| I just want to confirm that it doesn't load the subtitle if it has a different name of the video file. Even a dot in the name makes a difference and you can't choose from a menu which subtitle load. |

I only want to add some things I don't see listed here:
* It doesn't support multiple sessions on a dvd (it only reads the first one)
* You can't choose what subtitle file to use. I assume that only loads the file with the exact name of the video file.
* The used font for displaying the subtitles is small and can't be configured (neither the color, background, etc).
Do you know of any way to update the firmware? |

| Seems to play Xvid movies fine, but when I put in a regular, commercially pressed DVD in, the video had a lot of jagged lines in it!? I _am_ running this through a RF Modulator, to I will check tomorrow of it works better going tirectly to a TV (on another TV in the house), but if it still has those same lines, I'll probably return the unit (It's not worth it if it can't play regular DVDs), and maybe pick up the Phillips unit that Wallyworld offers. |

| I only bought one to try to play my personal DVD-R & DVD+R movies. My other players (older RCA, Apex 1100 and Onkyo DV-SP302) had problems with one media or another. But this bad boy plays them both without a hitch. Best $47 I've ever spent (not counting Tijuana). |

OK, this is a player I rate very highly!
I purchased this unit as a replacement for a Philips DVD/DiX player (the new 5140). I'm pretty sure the chipset is the same. Certainly the GUI is very similar.
I'm mostly playing XViD & DivX files. The player will play most things, although it sometimes struggles with films encoded with DivX 3. Generally the video is fine but audio playback causes a problem.
Does not playack OGG audio - I am in the process of converting some XViD files with OGG audio to mp3 audio.
Has played all DVDs I have made on a variety of discs using my computer, or DVDs recorded on the home DVD Recorder.
This player also features TVGuardian which can be set up to filter foul language. This feature works on DVDs, but not on DivX or XViD files. I have not tested this feature on VCD formats.
Also plays KVCD files.
I purchased this unit for $49CAD in a WalMart store in Edmonton. Highly recommended for the money. |

| Good deal, got mine for $50 at Wal-Mart and its played every DivX and XviD file I've tried it in so far, with no problems whatsoever. Picture quality looks great too. Also plays mp3 and wma files, plus MPEG 1 and 2, and obviously DVD. The tray is pretty weak as noted in earlier reports, but shouldnt be a problem as long as youre careful. It does pause for a second or two when loading some divx/xvid files and when resuming playback after fast forwarding/rewinding but its not enough to be a major concern for me. The GUI is basic and only displays about 14-15 characters for files, but all around this is a great player for the money. I submitted a test result form to the folks at divxtest.com which should be posted shortly if you want to check it out too. |

Ok,
I have a pvr hauppauge 150 and I've been searching on here FOREVER to find a dvd player that will play the raw format off of the pvr (mpeg2) burnt to a data disc with nero.
This is the ONLY one I have found that consistently does the job. It played ALL of the old discs I had my other two players (philips dvd727 and yamakawa 238) wouldn't touch. I tried an avi/xvid file and it played, but was only audio. Plays my dvdr's and dvdrw's no problem (have used sony and imation).
I am VERY impressed with this dvd player so far. Only bad thing I can think of is that there appears to be no resume function. If you hit pause and it sits too long, or if you hit stop, it starts from the beginning (at least on my mpeg2 discs).
Otherwise is very very good. Would give it a 9.5, but not an option so has to be a 9. Hope this helps someone, I spent alot of time goign through dvd players to try to find one that did it. Good Luck!! |

I was going to get another Philips 642 to replace my dead one, but I saw the RCA unit on sale at Walmart for less. By the time I verified it's usefulness here (thanks for posting!) and returned the following day, they were sold out. Luckily there was a returned one with no remote on their "scratch and dent" shelf for a whopping $25cdn! I posted the $50 price because that's what others should expect. Instead I got the 247 and a case of beer for $50 :p
It plays everything my 642 would, my only peeve so far is the dinky tray (Shawn was right). Not only is it weak, but it doesn't offer any disc edge to grab, so you've got to bounce it out from underneath, which over time will put additional stress on the tray. I'm sure I'll manage to not hurt it, but I wouldn't trust it with kids up to about 12 or so.
But probably the smartest design issue was to make the look both silver and black in an attractive manner to match either style without turning off silver-haters such as myself. |

Just wanted to add a few things to my previous write-up. First, the player is great and I bought 2 more. Also I have found a few MPEG4 files that had problems with playback. Very high resolution (higher than DVD) seems to cause problems such as skipping or no video. The standard 350MB per 40-60 minute size seems to be the best bet, but I have also had success with much higher bitrates, but the resolution can only go so high. Also (rarely) the aspect ratio can be messed up where the widescreen image ais stretched to fill my entire 4:3 screen.
Lastly, the good news: You can have 14 (instead of 8) letter case-sensetive filenames if you use a new file system when burning. ISO 9660:1999 in Nero works well So does the regular old Finder burning in Mac OSX. However I had the filenames appear twice in the players file browser(but only one would play)on the disc burned in Finder, so you may need to delete any invisible files or something before burning that way to avoid that, if it really bothers you. |

Just picked this little gem (RCA DRC247N)up from Wal-Mart today, after reading Shawn W. from Canada's review. He was 100% correct in his description. Joe Haapala is referring to a COMPLETELY DIFFERENT machine, possibly the DRC8052. Anyways here is the rundown:
Pros: Easily made region free (using the method on this site). Tested and works with PAL -> NTSC conversion beautifully. Also MPG, AVI (XviD and DivX for sure, probably other MPEG4 as well, many bitrates and audio codecs), widescreen and 4:3, I even tested an SRT file for switchable subtitles - just give it the same name as the AVI, and it worked like a charm first try. You can navigate folders on data CDs and DVDs to find playable files on your old backups (this is how I tested the machine - every disc seemed to "just work"). Also, the composite output is much nicer than my Geforce4 on my PC or my roommates iBook. It is nice looking and is very responsive to user commands (we also have a very sluggish Desay DS-5701). It played the DVD+R and -R discs perfectly (my Daewoo DVD-5800 would often choke).
Cons: Cheap-o remote (much better than Desay, but still not ergonomic by modern standards - I'll be looking into a universal one). You are limited to 8 letter file names, but it just sorts the files in alphabetical order (from what I can tell), so if you already burned discs with long filenames, it is easy enough to figure out. And I don't know how to disable UOP (still the Daewoo's party piece). This is a short list of pretty small "cons".
Overall, a great machine that I would have been happy with for $100. At $50 it is a steal. Now, I just hope it prove itself reliable. |

| Comments: |
| For the $70 I paid from Zellers this is an amazing little DVD player. Was easily made Region Free with the remote hack found on this website and converts from PAL to NTSC, in the proper aspect ratio, beautifully thanks to the MediaTek MT1389DE chipset found inside. I opened mine up to confirm the chipset and was pleased to find the MT1389xx chipset after having such great luck with my LG LDA-530 unit. Divx and Xvid playback are flawless as this unit doesn't suffer the packed bitstream flaw that the Philips 642 player does. This player will also play back your Divx/Xvid files in the proper aspect on either a standard or widescreen TV. I was able to test this because my Sanyo 4:3 CRT TV has a 16:9 widescreen mode that I use for widescreen DVD playback. Overall a very capable player with the full selection of connections (component, s-video, composite, coaxial & optical), though I'm not sure what the last reviewer was talking about as this player does NOT sport HDMI and does NOT do upconversion to HD resolutions though as with most players now it is progressive scan. The only reason it was a 9 and not a 10 was lack of a universal remote (such as was included with my LG LDA-530) and the tray seems pretty weak (treat it with care and it should be OK). Another small issue is that filenames are limited to 8 characters in the file explorer just like in the old MS-DOS days, again the LG LDA-530 supports long filenames up to 32 characters. I would easily recommend this player to friends or family looking for a cheap player that handles MPEG4 files with ease and can be made region free for overseas PAL disc playback. |

| This player has very good video quality out of the HDMI port. It will upconvert to 720p or 1080i. It could handle all pressed and burned dvds thrown at it. The players guide states that it will not play PAL disks but it played pressed and burned ones just fine. It will play DivX but not XviD and if you have a wide screen tv it will display the file in its native aspect ratio. Some thing it won't do for raw MPG files. It even has a couple of memory card slots if you need that sort of thing. This is a great dvd player if you don't need to watch a lot of XviD. Also the region free code is the same as the RCA DRC247N. |
