This is my initial impression of the player. I’ve had it for less than a week, but so far it’s great. It has a 3 disc changer which is very convenient. The unit is somewhat pricey if you just want a great DVD player that can play just about anything, but I wanted the Karaoke as well—this is the best I can find for under $400 from a reputable store.
I’ve made a handful of VCD, XVCD, SVCD and they all play. I also have a Sony DVP-S530D and a Panasonic DVD-RV30, and they are crap compared to the Pioneer when it comes to homemade VCD. Only CD-RW will work with them and they will not play SVCD at all. The Pioneer on the other hand plays on all kinds of media. It also plays them better, where on the Sony I constantly get tracking problems (I don’t use the Panasonic much for VCD, but it’s about the same as the Sony), the same VCD plays without a glitch on the Pioneer. For those who are looking for a DVD changer that will play just about anything on any media, Pioneer is the way to go. As for the V630, I would strongly recommend if you want Karaoke (basic) and a disc changer, otherwise, save your money and get a non-Karaoke Pioneer player. Note, I’ve been a Sony customer forever, but when it comes to “homemade” stuff, I stay away from Sony players.
