| purchased to play Mpeg4 discs as well as my commercial buys when my Zensonic 300 died. Really very pleased with image quality. Noticeable improvement over the Zensonic on MP4 (these are generic, not Divx) with much greater image detail and colour range/balance. One of the few MP4 players on market that has a 12 bit video DAC so perhaps that is the reason. Very, very happy with it. Purchased at Harvey Norman (you should be able to get it cheaper) as salesperson hooked it up in show room and let me try different disks to make sure it did handle the MP4s. Of course it is region free (this is the norm in Aust.) |

nifty lil player and akthough only having had it a little while i have run many discs thru it now and all seems well
video is a stepup from the cheapies ive had before and MPEG4 looks much better directly thru the TV than PC to TV ...so far anyways ill be doing a lit more testing and report a lil more in nect few weeks
i decided to apply the firmware hack by GUFIAK on softpedia DIVXperts forum for the 588 model and have had no problems with a few packed bitsteam files ive tested but only time will tell ....although still cannot get >OGM or .OGG or either of those renamed to .avi to work in it even with the hacked firmware , video works , no audio at all and then player freezes up and can only be "depowered" to resume control over it so be wary , but now ill just have to use the knowledge gained here about converting .OGM to .AVI with subtitles so mmy girlfriends anume is watchable ;) |

I am only now having an issue with divx/xvid/avi/mpeg. These formats worked well previously, however now whenever I try to play one of these formats, the PIONEER logo goes from Red to greyscale, and the entire picture is now greyscale and grainy.
It only returns to normal when I insert a DVD and start to play it.
At first I thought this might have been a codec issue, but I get the same problem with a disc that I watched flawlessly not more than 1 week ago.

Played my DVD-R and DVD+R DL just fine - both are "RIDATA" (RITEK G04)
Also played most of my Xvid/Dvix files fine. The few that wouldn't play I will assume are "packed bitstream".
I would agree that the lack of a random play function for MP3s is a little disappointing. Same goes for photo viewing - would like to see more options there.
Other than that, this is my first Divx-enabled player and overall I'm pleased. |

|
| Comments: |
Pros:
+ great picture and sound quality
+ convenient graphical menu and remote control
+ well built
Cons:
- doesn't play well DivX with "packed bitstream"
- no Random playback for MP3 files
- doesn't show File Navigator upon loading DVD full of DivX files - need to press Menu button.
- No advertised "3 Years Warranty for Home Entertainment DVD" for this and DV383 player.
Summary:
No support for "packed bitstream" DivX/XviD files - plays them jerky. There are other players that plays such files smoothly. Dissatisfied :( |

AU$185 Trustcott Hifi Morphett Vale S.A.
In the DVD play back Area and audio I cant fault the player.
It has big problems though with Xvid (especially) and Divx play back. the player has a bad habit of going into slow motion whilst audio stream is fine then does a video catch up uslually at a point of fast screen action scenes. also it has a tendancy to display a croma problem on the left side of certain images, manly faces.
Also it doesnt go directly to the disc menu when loading Xvid/Divx which is anoying. All apear to be fix able with a firmware fix, but an email i recieved back from pioneer Aust. basicaly implied they will not be addressing these issues. |

These should be the correct specifications as my last post missed a few.
After playing with it a few weeks now great player. New media menu now has no problems playing a combination of media files. Ie mp3/wma/mpg/jpg on same media. Havent tried dvd+r dl yet. Hard to find. but I'm guessing should support if anybody can confirm this. As the pioneer PC DVD burners were first to support dvd-r dl burning.
Both pal and ntsc progressive scan.
Bass mamagement support for Dvd-Audio / SACD
Can play Mp3/wma audio whilst watching jpg picture slide show
Picture support zoom function.
plays mpeg/dvix/xvid media videos only (not wmv/mov etc) any format and resolution. |

Paid $190. Australian. Same as the USA model DV-588A-S. Good value for money.
Also plays dvd-audio and sacd but not hdcd.
Plays everything you throw in it. Only had it for a short whiLe. Nice and compact in size. No media brower support for Audio CD's. but can play sacd/dvd-a with optical out in 2 channel mode.
Now supports mixed mode cd's through media browser menu. Ie A combination Mp3/wma/jpg/mpg etc media files all on the one cd or dvd. |
