Be careful! There are versions of this player, like the one that I bought at Best Buy that do not support or play MP3.
Every website that I have seen this player touts that this player plays MP3, but the version I received did not. It the mp3 logo was not on the packaging or instructions.
It viewed JPG files just fine on DVD-R and +RW so I figure the media wasnt the problem, it was just another version of the DVD player that did not include mp3 support.
I triple verified that it was the correct model number, and returned it. |

Great little player for the price. Got it at Best Buy for $180 with an additional $20 mail-in rebate and 3 free DVD's.
Plays MP3's on DVD's (a really cool feature) except it seems to have trouble if the MP3s are more than two directory levels deep.
Plays every burned DVD and VCD I've thrown at it so far. so the compatibility is good.
My only complaint which may be fixable somehow? The player's "Mode" button seems to switch between three modes: standard 4:3 (black bars on either side), stretched 4:3, and vertically stretched 4:3. I haven't found a way to make the player play a 16:9 widescreen video in "true widescreen" mode; in one mode, there's a black square around the movie (it's playing it in 4:3 so there's bars on top and bottom, and it's not stretching the 4:3 so there's bars on either side.); I hit "mode" and I get the widescreen movie, stretched horizontally but not vertically, so there's still black bars on top and bottom and the picture is stretched; and one more push makes the movie fill the screen but it is a vertically-stretched version of the horizontally-stretched 4:3 image (and the size resampling seems to be a crude "nearest neighbor" method, so the video looks really bad!). I say, why put a 16:9 screen if the player only will support 4:3 in its hardware? This player needs to support true 16:9 display without any sort of stretching or similar tricks.
If anyone knows how to make this player truly play a widescreen DVD without any sort of stretching tricks, let me know! email: fmillion@themillionweb.com
Besides that quirk, this player is a great buy.

Have used this player for about 2 months. I burn all my movies on DVD+R or DVD+RW, and it plays everything.
Most of my movies are on Memorex, but a few are on Fuji. They both work with no problems. It even plays my VCD and SVCD's. Took it on vacation and watched a lot of movies without any problems. It is a little flimsy, but with proper care, it seems like it should be OK. For 200 bucks it appears to be a good buy. |

Plays all my PAL and NTSC DVD+Rs flawlessly, I have had no problem with VCD and XVCD playback (XVCD with chapters worked, even, you have to use the remote to go to the next chapter or else it freezes.) SVCD works very well, and the TV output is nice and sharp. I use it as my home DVD player as well as a portable one. I agree with whoever said it before: If this played DivX/XviD, it would be the perfect portable player!
9/10 due to lack of controls on the DVD player (Forced to use remote) and doesn't play DivX/XviD. |

| What can I say? I just picked this up at Costco for $239 Canadian after $40 off coupon. It came with bonus travel case, 2 sets of headphones with splitter, credit card remote, car adapter, ac adapter, audio/video cable and a lithium/ion rechargeable battery. The picture quality is excelent and the sound is very clean and detailed. On some dvd's the sound level is a little low through the speakers but seems fine through the supplied headphones. The sound level is fine when playing mp3's, vcd'c, svcd's and raw mpegs though. This thing plays all my burned dvd-r and dvd+r disks and is not picky with media so far and even plays 2 dvd-r's that play jerky in my other dvd players. It also plays all my vcd's, svcd's no problem with very good picture quality and sound. If they can make this thing play Divx and Xvid movies as well, they would have the ultimate portable player. I am giving it a 10 rating anyway :o) Get one !!!!! |

Paid $188 (plus $80 for 4yr coverage) at Best Buy for player. I had to swap the unit the next day, since an internal cable was not attached to the top directional buttons. I had to run everything with the remote.
On the plus side, the players image compares to units costing $600 or more. This player was far ahead in viewable angle from sides, great for multiple viewers around the screen. The intensity and color are impressive. I looked at about 12 types of players and kept coming back to this one for performance. Stereo sound is good for size of unit, again better than those costing much more. With headphone or add on speakers sound went from good to great. This unit does not have S-video but composite video/audio jacks are switchable from outputs to inputs. Great to use as a monitor from other sources.
Build quality was decent for the price. For long term performance we will have to wait and see... Battery warning occurs about 5 seconds prior to shutdown, make sure you are fully charged before use. Nice charge (red/green) indicator. Comes with AV cables, AC Adapter/charger, Car Adapter, Headset splitter, manual. A good value for the money, but the extra Best Buy coverage gives you peace of mind use. Strong performance from a cheap 7" unit. |

I haven't bought this player yet but have done extensive research of consumer reviews and found one that might help those of you that are trying to play VCDs and not being able to get it to work.
As I said, I haven't bought this player yet so don't know if the comments below really work. Hope this helps some of you as VCD compatability is very important to me too.
"It also plays VCD's. So far, I have not tried any other format except DVD and VCD. You have to set the unit to Region 0 to play VCD.
To make it region-free, all you have to do is to press Setup on the remote and advance to "Preferences". Then, you simply enter "1379" and then use the arrow keys to change to Region "0" and press enter. (This is confirmed in the online manual)." |

The first day I had this player I tested it with DVD-R, DVD-ROM, DVD+R, DVD+RW, and MP3s and everything worked perfectly. The second day, none of those same +R or +RW discs could be read. I reset the player back to the factory defaults but no difference. FRUSTRATING!
Build quality is not great but acceptable for the price. The player would see the disc door as being open when it was closed unless I placed a weight on the door! I solved this by placing a tiny bit of material on the underside of the door to press down on the sensor button. Video quality is good, max audio volume from the tiny speakers is way too low. Headphones or some kind of transmitter for the audio is a necessity unless in very quiet surroundings. There's also no volume control on the remote, no on-screen indicators for colour/brightness and no battery level display. Player does come with a bunch of accessories so it is a very good value.
For the price, the features are really outstanding but the quality is questionable. I intend to swap mine for a new one and see if it fixes the problems. |

Using Nero, I burned mp3's onto DVD+RW (Memorex, Sony and Maxell were tested) as one would burn files to a disc (DVD-ROM ISO), with albums divided into folders. No problem navigating folders, no problem playing a variety of mp3's (128kbit to 256kbit were tested). Not quite long filename support, but you do get 13 or 14 characters, so not quite short either (no option to scroll). You can turn off the LCD screen by shutting the lid and the music will continue to play, extending battery life.
To those interested in surround music, this does have an optical sound output and does recognize DTS encoded music cd's. DTS and DD are both passed through to the receiver optically and there is an RCA video out. Even better, the video-out jack doubles as a video-in jack by flipping a switch. This lets you play Playstation, show digital pictures, etc.
This plays a DVD movie burned onto DVD+RW, DVD+R, and DVD-R. SVCD's played great. The difference between SVCD and DVD was very noticeable, which tells me this LCD screen is high quality. The picture is crisp, tones are realistic, you get all controls like brightness, contrast, and color. MPEG-1 files and MPEG-2 files played well (burned on CD-R, CD-RW and DVD+RW), but no VCD support.
Speaker quality is lacking with the 1 inch speakers, but it is better than what I expected. Speech is very clear and understandable. Subtitles on the screen are easy to read also. With quality headphones, there is a slight lack of bass, but overall sound quality is very, very good.
The only cons I see are no long filename support, no VCD support (I use VCD for archiving TV shows and overall DVD player compatibility) and the book that comes with the player says the battery pack can only be charged 80 times? I thought rechargeables were good for 1000's of uses.
Someone said the drive mechanism makes too much noise, but it didn't bother me. It's not totally quiet, but I wouldn't have noticed it if someone hadn't said something.
Overall, this is the player I've been waiting for. A reasonably priced, lightweight portable with 7" screen at $250, which plays everything I normally use except VCD's. Even those will get converted to MPG and burned onto DVD, however. Awesome player! |

- Lithium Ion battery spec states 3 hours playtime and 300 full charge/discharge cycles.
- Undocumented support for SVCD and XSVCD (see below)
General comments:
A bit light on build quality (understandable, given the price), drive is a little loud (DVD is only single spin, after all) pixellation of image when picture is stretched (by default, on startup) to fill the full 16:9 LCD screen
VCD/SVCD/XSVCD/MPEG 1&2 ISO:

SVCD @ 480x480, 29.97fps, 1850000 Bit/Sec
VCD @ 352x240, 29.97fps, 1150000 Bit/Sec
(All burning done with Nero 5.5.10.42 on a Lite-ON LTR-32123S from either BIN/CUE or ISO images to inexpensive Verbatim and Memorex CDR and Memorex CDRW media)
The VCDHelp VCD test disc was "Not Recognized". It plays fine on my Sony DVP-NS415 so I know there to be no errors on the disc.
VCD/SVCD Issues included: failure to display subtitles or recognize menus and chapters on the 'Top Gun' "SVCD NTSC Sample with CVD selectable subtitles, 1 audio track, menus, chapters" and a failure to display subtitles or recognize the second audio track on the 'Alien' "SVCD NTSC Sample with SVCD selectable subtitles, 2 audio tracks". In both cases PBC was activated and the discs were recognized as requiring it (or at least "PBC ON" was displayed onscreen). Again, (X)SVCD support is not in the published specs.
MPEG 1&2 ISO, MP3, JPG:
All folders navigable and multimedia test files selectable via On Screen Display. Oddly, the MPEG1 files played back, while the VCD test disk did not. Filenames display only first 13 or 14 characters and do not scroll. Left/Right/Down buttons turn or flip images for viewing. |

Bought this player from Best Buy and really liked it at first. Picture was crisp and bright. Sound was good, although not quite loud enough. It seemed to play every DVD-R and DVD-RW I had, but as I started to use it more, I realized it had a skipping problem with every DVD after 45 minutes to a hour in. It would start freezing frames and skipping intermittently, until eventually it locked up. The only way to clear this was to power off the unit. I ended up returning the player. The problem was just too annoying.
