Hi guys, I don't know if it occured to you as well, but I thik this problem occurs after modding the dvd player with palm. I made it a lot of time ago to make it region free and it was completely succesfull. I didn't realize any inconveniece but a few months ago.
I bought some sacd and I tried multichannel features with 2 stereo amps and speakers. With DVD it worked fine, but with SACD it seems no sound was getting out the surround speakers. I made few tests and no luck. Then I didn't investigate further as I didn't have a multichannel amp.
Then I'm buying one and this problem suddenly popped out in my mind. I read an article from another user who had similar problems with same player who was already modded.
Does any other of you happened to have the same problem? Did you solve it by any chance?
Please let me know!! My address is mario@emmedici.com

This is a very good player but has a few flaws.
The video quality is excellent!!! crisp and clear!!
It plays every kind of disk I put in it. I tested cdr/rw's burned as vcd/svcd and every one played flawlessly. These were on all different types of media from the most expensive to the cheapy no name disks. Some were burned with nero and some with easy cd and burned on different burners liteon/plextor. I only have a few homemade dvd's but they played fine also.
The sound quality for vcd/svcd/cd mp3 is very good but when I play dvd's the sound level is noticeably lower. I have to almost max out the volume on my receiver to get the volume I would normally hear at around 50-60%. This is a huge drawback!!! I disabled the "trusurround" feature and this helped to increase the sound level a bit but it's still way to low. I checked troubleshooting in the manual and it says that "sound levels from cd to dvd may be noticeably different due to different audio formats. This is normal and is not a malfunction." hmmmmmm I don't know about that. I have played these same dvd's on my other Pioneer player with no sound level problems at all.
The main reason I bought this player was for it's mp3 capabilities. It will play any bit rate you throw at it as VBR is supported. I started with 128 and it sounds close to cd quality than i went down from there to as low as 96kbps and this low quality played even
though the playing time was screwed up but this is common for low bit rate files. Next I tested some at over 360kbps (the highest I would ever use) and these were not a problem for it either. but It will not play wmv files.
From what I had read this would support ID3 tags but I was very disappointed to find out it did not. Although It does support long filenames on the monitor but only the first 8 digits on the actual units display.
according to the manual DVD-Audio and SACD is supported but I have not tested this yet. I think I may have the European version of the player as I had heard that the US version will not play these formats. I am not really sure how to tell.
This is a nice looking unit but is a bit larger than my slim Pioneer DV-444. I noticed that the cd tray is much quieter when you open/close it. I don't like the counter as you can't display "time remaining" without it appearing on the screen all the time. (can't get rid of it) It must be on elapsed to get it off the screen. This is very annoying to me but I guess is just a minor glitch.
Like the majority of remotes this one sucks also. It's just a standard soft touch with no backlighting. I hate the fact that it has no tv controls, I have to pull out my big tv remote every time to switch from tv/video. However I just discovered that my old Pioneer remote will work on this unit and it has more features.I have one more gripe with the remote, You have to aim almost directly at the unit for for it to work. I have a habit of aiming directly at the tv (which is adjacent to the player) and now I can't do that anymore.
Just another small annoyance I guess but these all start to add up if you know what I mean.
It will play PAL/NTSC but you cant view it without a converter. I bought an external converter to take care of this. I also had it modified to play all regions.
The setup and navigation menus are very easy to use.
overall this is great high end player.
Even with all the drawbacks I give it a 8 out of 10

This is an awesome player, while I have not tried everything (don't have dvd burner) it played almost everything I threw at it. It plays various types of VCDs and SVCDs, and it also plays anamorphic (S)VCDs, which is great, because you can crop the black bars and save some bitrate and encode it with an AR flag, works flawlessly. MP3s works great, and while the time display is kinda screwed up when using VBR MP3s, this is not a major problem, since it plays them with no problems at all (audio-wise). It sucks that the american version doesn't support SACDs, but the DVD-A (I have one) works great, awesome quality!
Very highly recommended. |

I have to load my DVD-R's like 10 times before it actually reads it and plays. Very annoying.
I'm using the Sony 14A drive with 1.0d firmware, and burning ritek g04 discs. I took a couple of my burns up to ultimate electronics, and they played fine in a couple apex machines and a JVC machine. I guess I'm just dissappointed because I paid $200 a while back because this thing was supposed to have very good compatiability with DVD backups, and now that I've finally bought a DVD burner, my player isn't real happy with the backups I'm making. |

Just once in a 'Blue Moon' along comes a piece of technology that confounds the usual 'you get what you pay for' scenario.....this is it!!.
The Pioneer DV-656 has so much Hi-Tech in one small box, at such a low price level it's almost unbelievable.
It's been in my possesion now for about 3 months and combined with a Philips 32PW9617 'pixel-plus' TV, offers a picture like you will only usually see in professional video editing suites.
My only concern is not with the player, but with som of the DVD-A's I've purchased, (Fagens 'Nightfly', Yes 'Fragile', Fleetwood Mac's 'Rumours' and Steely Dan's latest. Plus Pink Floyd's 'Dark Side... on SACD). There is NO common standard for Menu architecture, even among the same formats!!. I think this is no less than a travesty of common sense and look foreward to the day the record companies finally get their authoring act together.
Finally I did notice one reviewer (dutchparadox)I think, stating the the player has a handset Macrovision 'Fix'? I'd love to know what that is....PLEASE.
However, whatever you do, get the UK/European version of this player,DVD-A and SACD compatible, it will keep you future proofed for the forseable future.

Hi there,
I really like this player. Bought it about 2 weeks ago in the netherlands. So far almost everything I tried worked on this machine. The only thing that didn't work was DVD-MP3. Some of the other commentwriters in here, said that it did. Well, it didn't work on my machine. If anyone has the solution for this to work, mail me.

| Plays everything, just one problem with PAL svcds. I worked out a fix though, if you set the player to PAL only mode (hold forward when switching on the machine and it will cycle between auto, NTSC and PAL each time you do it) it will play them fine. |

Problem with VCD, it plays some of them in a Wide Screen format although I have set it from menu to play in 4:3 LetterBox. Since I use 4:3 TV part of the image is cut off and the picture is stretched vertically. I tried the same VCD on Pioneer 353 and it worked fine. Also same VCD played fine on Sony player. I don't know what's wrong.
If you have any advice please email me at: vbishtei@hotmail.com

This is a ok dvd player as far as what you get goes, but the north amarican version doens't like svcd's that are in pal format for some odd reason, for the life of me it will not play them. it skips back to the begining of the disc over and over again and the screen goes crazy.
it does play svcd ntsc perfectly and pal vcd's but not the svcd versions.
as far as dvd players goes I liked my sony better for it's remote but I can't live with this remote control over the fact it plays so many formats and mp3 cd's and burned audio discs. |

This player is the best combination of quality in sound and picture on all media (those y have tryed) for a reasonable price. The fact that the sound of this player is of wery good quality, which gives old CDs new life, makes this player unique.
The only thing y am dissapointed with is that the player is locked to region 2 (y never understanded the meaning with the regional incoding...). But this is a minor disavantage and it kan be taken care of for 50 dollars.
Y recommend this player highely. |

I have the european version, the 656A-S which is more expensive but, considering that it plays also SACDs it is really good value for money.
It reads practically everything and it gives great performances with both DVD-Audios and SACDs but the best results are obtained with multichannel SACDs. Hearing a SACD on the 656A-S, for the first time a multichannel sound was able to match the audio quality a stereo CD sound, adding to it a spatial depth. |
