Locks up randomly, ever since out of the box. Whether recording, playing, or just sitting there, whether on or on standby. Clock time gets held at whenever it locks up. Needs multiple plugging and unplugging to get it to deliver menu again. Time uplugged doesn't matter. Checked firmware, has latest.
RCA customer service keeps telling me to take it to 1)service center which has been bought out and no longer services RCA 2)service center which hates to work on RCA, wishes I don't bring it in, and says it has a month backup 3)service center which is 10 miles in the wrong direction from my commute and is only open from 10-12 am, mon-thurs. All avenues of contact with RCA end up delivering this same advice. I'm about to sell it for scrap, even though it's still got 9 months of warranty left.

Quote from above "Doesn't state on box but it DOES record to Dual Layer +R media (Memorex and Verbatim so far)even though an E-mail To RCA resulted in them responding that it does not." Check the RCA web site and the now state it does support DL disk. what a nice bonus on a already GREAT recorder.

I picked this up open box without anything (box only, not even a power cord) from Bestbuy for 90 bucks. So far it has been playing everything I have thrown at it, and even has a few tricks up its sleeves.

The optical drive is a full size IDE drive same as a computer. You can unplug the phillips drive inside the unit, and plug in basically any optical drive, and it will boot up like normal, and continue to read everything like it did before. I connected an old samsung cd burner to it, and it was reading my xvid cd's perfectly. This might be very nice if your drive gets damaged or starts to not read discs anymore, you can just stick in any old dvd burner, and it will continue to work. This may also expand dvd media compatibility as well.

It has been able to work with the most basic media I have thrown at it to record shows with. So far I have used OfficeMax (Ritek P16) DVD+R, and Sony DVD+RW discs with much success. I am on my 6-7 erase on the Sony DVD+RW so far, and it still reads and writes just fine.

Well, here's one for you all to figure out. I purchased this unit about 3 weeks ago. Tried it out with the Verbatim DVD+RW that it came with. Worked great, quality excellent. Hppened to have 4 TDK DVD+R's sitting around so about a week later I went to record a one hour show. After 1 minute an error message popped up, "Disc may be dirty..." I put in another, then another and finally opened up a new pack of 25 TDK DVD+R's that I bought (since the 4 originals have been sitting for 2 years). On a whim I put in a DVD-R and what would you know... It recorded just fine! According to the manual that should not be happening. Even the DVR reports it is writing to a DVD+VR (what is a +VR). However, that was the only disc that has worked. Wasted 3 DVD-R's since then. Since then, So far no answer from RCA. Anyone else have any comments?

Comments:
Bought first unit at Best Buy due to interest in 1080i upscaling and DVD+R DL capability. First unit would not burn to any disk including the sample DVD+RW included. All appearances said the disk was burned, however, then it detected a disk fault. Tried 3 different DVD+R and one DVD+R DL, all failed. The DRC8060N did detect the DL disk but... no manual support.

Returned to Best Buy and exchanged for another. Was able to burn a DVD+R but not a DVD+R DL. Again, the disk was recognized (blank) but once burning was complete, a disk error kept it from working. 2 DVD+R DL disks wasted, 1 good DVD+R burn.

Menu layout is nice as is setup. Pre-recorded DVD picture very nice on a HD TV via the HDMI interface. Unfortunately, given the inability to burn DVD+R DL (at least consistently), this one is on its way back to the store.

Bought one at the end of December, tried it on a two VHS->DVD projects, and it worked fine. Now the recorder is acting funny, it stops recording mysteriously--although the front record button remains lit red--and the only way to tell it's done this is to use the on-screen "Info" button, and the timer has stopped at 26:04 (for example), yet it still says REC underneath, and the Record button is lit up. Sure enough, when you watch the movie, it has indeed stopped recording at 26:04 for no apparent reason. This occurred for both the Sony DVD+R media and the included Verbatim DVD+R disc.

I'm bringing it back to Best Buy and exchange it for the same model, as the 8060n seems to have a lot of promise, IF the transport mechanism is reliable.

Comments:
Played everything I threw at it. There is a dramatic pause when playing some DivX and SVCDs. It does, eventually, play them. Pause ranges from 10-20 seconds. I think it may be a media problem though. I have DivX files on newer media that play instantly. Could be the fact the quicker playing files are on DVD+R and not CD-R?

The remote response is excellent. Compared to a LG player I have in my house. I can point the remote at ANY angle and it will respond. Harmony remote had codes available.

Recorder came with a Fuji DVD+RW. It formatted in under a minute. Recording quality on excellent level is same as channel content. No degradation. I have not tried lower settings.

Some of my video files required I just had Dolby Digital selected under Digital Out options. If I selected all three (DD, DTS, and MPEG) it seems to get confused. For these troublesome flicks I deselect DTS and MPEG.

Upconversion is a little tricky. The manual says to hit the zoom key to change upconvert modes. I cannot get it to change modes. Highest is 480P. I am unsure if this is caused by the HDMI to DVI converter I am using to get output to my Infocus 4805SP Projector? I wasn't really interested in upconversion anyhow. As long as it does 480p. Sweet!

Purchased last one at Best Buy. $217 - $30 rebate = $187. Nice one year warranty compared to Cyberhome 1600MU and LG DRY-517. Both of those had 3 months labor and 1 year parts. LG has shoddy support. BTW.

Bought one and returned it after 1 week; it stopped reading my discs and showed "Unable to read disc" error on about 12 different discs (both Commercial DVD's and home made). Got 2nd unit at Best Buy on 12/12/05($196 with 10% BB Coupon, plus RCA still has a $30 rebate available =$166 total), so far no problems (recorded 20+ discs of shows from cable DVR). It has read every disc I gave it, includes cheap "Playo" media and all of my name brand discs. Doesn't state on box but it DOES record to Dual Layer +R media (Memorex and Verbatim so far)even though an E-mail To RCA resulted in them responding that it does not. Recording modes: 1 Hr. excellent quality, 2 Hr. very, very good, 3 Hr. acceptable (VHS quality). Haven't tried 6 or 8 Hrs, but based on 3 hour mode I would guess the quality would be poor. Finalizes SL DVD disc in under two minutes. So far quite happy with this purchase.

I have only had the unit for one week. So far, it has recorded successfully on a Memorex DVD+RW and has recorded successfully on several generic (Office Depot) DVD+R disks sith no problems. The only difficulty I have encountered was attempting to copy poor quality VCR tapes. The recorder would put a "poor quality" notice on the screen and stop recording. Good quality VCR tapes copied flawlessly.
I have found the unit to be all I hoped for as a recorder/playback machine and was pleased with the reproduction of VCD's, JPG's and MP3 discs produced on my computer. As I said, only one week, but so far, so good. Highly recommend.
