Tried VCD's and it would only play them if burned on a Maxell CD-RW.

I have 4 DVD's burned on Maxell DVD-R's, they play perfectly.

I tried 2 burned on Dynex DVD-R's that were burned on the same exact burner with teh same exact software, neither one worked properly. One will not play any Special Features, freezes before the Main Menu and only plays to about Chapter 3 (plays fine if you do chapter skip, though). The other has the same problems but froze about halfway through the main feature.

I do have to say that I doubt the problems are with the player, since neither Dynex disks will work (same problems) in my other player or DVD-ROM drive, where the Maxells do just fine.

Well Cursor and Prime Peripherals works for VCD when burned w/ Nero. However, the other day I picked up a new 50 pack of Prime Peripherals, these were more shiney silvery, and it's a 40x max speed. However, these did not work, I was pissed, as I bought these only so that they would work for the player. I think it takes CDs that are thicker generally and the new PP cds are thinner than they were... so beware.

I like most other people thought this player
sucked, until I found this forum and started
to experiment with it again. I had a hard time finding media that would play my VCD's. Almost
all CD-RW's work well, but I don't like using CD-RW's for VCD's. These are only good for testing (not practical in my opinion), and these also somehow seem to refresh the player when it starts to act crappy (others have mentioned this here). So its good to keep one around. I needed CD-R's to work and they do! In the Chicago land area I've found that ProMedia 80min.(which is now hard to find) and Maxell CD-R MUSIC 80min. - the gold labeled/packaged disks blue bottom only. I recently discovered the Maxell just before giving up on this player finding media locally. I also like encoding with TMPGEnc and burning with NERO 5. Playback control, menus and chapters work too. Why waste time with this player? I wanted a disk that would play in all of my players, living room, car, bedroom etc... Is it worth the time effort spent disks and money ... No. One plus for this player is that it plays the store bought DVD's flawlessly. That alone makes its worth keeping. My next player will be an XBOX that will play anything I throw at it.

This is just an update to my previous post on the 5220P
I recently got my hands on the NEC ND-1100a 4X +R burner, and so far, I've burnt discs with Nero and TMPGEnc Editor and they play perfectly--bnth +Rs and +RWs.

The program that I used to produce the video was VideoStudio 6.

I didn't believe at first, but I do now. It's not just a question of media type. It's also a question of media software. I was trying to burn VCD's with a shareware burning software with no luck. Then I tried Toast (I should say that I use a Mac) and walah! It worked like a charm. I used Memorex 74 min 4x CD-RW's, burning in Toast at 2x. Worked like a charm the very first time I tried it. I'm going to try SVCD and some of the others. But I'm quite pleased that even though it specifically says you CAN'T do VCD's in the manual, it works. (I also made menus, no problems.

As for the DVD player erasing the VCD... I don't buy that for a minute. I think that was a scare tactic.

I bought this player back in 2000 at Best Buy for $200 because I had heard that it was supposedly a good player.

What was I Thinking?

The player has been nothing but trouble from Day One. It skips, it barely reads commercial DVDs and CDs, it barely reads CD-RWs, and I actually had to try out a commercial VCD on it to find out that it does play them! I also have instances where I get no digital sound out of the Toslink output--one minute, it works and the next, it's gone.

It does have one saving grace: it did manage to play a +R somebody burned for me using one of the Ulead programs, but I suspect that may because it's a well-behaved disc and an exception, not the rule.

I have yet to actually test it out with any burnt DVDs of my own, but I'll be getting NEC's dual-format burner next week, so I'll have the chance.

As soon as I get the chance, I'm dumping this POS for something--anything--that doesn't have RCA's logo on it, probably the Cyberhome CH-DVD 300 or Panasonic S35, or even an older model actually made in Japan!

A lot of people seem to have problems with this player. Here's what ya gotta do.

CD-R/RW Type: any kind with a dark bottom. I use black bottom CD-R's and blue bottom CD-RW's. These always work. This player can't read the light colored bottom cd's due to the wavelength it uses for reading.

Encoder: Use either AVI2MPG or TMPGEnc. Plus. These work all the time.

Burner Software: Nero 5.* works. Don't use VCDEasy, it won't play it.

This player plays VCD and XVCD. A lot of people say SVCD multiplexed with VCD header and burn as non-compliant vcd. That is considered an XVCD. When using this method, you're VCD's will work 100% of the time.

This is just an update to my earlier post, but I finally found the manual that came with my DVD player and guess what folks? It says in the manual that you cannot use CD-R or CD-RW media in this DVD player because the "wavelength" of the DVD player can cause the CD-R or CD-RW to be erased! So, I guess I'll just give up on being able to ever play a (S)VCD in this system.

I still say it's a very good off-the-shelf DVD player though -- I wish I could combine its features with a newer DVD player's that allows for (S)VCDs.

This thing sucks! I tried CD-R and CD-RW VCDs. Didn't work. And on it it says Divx (test that could light up) and I tried DivX / MPEG 4 CD's: didn't work!

And about the Prime Peripherals crap - it's too costly, I get my CD's free after rebates and stuff.

Ok that's it!

I gave this DVD player an 8 because it does handle true off-the-shelf DVDs just fine, as well as all burned and off-the-shelf audio CDs I've tried, including on CD-R and CD-RW. However, I tried every capture software, burner software, etc., I could get my hands on as well as over a dozen different types of CD-R and CD-RW disks to get a VCD to play and it just won't. I read and tried all the tips, tricks, hacks, etc., that are posted here, but it just will not play a VCD, which I find very weird since it will read the same namebrand of CD if its an audio disc.

In summary, I do not feel that the DVD player is at fault because it's a good player. I've found newer players to be annoying the way they will not allow you to immediately bypass copyright notices, etc. when playing a DVD like this one does. I just think that the VCD "standard" isn't there yet, so you cannot really blame the player for not adhering to a rather roaming standard. Incidentally, I have yet to find a DVD player that will reliably play VCDs, including the "never fail" ones listed here.

Can't recommend buying this DVD player for (S)VCDs, unless you just have time to waste on frustration, but this is a great player for DVD and audio CDs.

Just burned a Cursor 80 min. CD-RW VCD 1.1 in VCDEasy (some people are reporting burning a VCD 1.0 in VCDEasy. Please let me know how since v.1.1.1 does not list that in the header information) and it not only wouldn't play in this player, but it also locked up the machine (no controls work) and shut down the power! At least CVD discs say it is not a compatible disc! For the record, my player is serial # 923267344 and was manufactured in 1999. It also had a list price when purchased of $299US! Please let me know what the serials/manufacture dates are for the machines that seem to be VCD compatible. This one definitely isn't!

OK. Here is my comments about this DVD player. I love it! First of all the down side is that it won't play Verbatim CD-R's or PNY CD-R's. Those are the only 2 I have tested. The up side is that I just burned my first DVD-R and I used maxell DVD-R brand. I didn't think it was going to work, but it works wonderfully. The quality is just like the DVD, I originally bought, only without all the extra stuff that I never needed. I burned it using this website:

http://www.digital-forums.com/dvd2dvdr/intro.htm

For new beginners, I would suggest this website because it tells you how to do it and it is very easy. It takes a while, but I checked out many different ways to try and make DVD's, and this was the only one that worked for me. I definitely recommend this to all new beginners!

Prime Peripherals CD-R media works every time. I tried a lot of others without luck, both CD-R and CD-RW. I use Windows Movie Maker to grab DV-AVI from my camera (via FireWire) then convert it using TMPGEnc. I burn with VCDEasy, and bingo! home movies on my TV.

One of these days I'll buy a new DVD player that does SVCD, but for now the RCA 5220P is a real workhorse.

I have had flawless VCD performance from this player using Memorex brand, 80 minute, high speed, CD-RWs. I have not yet found a CD-R that will play, but I haven't really tried very many because the CD-RWs are cheap and I know they work.

I use TMPGEnc to encode files and VCDEasy to burn them to the CD-RW. I always set VCDEasy to VCD 1.0 mode, even when making an SVCD. In order to make an (X)SVCD I have to run the file through one of the TMPGEnc tools to change the hearder of the file to VCD, otherwise I just get a black screen.

Ok, I got a new Sony Mini DV camcorder and have been trying to burn VCD's that will work
in my RCA 5220P DVD player. I've tried several brands on CD-R's, 650 and 700 mb ones
and so far I've had no luck getting any CD-R's to play in this player. It simply shows no
disc in the player with a CD-R.

I purchased a 5 pack of Sony CD-RW's from Staples. These are the High Speed 4x - 10x
burning speed type, 650 mb..model number 5cdrw650hs.

I burned my VCD's with Nero 5.5.8.x, using the maximum burning speed for the CD-RW's of
10x and every one I've burned so far plays perfect in the RCA 5220P DVD player, even though
RCA list that this unit WILL NOT play VCD's.

So, if you're having problems getting CD-R's to work, try CD-RW's.
