ATTENTION:
How's this for a find, This PYE90DG is basically the same as a Magnavox MWR10D6. The menu's are exactly the same, Either remote operates both units exactly the same, Flawlessly (use the PYE remote to run the Magnavox, or vise versa). And the ultimate find,
If you have a Unfinalized disk from the Magnavox recorder, put it in the PYE, It will not only read it, it will allow you to edit it,add to the disk, but it will also finalize the disk.
Yes you heard me right, The PYE will Finalize a DVD made on the Magnavox!
How do I know, I have both the Magnavox MWR10D6 and the PYE PY90DG hooked up at the same time to my flatscreen and can switch between players.
I have tested this out and know this for a fact!!
If you can find both recorders, buy them! No more unfinalized coasters!!! |

This recorder has some more expensive models beaten, hands down.
For $133 at the City, I got the recorder and a 3-year warranty. It's performance is great for the price, as long as the two "slowest" speeds are used. HQ (1 hr.), SP (2 hr.) and SPP (2.5 hrs.) are all very good to excellent. The LP (3 hour speed) is more than acceptable. EP will look much like a VHS tape or Video CD from a good source, and SLP is nearly completely unacceptable, as it is with nearly every machine out there.
S-video input in the front and rear, with coax digital out for Dolby.
I used 8x and 16x DVDs for testing with no problems.
In the literature that came with the unit, it does say that it will play DVD DL disks that are formatted DVD-ROM mode.
The menu structure is very nice, with a cool looking background. Front display on the machine puts on quite a little dance when it finalizes a disk. There are enough edting features to put some titles and chapter info on your disks.
The unit does have a fan for heat dissipation. I know that heat buildup is an issue for some of the lower priced recorders.
For some odd reason, this machine has a built-in PAL converter that is unsuable. I tried to play a region O PAL disk, and it had a very pronounced frame-dropping effect. HOWEVER, THE UNIT NEVER CLAIMED TO PLAY PAL DISKS. It's a shame, because what I did see on the screen was a nice, clean picture with no conversion artifacts other than the frame dropping It plays NTSC very well, however. Also, the unit doesn't play Super VCD either, nor does it claim to.
Audio is as good as any DVD/CD player I've heard, and it doesn't cut off the very first half-second of MP3s the way many players do.
DVD-R/RW discs are formatted to DVD+VR mode for recording!!! Yes, you heard that correctly. I think it's a brilliant scheme. In spite of reports to the contrary, I have found DVD+R recordings to be much more compatible with different machines. Oftentimes, machines that usually cannot play recordable DVD's will make a valiant effort to play DVD+ format and completely reject DVD-.
The machine is almost an exact clone of other Funai machines, like the Sylvania. It's actually a nice-looking unit, in my opinion, and it caught my eye because of its styling.
I like it! Here are the reasons it didn't get a 10 rating:
---takes a little while to finalize
---I don't like the remote
---no support for non-region coded PAL disks
However, I bought this just as a recorder, and it does the job nicely.
If you'd like to check out its features, just look for "funai support" on Google, and you can download a PDF of the user manual.
Cheers!
