Just confirmation that this player plays SVCDs with the VCD header hack. Once done the image and sound quality is great.

VCD header hack instructions (as link above)
http://www.vcdeasy.org/modules.php?name=_Guides&id=VcdTrick

NOTE:
When using these instructions I got very bad lip sync and a crackling sound. I found to fix this you have to multiplex using the "MPEG-1 VCD" setting and not the "MPEG-1 VCD non-standard" setting as the instructions say. All other steps are the same.
When multiplexing using this setting you get a warning about dropped packets but it still plays fine.

Let's make this comments section a sandwich:

First the good:

DVD's are absolutely wonderful, obviously the player has all the normal outputs on the back, in plentiful supply. I continue to be impressed with this unit. Watching Resident Evil NTSC on my PAL TV the other day was so good, I didn't really care about the unoriginal plot. Sound output is great when put through a decent amplifier.

Often , I see posts from people getting excited about playing mp3's, wma's etc on their dvd player. These are the people that buy players that can be easily hacked.

Whilst I sometimes wonder if these people have ever watched a DVD on a player that isn't much more capable DVD-wise than a PS2 - in quality terms, I can understand the advantage of easy hacking to make a player multi-region/macrovision free. There are no hacks for any of the Pioneer machines. I don't know why but it certainly reflects badly on Pioneer - who do they think they are? If I'm paying out this much cash for a DVD player, don't I deserve region selection via a simple hack?

Having said this, the player can be upgraded via re-programming. You bring the unit to a dealer, they do something technical with it using a PC or similar, then you leave with a multi-region and Macrovision free player. Thing is, this service cost £40, takes just a few minutes (lets say 5 minutes), which equates to £480 per hour! Now, I know it's not fair to calculate the cost this way but it just demonstrates how ridiculous the price is + there's no actual physical item you're getting here...I won't complain anymore.

GOOD NEWS!

You can play XSVCD on this machine! The technique is already given in one of the other user comments for this machine but I'll briefly explain...

Use TMPG Enc to create a standard MPEG-2 file. When it's finished, go to the first menu at the top, then select MPEG TOOLS. It has a field that says something like 'video input file' and 'audio input file'. If you open an mpeg-2 file that has video and audio, both fields will automatically be filled. NOW - THE IMPORTANT PART!

Where it says 'MPG2 System VBR' or similar, click and change this to MPEG-1 Video CD (non-standard). Don't worry, you're not changing the actual quality of the MPEG-2 file. This process simply rewrites the 'header' of the MPEG-2. When the DVD player initialises the disc, it reads the header to determine whether it's an audio/vcd/dvd/photo CD. If you fool the DVD player into thinking this file is a VCD...well you get the idea!

Er., I forgot to say that you've got to 'select output file' and then click 'run' to create the file. I think the other guy that mentioned this, actually made it simpler in 10 lines than I have in 30!

Overall, a worthy purchase - but remember, no hack and THAT will sure 'HACK' you off! Ho, ho ho!

BTW - that copy of Resident Evil was Region 1. It played just fine in my Region 2 player - no idea how & why. I have a music dvd that is also region 1 - that works too. Sadly, Tomb Raider and Changing Lanes DONT work. Grrr.

T8 care people

Quality is wonderfull,

However you need to use best softwares and time ti create good videos (e.g.: CCE 250 , TmpGenc...)
I use many CD-R and CD-RW, up to 90 mn (900 Mo).
I also use DVD+RW HP and Philips.

VCD encoded in VBR are very good
XVCD encoded 1600-2400 can make an 1 Hour very good
disc.

But.... No SVCD.

I have tested the tip on: http://www.geocities.com/newestmoviesencode/dvdvcd
-----------------------------------------------------
1. Open TMPGEnc and goto FILE>MPEG TOOLS and click on the Simple Multiplex tab.
2. Click Browse for video input and select your movie.
3. Be sure that the type is MPEG-1 Video-CD
4. Select you output file.
5. Click Run. This will take 5-10 min maybe more depending on video size and speed of your computer.
6. Now just burn to CD useing Nero or any other burning tool that will burn VCD's
-----------------------------------------------------

With a VCD header an SVCD plays fine on the Pioneer-737. :-D

Have tried to play DVD-R and DVD-RW videos DVDs edited with Matrox/Sonic softwares, burned with Pioneer A03; are played on computers, dont work at all on several Pioneer 737 players tested. No compatibility at all - even if it is asserted by Pioneer.

This DVD unit is GREAT !!!

Sad but true is that it doesn't support SVCD, XSVCD.
This information is obtained from Pioneer Sweden after many hours of frustration trying to make the machine play SVCD of my own.

XVCD however works good.

I love this machine despite the lack of SVCD support, the quality of Audio and DVD stunning!!

I’ve got negative results playing SVCD CD-RW on my PIONEER DV-737, encoded from captured home video by TMPEng 2.0, and burned with VCDImager & Fireburner 2.1.1. I’ve tried three various settings for writing the CR-RW (with & without “update scan data offsets” and with and without “add empty SEGMENTS”. The player recognizes discs as CDs and the counter starts counting as if it is playing but no sound and no image appears. I also tested it with a factory-made VCD and it plays it pretty well. I even would say that the picture is better than in my VHS VCR (a 4-years old SONY, do not remember the model).

I think the previous post is correct. A SVCD that played fine on my Pioneer DV-C603 would not play in my co-worker's Pioneer DV-737.

I don't think this player supports SVCD format.

the unit is STUNNING! everything one would want plus progressive scan and 3:4 drop down.
It will play any CDR music cds, but when it comes to VCDs it will only works with high quality (like Taiyo Yuden). So far all the cdrw's i've used have work.
VCDs have never looked so good. WOW! i was watching the cell dvd rip and it looked soooooooooooooo good!
