I've tried lots of methods burning VCD's converted from AVI, DVD's converted from divx and DVD 1:1 copies and never had a problem. I've tried several different types of medias all at different speeds and still no problem. I've tried duplicating other problems people have reported here and everything I do still works. I burn with a Lite-On DVD -+R/RW 8X drive. For those who convert avi to vcd/dvd, check how you are re-encoding it because that is probably your problem.

i have 2 questions. I made a couple of vcds they seem to work fine except for a skip once and a while. When i burnt an svcd though the screen was grey but the video played. I'm thinking i encoded the video wrong any suggestions?? 1 more question now, i just recently bought a dvd+r drive.I encoded a svcd to mpeg2 dvd format using tmpgenc, the screen was yet again grey. Is it somehting im doing?? or is it just this dvd player??

It seems to only be able to play first half a of DVD+R or DVD+RW disc. When it gets to the second half of the disc, the picture freezes & pixelates.

I have also seen times when this player freezes (for a 1-3 seconds) on a comemrical DVD.

Both of these issues might be caused by a heat problem. I'm able to watch the second half of a DVD+R when the player is cold. I guess I could hook up a fan to it, but I think it will be easier to purchase a better player.

I've been using this player for several months and so far it's played every retail DVD I've put in it.

I recently bought a DVD+RW drive and have been testing various things with the player. It does appear so far to play VCD's.

I encoded VCD's with TMPGEnc and wrote them with Nero 6 on cheap PNY 80MIN CDRs. No skipping, no problem playing them.

The player does NOT seem to recognize SVCDs at all. I have yet to try the header trick to see if it works, I'll try it soon.

It plays the FujiFilm DVD+R's that I've put in it. Both backups of commercial disks and home made movies. I've fed about 20 of the Fuji's in too it so far and haven't had any complaints yet.

Actually it played one I wrote with Nero that NOTHING else can seem to read. Tried in PS2, XBox, Sony DVD Standalone and Sanyo Standalone as well as 2 DVD-ROM's. No go in any, but this player read it fine.

I've been using CopyToDVD since and have had no troubles at all.

This drive doesn't seem to like DVD+RW that much, sometimes it glitches, but I only have 1 RW to play with so I'm still experiementing.

I bought this because it's the cheapest RCA I could find, I got RCA because all my other equip is RCA.

I had no DVD problems, and there is an easy region hack. Unfortunatley XVCD is a nightmare, VCD is poor playback, SVCD.. possible but needs header trick. I also wish it had a Macrovision hack. MP3CD support is OK, not great.

I think I will return it for something that does XVCD & SVCD

Dont buy it..I bought and each VCD movie stops almost a minute or less. It also freezes and did not play the entire movie. I changed for a Pioneer 355 and all the movies i had burned from .avi to VCD works.!!! and SVCD too.!!! i'm very happy now. The difference was just $20.00 dollars. Thanks to all guys for their comments about this RCA DVD Player.
Remember...DONT BUY unless you want to suffer.

Bought this player last night, and will be taking it back in the morning. P-O-S.

It will NOT play anything that was burned beside standard audio disks. It plays commercial DVD's for 5-20 minutes, then skips like mad for a few minutes. By this time it's too late. I eject the disk, put it back in, and it says "incompatible disk". At this point it will play NOTHING besides standard audio CD's. Shut it off for a couple of hours, start it back up, and it's the same thing all over again.

STAY AWAY, AND DO NOT BUY!

It's not really a waste of money, since I can, and will take it back. It IS a big waste of time though!

I don't know why anybody had so many problems with playing VCD's with this dvd player. I burned some VCD's and played them flawlessly. I have a sony burner and used nero 5.5 which has the conversion built in. I have no problems with the playback. The remote is a little toyish and could use a make over. My player was even the display one. I also used tdk cdr's to burn at 24x write speed. If you don't have any luck then try using this setup.

Good Luck.

If you have any questions feel fre to email me.

After spending way too many hours experimenting with Nero, VirtualDub and TMPGenc in my efforts to create my first VCD, I was crushed to realize that this DVD player was having problems playing the resulting VCD, even though I'd done everything right. Reading through some of the other VCD-related comments posted here (which I probably should have done before buying the unit in the first place) just made me feel worse.

All that being said, I'm pleased to report success- this unit does play VCD's just fine, but the key seems to be that you burn the disc at a slow speed. My first two burns, on Maxell CD's burned at 8X speed, produced on my Dell PIII-500 system by a Plextor 8/4/32A, seemed to play properly but then stopped playing with about 15 minutes remaining on the disc. Re-inserting the disc and fast-forwarding to the point where it had previously stopped was a tedious process which also resulted in the disc stopping before it was finished playing.

My successful burn has withstood all sorts of fast-forwarding, chapter jumping, pausing and resuming. I pronounce it okay. I burned this disc from mpeg (converted from AVI with TMPGenc) using "NeroVision Express" (inluded free with the retail version of Nero) on a Fujifilm 80 Min/700MB 24X CD-R. I included a menu with several chapter break points using NeroVision, and burned the disc at 1X. I'll burn all future VCD's on Fujifilm discs at 1X.

By the way, all the DVD's I've rented from Blockbuster play flawlessly, and mp3 data discs also play just fine unless there are .jpg files on the disc. (ie: CD cover art.)

DO NOT BUY THIS PLAYER. I have had it for about 4 minths and I am going to try and exchange it today at future shop. When I first bought it, I thought it worked great, but I have trouble playing VCD's and even some DVD-R's. The DVD-R's that I burned myself play fine, but some that I got from others wouldnt play. What pushed me over the edge today is that it is freezing factory original brand new DISNEY DVD's. Can you beleive it? I do NOT recommend this player to anyone. Cheap look, cheap and laughable remote(looks like a toy)and my overall rating is -1.

Nice fit, finish. BUT doesn't do 1/2 of what is claimed for it.
Lost audio once when trying to start a DVD movie at a specific
chapter & scene. Finally got it going again by fast forwarding
from the beginning. Remote works OK but is not intuitive & may
not work anything but RCA stuff. All in all, if I had known
about this site & had the opportunity to read reviews before
purchasing a machine, this would not have been the one.
I'm taking it back to Canadian Tire ($160 Cdn) & will try a
Norcent, Apex or Electrohome next.

This player sucks! On top of not playing ANY SVCD's (Even trying the header trick to fool it):

1. It constantly hangs every few minutes from 1-15 seconds at a time when playing a VCD.

2. At times, it apparently freaks out and stops the VCD and won't take any commands from the remote except the power on/off.

My suggestion, go out to Kmart, Wal Mart, or Circuit City (they have the 3cd changer for like $60 last time I checked) and get an APEX, or head over to Best Buy and get a Mintek. They'll play everything you can throw at it.

I bought this player mainly to play my vcds. Well this was the wrong player to buy. Every ten minutes or so the disc would skip. I tried different media, but the player kept skipping my vcds. A few times the vcd skipped and the player went back to the menu screen and froze. I had to shut off the player and restart to play the vcd. The skipping makes the vcd unwatchable.

The player does read cd-r, cd-rw, mp3 and plays dvds great. I would avoid buying if you want to mainly play vcds.

I read that some people say they can't get SVCDs to play properly on this model, and therefore the player won't support it. They are dead wrong. The first night I had this I converted an AVI file to an MPEG-2 and then used Nero to burn the SVCD on a Hypermedia 32x CD and it played flawlessly. Same file burnt onto a 4x Verbatim DataLifePlus CD-RW was flawless as well. When I first burnt the first disc of the screener of LOTR, I couldn't get it to recognize on a Memorex 32x CD, but then I re-burnt it onto the afformentioned Hypermedia CD....excellent. I then tried on the Memorex brand again running at 16x and got a perfect copy, video and sound. For the price of this player, it is feature rich and very solid!

Burner- CyberDrive CW058D 32x12x48
Burner Program- Nero 5.5.10.0
Best Media- Hypermedia CD-R 32x

I bought this bug laden player several months ago at Dillards, they were sold out of the player I was looking for. I settled on this one only because of the vcd format. Big mistake, I too have experinece the quirks while playing vcds. Some interactive dvds also do not play well. It also has problems playing some music dvds(Corrs,Sade,Santana ect..). I wish I would have read these reveiws before blowing $115.00, To save you a major headache stay clear of this one.

About my only two complaints is 1) it skips on regular VCD's in about 2 minute intervals 2) At maximux fast-forward speed it does "freeze"...sometimes I have to power off the player. I haven't tried the SVCD's with the header trick yet (that'll be next). It play's MP3's perfectly, even on RW's. The price is mainly what got the player it's rating.

Plays DVDs flawlessly. MP3 works OK, but there's not much you can do with them. It doesn't support random play for MP3, neither can they be fastforward or reversed while in playback, which kinda sucks when you're trying to pick up sons on the guitar! It delivers great sound. VCDs are a problem... it skips every now and then except on SVCDs with header trick. The latter plays fine but it takes a little while because it starts with regular pauses of 1 second and suddenly it normalizes. The JPEG functions are OK and you can have both MP3s and JPEGs on the same disc and read them both, but you have to chose at the beginning what type of file to read and you can't go back to chose, you have to eject the CD and insert it again.
I would say it's OK if you are not picky about electronics. Personally, I returned it to the store ;-)

I gave this dvd player a 8 because it's pretty good. I got it last week at Circuit City for $100. It plays CD-R, CD-RW, DVD, VCD and MP3.
I used Easy CD creator 5 Platinum to create my VCD's and used Windows Media Player 9 to create my MP3/WMA cd's. I also used Windows Media
Player to create my audio cd's. All worked fine. Used Memorex and Verbatim cd-r's. Only one complaint. It skips on certain VCD's but not that bad. So far
everything i've thrown at it plays.
