these files play perfect in other DVD players (i have tested them on JVC and APEX machines and they play fine.)
VCDs and SVCDs encoded with Panasonic, LSX, and CCE all play fine.
If you are having problems with VCDs and SVCDs on this machine try NOT using TMPGENC.
I am now VERY happy with the RCA 5240p |

Ok, I have had this player now for 3 months,
after taking back a GoVideo 4150. This RCA is
hands down one of the best units ever, and fits perfectly into my RCA/GE setup with my other video equiptment.
Now for the test I have done...First I'd like to say
it is a very Macintosh compatible player. By that
I mean the programs I have used to make VCDs,
XVCDs, SVCDs, and DVDs have all been on the Macintosh platform, using OEM Macintosh
CD/CD-RW burners and the Pioneer SuperDrive/A-104.
Using Toast Titaninum 5.2, I movie 2.11 and IDVD2, I have made DVDs and VCDs, using VCD Builder 1.1, I have made SVCDS with chapter menus, on the following brands of media:
Imation
Fuji*
Maxell*
Sony*
Optimum
Compusa
TDK
Verbatim
HiVal
WalMart
Teac/Khypermedia
* indicates both DVD and CD-R blanks
and have had no problems whatsoever.
The playback quality is superb, and I have had no problems with syncing of audio.
SVCD chapters work great, I can jump to specific scenes without any trouble on 80 min CD-Rs.
All of my VCds have been recognized by the player as "VCD 2.0" standard, maybe that has to do with my software?
I am in the middle of testing the MP3 Cd compatiblity...so far, burning an MP3 CD
without folders on the Macintosh works, and I can
scroll through tracks in a big listing, as per the manual.
I plan to further test and report back on MP3 ID tags
( the last MP3 CD had a mix of ID tags with and without) and on folder structure.
All I can say is it is a rock solid player, I've had no problems, and although I will admidt I am somewhat still new ( I have only been burning
VCDs/DVDs for 3 months) the RC5240 works great.
Also, Wal-Mart has lowered these to $79.99 in my area, which is pretty good price. The radio shacks here have replaced this by carrying the inferior 52220N, which is their loss.
I am rating this a 9 until I test further the MP3 support. |
