Sound and video quality are good, and navigation is easy. I've had the same problem as other owners with the changer repeatedly opening and closing. This problem started within the first year. My work around is to use "Exchange" instead of "Open" as this always works.
I recently purchased DVDs that won't play. I'm guessing they are a different region although they are not labeled as such (from India). They play on my computer, but my player says "invalid disc". Any ideas? I'd like to make the player region free, but it seems silly to pay for that. |

| I'm having the same issue as the previous poster. My carousel opens and shuts constantly unless I grab it and hold it while I place the disc into the tray. That used to work fine, but now I have to turn the unit off and on again after holding the carousel. Other than that, I've been extremely happy with the unit. |

I've had this dvd player for nearly two years, and have been relatively pleased with it's performance until recently. After only two years of normal use (and I don't watch television THAT often) the carousel seems to be having a problem, it extends and immediately retracts without stopping for a disc exchange. (I suppose this could happen to anyone, and may not necessarily be a problem that would occur as a result of a manufacturer's defect, etc. - just irritating!)
There were two remotes which came with the home theater (in which the dv-c505 was included) the DVD control has NO VOLUME, the other remote, which controls the receiver and dvd, includes volume, but no 'disc skip' or 'disc selection' button.... it be SO nice to be able to USE ONE REMOTE and fully utilize the 5 disc carousel- (which is now acting up)- just one more button and an ENTIRE additional remote could have been eliminated!!
I was told at the time of purchase that the player WAS region free, which i soon discovered was misinformation from the commission hungry salesman. I was afraid to try the hack listed elsewhere on the site to make the player 'region free', as I was uncertain how that would affect my current playback and features, but i have seen this exact model elsewhere online, modified and sold as a 'region free' player- at a very reasonable price. I noticed someone commented that there were no hacks available, at the time, this was true- once the second comment appeared (in the dvd hacks area), I loaded the code into a PDA, but didn't have the guts to go through with it. If anyone has tried the hack, I would be interested in learning how that worked and if you were pleased with the results. Please add comments to the 'hacks' area if you've got any more information!!!
All in all, this player is more versatile than any other I have tried as far as formats and types of discs it will recognize, I did have trouble with a set of DVD-R discs that I ordered, would play fine for a time, and then began having trouble (skipping, stalling, counter shifting forward and back) after about an hour of play. I have NO IDEA what program they used to master the discs, but I have not had similar trouble with any others.
This player is MUCH more reliable than others within my home which either don't play at all (memorex), or have decided to play in ONLY black and white (cyberhome)!! I recommend dropping the extra cash, it is well worth it...

Mine won't play -R or -RW. The manual states only -R/-RW compatibility.
I have noticed that it will play +R/+RW DVDs for about 45-50 minutes (of a 90 minute video). Then the time counter indicates that the head gets lost as it increases and decreases in erratic amounts. Also, there is quite a bit of noise coming from the device as it tries to find the track. |

| Mainly bought this to support playback of my homemade DVD+Rs, and it plays +Rs and +RWs fine. I am very pleased with this player, have not had any trouble getting it to play any commercial or homemade DVDs. The only time I had a problem was with a bad DVD+RW disc that had read errors when I tried to play it back on my PC, so that was due to bad media. It would be nice if the remote allowed you to jump directly to a disc in the changer. With this changer, you have to repeatedly press the disc skip button to get to the disc you want to play. I have tried mp3 playback to just see if basically worked, but I haven't done any thorough testing of that feature. It read the CD-R, displayed files, and played them. Overall is a nice player. |

| Unlike many people who claim that this dvd plays dvd+r/rw, mine does not. I have also tried to burn the dvd+r in iso/udf format and it still does not work. I would think that a big name player like Pioneer would support that media but it does not, at not on mine. I spoke to one of the support people at Pioneer and he said that none of their DVD player plays the dvd+r/rw format. |

I tried several CD-R and CD-RW in VCD format (mastered with Nero), as well as MP3 on CD-R, they all worked. One thing that impressed me is the picture quality on VCD is GOOD, better than I expected.
A local grocery store had it on sale for $80, seems to be a very good deal, it's a changer and a name brand, so I expect it to last longer than the low cost no-name brands.
The only thing I was hoping but did not get is the machine does NOT do jpeg slide shows, I have CD-Rs full of jpeg files but they are not readable. Someone on this forum actually said it does support jpeg, can you tell me if I can change some settings to get this work. If it does jpeg slide show, this machine will definitely get a 10 out of 10!! |

I purchased this unit as I needed another DVD player. My last one was a Pioneer C503 changer (previous model to this one) which now resides in my other room.
This and the c503 are about the best players you'll find for DVD-R/CD-R/etc media and other formats. It simply plays everything tossed at it.
Discs I've tried thus far on this C505:
DVD-R: Ritek G03, LeadData, Opto
DVD-RW: TDK, Maxell.
CD-R: Fuji, Yamaha, Ritek, and some no name brands.
CD-RW: Sony
All play back flawlessly.
The only odd thing about this player is with SVCD. You need to go into setup and set your TV type to 16:9 to get the proper perspective. Not a big deal, takes all of 5 seconds to do. However, the C503 didn't require it.
SVCD, VCD both play back without a problem.
DVD Authoring software used: DVD Maestro, Adobe 6.5, Pinnacle, DVD2One.
DVD & CD Burning software used: Nero - latest.
DVD's were burned at 2X and 1X and CD's at 8X.

This DVD Player plays .jpg files from CD-R and CD-RW disks , a feature I really like.
As mentioned above it is sometimes necessary to play with your tv setting to adjust the picture from some SVCD's. (I have had to switch from 4:3 letterbox (normal setting) to widescreen).
My first DVD player was a sony DVP-NS415. I replaced it because it does not play SVCD and is single disk. I love having the 5 disk changer, especially for SVCD, but also for CD's.
The only advantage of the sony was it has Line IN where I fead my VCR through the DVD play to the home theater system. The Pioneer does not have this. |

| This is a great DVD player for the money. I have tested DVD-R/RW and DVD+R/RW Verbatims, Riteks, Princos, Samsung(BeAll), Optodisk, and TDK. They work great. I did notice that its more important how you burn them with this Pioneer than with a Sony 615. It needs to be UDF or ISO/UDF format. If you have either of them with Joliet it probably wont work. If your burning you dvds the correct way that shouldnt be a problem. The Pioneer has optical output unlike the Sony. I tested CDR/RW and they also work fine. Mp3s work nicely too. The only thing I dont like is the mp3 menu. Its kinda tight. It makes it hard to see tracks that are long in name without going to that track(no big deal). I dont know the max bitrate but it plays highrates easily. Im very pleased with this player since my main concern was playing DVD-recordable medias of all formats. :) |

Read an article that said not to use Ifo Edit if you have a Pioneer player because it might not playback right.
I have tested a few dvd-r with DVDXCOPY and they play fine. [1 disc (dvd-5) and 2 disc (dvd-9)] I used Prino 1x dvd-r's. (good ol' eBay)
I made my own dvd-r and used Ifo Edit and it doesn't play back right. (I might have screwed something up, but I followed the tutorial step by step) I'm guessing that Ifo Edit warning I read somewhere is to blame.
MP3 ID3 TAG Support would have been nice. |

It plays MP3s in DATA CD-ROM ISO level 2 9660 mode 1/2 Joliet. Burned with folders, MAX 255 MP3s + Folders, and can be programed to play up to 99 mp3s in your order. (no multi session disks)
Tested with NERO, Mitsumy Cheapest CD-RW, All the cheap
media with no name on it and Memorex works. Did not tested with Green and Blue media. Did not tested with open-not closed disks.
Plays PAL & NTSC SVCD/VCDs/DVDs.
Plays all mixed disks loaded in 1,2,3,4,5 order or CD mode for music only disks.
SVCD/VCD DVD Menues work ok. I've mastered home videos
with "Sonic MY DVD" with menues and Slide shows and AVIs + MPGs MIXED... hehe.. well The My DVD did the rest... even burnt it.
JPGs must be "mastered" converted to MPG or buy the 1 disk model "DV-354" will play JPEGs plus all that this model do.
Ordered from Walmart Online only.
This was the Best price/job for my litle VCD/SVCD needs
And I am happy because my other Emerson DVD dont play VCDs at all.
Copyright Laws suck... but not my money anymore!

I purchased the DVC505 $130 (Walmart.com) and a Sony DVP-NS715P ($149 Circuit City) to compare the two and they both kicked butt. They both played DVD-R/RW, VCD, SVCD. The remote and on screen display where easy to work with.
The only problem I found with the 505 was it wouldn't play discs burnt from Nero images so I have to extract the image with Isobuster and then burn with Nero or something else. No big deal.
The only problem with the Sony was that some cdr's would say the disc was dirty and I'd have to burn a new one to get it to play even though the "dirty" one would still play on the 505.
With that small problem and the fact that the 505 is a 5 disc changer, I returned the Sony (I rate it a 9) and kept the 505. |

I've had this 5-disc DVD/CD changer for about a month now. It plays almost everything I throw at it EXCEPT Maxell DVD-RW discs.
Those Maxell DVD-RW disks work fine in my Apex-1200 and Sony PlayStation 2 so it looks like it's a firmware issue. I believe the DVR-A04 Pioneer burner got a firmware upgrade a while ago to allow it to better read Maxell discs so maybe it's time for a C505 firmware upgrade. Other Maxell discs (CD-R, 4x CD-RW, 10x CD-RW highspeed!!! and DVD-R) work great. Verbatim DVD-R/RW and Pioneer DVD-R/RW work fine also.
By the way, if you want to check which firmware (or ROM) version your unit has, do the following:
-press Setup button on remote
-select Initial settings
-scroll down until Options is highlighted
-press Display on the remote
My unit was manufactured in October 2002 and at least for me (up here in Canada), the following information should appear in the comment box:
Region 1
Rom version: 1.036_All
It's true that SVCD's get 'squashed' when your Video Output-TV Screen is set to 4:3 (since you don't have a widescreen TV). However, the workaround is to just set the TV Screen to 16:9 (Wide) enough though your TV set isn't so. Weird bug in the firmware that a few other Pioneer DVD players have!
I love the Display details (information) you get when watching DVD's. Like Elapsed, Remain and Total disc time as well as Transfer Bit Rate shown graphically and numberically superimposed over the screen in a semi-transparent bar. The VCD and MP3 Displays details are also informative. Note that to get VCD details, PBC must be turned off. This can be achieved by pressing stop TWICE after it starts playing and using the Menu button on the remote to select Track 1 and pressing Enter/Play. However, since SVCD's are not 'offically' supported by Pioneer, the Display details for SVCD disc consists only of elapsed time. Not too good!
Did I mention the GREAT MP3 interface to navigate through your folders and display long filenames as well as random selections of up to all 5 discs or within only one disc. By the way, this unit is also a VERY GOOD cd player and has an exclusive CD mode for just playing your music collection.
In summary, it has a nice appearance, very functional buttons on the unit itself, comfortable remote with almost everything that you need to control (except volume) and overall a FANTASTIC DVD/CD player!
I purchased my unit in January 2003 at Best-Buy but Costco now sells them for $99 US.
Do yourself a favour and get one. You won't be sorry!

I just bought this Player and I am returning it tomorrow. I bought it at Visions in Regina, SK, CANADA. ($210 CND/w tax). It plays SVCD very well and so does the VCDs. It it fast and changes really quiet.
I bought it to play DVD-Rs.
Plays CMC DVD-Rs - (Antitrust).
DOES NOT PLAY:
Pioneer DVD-R. (Fast and the Furious)
RITEK G03 DVD-R. (many movies, but still didn't work)
I could not believe it would not play the DVD-R that came with my Pioneer DVR-A05U burner!
I do not recommend this if you are just buying a DVD Changer that you want to play DVD-Rs.
Can anyone tell me what DVD Player plays everything...I heard the Panasonic V32K is ok...but I would like a changer.
thanks,
Gulu |
