I wanted to add that player supports DVD+R DL (look at my Memorex 8xDVD+R (RITEK...S04) report).

I Can only give it an 8/10 since it doesn't do MP3 nor XviD/DivX. But to be fair, for an old player it's pretty amazing it plays all it does.

I ordered this player off of ebay about a year ago. It worked great for about six months, then it started crapping out on playing dvd's, but still played cd's and vcd's. I assumed it was a problem with the DVD laser.

I still used it as a plain cd changer, but then that crapped out too. Ah well, it was a good run. I think though that I will be purchasing a 'new' (to me) one soon from ebay again. It was a fairly good deal I would say, but that's why it gets an 8, because it quit after only 6 months. Feature wise, definitely a 10.

update to my earlier post.

This is quite possibly the best DVD player out there for your own burned media.

I've since aquired a DVD-RW (pioneer A04).

It quite simply plays everything.

DVD-R burned by hand or with instant copy, DVD2one, DVD Maestro all play flawlessly.

I use both Ritek G03 and LeadData. Over 100 discs burned and played on this player. It's killer.

Any VCD/SVCD - on tons of media, from cheapo no-name brands to the usual suspects like fuji, yamaha, etc. Not a single failure and I've viewed at least 100 different svcd/vcd movies on them.

I own three of these players now. They are getting hard to find however.. ebay seems to be the best bet.

I've bought a few other players for other family members - other brands and not one has played back everything this flawlessly. The others include: Philips 762, JVC NV40, Apex 1200, RCA 5240P.

I wish pioneer would re-release this player. I've also not had the hardware fail on any of the three i own - and 1 of them was purchased used on ebay - the others have probably 400 hours of use.

The only thing i'd say is poor is the remote. The fast forward/reverse isn't too fast.. about 6X max.

get one.

Hmmm....that's weird 'cause my player starts to skip and freeze on DVD-R too!!! I bought it for a few months now, before today it plays fine everything I put in.

Right now Costco sell C505 (play Mp3) for $99, I wonder should I buy the C505 or jump to something else 'cause I don't want it die on my few months later like the C503.

This is my first DVD player. Bought the Pioneer dv-c503 about 1.5 years ago. After I had it for a few months it started messing up. Sent it back for repair (10 weeks) and has worked fine ever since.

I burned some VCD's with family photos using Easy CD Creator and they didn't work correctly. I tried several types of media it didn't matter. Would just stop after it read most of the tracks.

The Fastfoward and reverse don't work well at all. You have to point the remote directly at the unit.

The good is it plays all my CD-R'.
Has excellent picture quality.
Putting 5 music CD's in you have hours of listening.

Best player I've owned to date.

Previously owned: Pioneer 343 (great player as well, but the 5 discs on C503 gives it the edge).

This player so far has played:

All my VCD's and XVCD's (bit rates as high as 2500)
All my SVCD's with bit rates as high as 2700.

Plays all the various media I have, from the cheapos to my yamaha professionals.

Great player - I found one (oct/2002) at www.wholesaleconnection.com -- they are hard to find these days - took me 2 days to track one down at a reasonable price - $149 from them.

Buy this player or the 343, they both play everything you toss at it (unlike my RCA 5240P, which is somehow highly rated here).

I've had my unit for almost a year and have been very impressed with it's capabilities. I originally purchased the unit b/c of it's ability to play multiple VCD/SVCD/XVCD/XSVCD formats (in addition to standard DVDs).

I recently purchased a Pioneer DVR-104 DVD-R/RW burner, and have no reason to go back to the VCD format. DVD-R/RW is far superior and most disks play perfect in the 503. The only problem I've noticed is slightly pixelated playback using cheapo DVD-Rs (from Esbuy.com and this is most likely a media problem, not the Pioneer's). Imation DVD-Rs work great and the cheap esbuy DVD-RWs work perfect as well.

I think this unit was replaced by the 603 model. I recommend this unit to anyone who needs a 5 disk DVD player that is flexible. This unit is my main DVD player, and I have an Apex AD1100w as a second unit, which I also highly recommend.

I bought this Pioneer DV-C503 based on good reviews I found here and other places. After using it for a week, I had mixed feeling about it. First, the bad things:
1. Fast forward and backward funtions really suck. Not only are they unresponsive, there is no variable FF or FB speeds, like 2x, 4x, 8x, available on many other players.
2. Repeat A-B function doesn't work for SVCD or VCD. This is really surprising, because it works on my $80 Apex AD-500W.
3. You have work around to make it show time counter for SVCD.
I don't care for MP3 or SVCD switchable subtitles, because I don't use them that much. But I want quick, responsive FF, FB and Repeat A-B.
Now the good things:
1. 5-disc changer. You don't need to get up and change discs anymore.
2. Just about plays everything I burned, VCD, XVCD, SVCD, CD-R, CD-RW, and of course, DVD. The picture quality of DVDs is excellent, SVCD and VCD are good and smooth, but not necessarily better than other players I have seen.
Bottom line is if you want a 5-disc changer that plays just about everything, this is the one to consider. Beware that it lacks in some very useful functionalities.

This has very good VCD/SVCD support. XVCD/XSVCD seem to require lower bitrates (the examples on this site are to high). DVD playback is very good except there is a noticeable pause between layers, this varies from imperceptible to audio completely cuting out and restarting and/or video pausing for a split second. The five disc changer is wonderful. Multi-disc sets or entire series can be loaded up and viewed one after the other without pause.

I've had mixed results with the VCD auto switching feature, sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. However, based on others comments, I believe this may result from the manner in which the movies are started.

I wish it supported MP3 CDs and Photo CDs. Firmware upgrade, maybe? MiniDVD would be nice too. The lack of support for SVCD subtitles is also bothersome.

Multi-region hacks and/or Macrovision hacks would be great. Anybody know any?

Rated it a 9 for the lack of .mp3 playback ability, but that's the only thing I could come up with as far as 'negatives'. I don't need/use any of the other features that some have cited it lacking, but it has all the major ones (except mp3, which I'm not sure I'd use anyway). The quality of the (S)VCD's are magnificent, I've never had a *proper* one go out of synch or skip, and the picture is noticeably better.

The first unit I bought was a lemon, but after an exchange I've been totally satisfied with the player. It has 5 discs, and will automatically change discs (only advances one disc though) if you start your disc by pressing >>(next)>> button. One GREAT feature that I use a lot is the "Resume" feature. If you stop a movie during playback for whatever reason, you can pick up right where you left off upon restarting the movie (even if power was turned off). Overall the best player I've ever used (had 4).

I got this player 2 weeks ago at Costco for $149 since it was show model. I have not had any problems what so ever. I bought a Apex ad-1100w a week before but since it did not support SVCD chapters it had to go back. The Pioneer DV-C503D has played every dvd rip i have put in it plus its a 5 disc. Buy Pioneer =)

Picked up this unit at a local CostCo for $179 because I heard it could play SVCDs. I've tested some VCD, SVCD on CD-R and CD-RW media and they both play fine. I did notice on one of my SVCDs that I burned faster than 4x that there was a stutter in a few scenes. The ones that I know I burned at 4x all played fine. It was also able to play a 1.6Mbps VCD that I downloaded. It plays movies on DVD-R and DVD-RW just fine. Video quality is quite good compared to the Sampo I was using earlier. Only negative for me on this unit are the FF and Reverse search function are lousy. There are no variable speed scans like 2x, 4x, or 16x FF. I will try a few tests on some odd-ball formats that I doubt work. But overall this is a very good player. If you want a multi-disc unit that can play all the standard formats (VCD/SVCD/DVD) at a good price this unit is it.

I love this 5-disc player. I bought it when I hadn't even heard of VCD's and it turned out great! It plays, pauses, rewinds, fast-forwards, repeats, programs through all 5 discs, etc... Just like any normal DVD's. With some good quality divx's which I turned to VCD's using Nero, I can't tell the difference if it is DVD or VCD. I am now trying to create some cool graphical menus for my new movies. Okay, so I can't play MP3's? What's the use of playing them through a Video player?? That's what my stereo is for? Right? Maybe in a couple of years I'll put some money in for an all in one mp3, divx, and dvd-r. But for now, I will enjoy my 40+ downloaded movies on my dvd player!!!

WOW. I "had" a Panasonec DVD-RV32. I could see the SVCD movie but it was horribly choppy with a kina bad picture. So i took it back and got a Pioneer DV-C503.
------Its awesome----------
It played all my DVDS, vcds and SVCDs perfectly and with an amazing picture. The sound wasnt lagging or choppy. Everything worked perfectly. And I love not having to get up to change the damn cds. 8o] It also took a wide range of CD-Rs. I used imatron, verbatims, memorex, hypermedia, and a couple others. They all worked great.

It also did PBC very well on my vcds and svcds. I liked being able to scan through the movie real quick.

The only reason I didnt give this a 10 is because it wont play subtitles and wont play mp3s. (But who needs to do that? Use tha dam computer)

I just hope this thing lasts me a long time. I highly recommend it.

bought this player as i wanted a changer that could play vcd/svcd/dvd and audio cds as well. only thing lacking is mp3, and i use my computer for that, so no prob.

i think this is discontinued now, i lucked out and got it right before. so good luck finding one.

after experimenting with all types of vcds/svcds (pretty much everything works as long as you don't go too high on the bitrate) i've settled on "standard" svcds from 2 - 3 discs depending upon length. PBC on vcd/svcd works great, although if you just hit next to play a disc, it disables PBC and will automatically go to next disc (nice!) or you can just push the disc button. much easier than changing discs.

basically, i'm very happy and highly recommend

I like this player. I have burned all kinds of SVCDs at all kinds of resolutions, and they play great. I use CD-RW for test runs, tweaking encoding etc. I was VERY happy to see this player will play CD-RW just fine. Saved me a bunch of money so I can use expensive media for the final burn. For CD media, this thing will play just about anything.

When you hit 3000kbps on the MPEG video though, CHOP-CHOP. I'm guessing it only plays at 2X for CDs, so I would recommend capping the bitrate at 2500. I like to use slightly lower bitrates at lower resolutions. This seems to yield pretty good quality. I encode my MPEGs with TMPEGEnc using the very-high quality motion-search. It takes along time, 7 minutes or so per minute on my 1.4 Athlon, but the video quality pays off in dividends. Audio I just keep 128kbps becuse the mic on my camcorder sounds like ass anyway, so why waste bitrate on that?

Unit tested is Pioneer DV-C503, a 5 disk changer. Price was $199 at Sears, but this model is being discontinued.

Every VCD worked, even the ones I recorded onto Memorex Black CDR media. SVCDs all worked, even ones recroded at 24X recording speed (the fastest my recorders will write).

Now for something I didn't expect. I placed a PAL SVCD (created using Nero / TMPegEnc) and it played flawlessly. Also, it advances from one SVCD to the next automaticly without even telling it to. Change time is approx 6-10 seconds. I was expecting to have to program it or press a button on the remote, so I was VERY happy when it all just automaticly happened.

No MP3 support, but I have more MP3 players than I can count anyway, so this wasn't important to me.

Picture quality is stunning, a large improvement over my Apex 600A, and a medium improvment over my Sony Set-top DVD (can't remember model #) player and my Sony PS2.

Actually, SVCDs and VCDs play so darn well on this thing, I doubt I will ever need XVCD or XSVCD. It's nice to know from the other reviews of this unit that it has that ability, though.

Again, this unit is being discontinued. I can only hope the next generation of this unit will live up to this ones quality.

All CD-R media has been (With the exception of the Memorex Black CDRs) bulk 100 pack CDRs bought whereever they were cheapest. Even played back DVDs with finger prints that the Apex choked on.

I still can't believe it played back a PAL SVCD so perfectly. This unit truely rocks!

I have had this player for about a month now. It works great it will play anything that i need as i dont have a dvd-r drive which i consider pointless cuz the cds cost the same as real dvds and the writer is 900 bucks canadian. plays all my svcds/vcds and it plays some x(s)vcds that i threw at it regardless of the media i used. I suggest this player to anyone who gets a lot of (s)vcd's and wants great dvd playback with surround sound.

Comments:
Would be a 10 except it died after 3 months of low usage. However, warranty worked great. Did not pay a penny, and it has been flawless ever since.
