| This applies to DV626-D UK bought, multi-region chipped. NTSC and PAL DVD's both play fine. (I believe USA bought machines are NTSC only, which is not uncommon.) CD-R, DVD-R, DVD-R DL all play fine. Not tried anything else. Excellent picture quality with plenty of outputs including optical and decoded DTS. |

| I've had this player for years and love it, quality is great and the compatibility has been great. However it will not play DVD+R Dual layer discs. I know the disc is ok as my Sony DVD recorder plays it fine. |

| This DVD Player, played VCD, in PAL and NTSC format. Tried SVCD in NTSC failed. Tried SVCD with VCD header trick, PAL played perfectly crisp but only half the screen. Tried lower resolution SVCD with the heard trick 448 x 352 same problem, only filled half the screen. Played XVCD perfectly, tried up to 1800kbs. The CDRs I tested on were the cheapest you could buy. |

I have burned still picture with Nero 5.5.9.14
It works perfectly (even menu) but only if you burn in NTSC format !
It works also when burned with VCDeasy (don't forget to put NTSC format before burning)

I have the champagne gold Pioneer DV-626D (Australian version) with multi-region/macro chip.
Contrary to the experiences of the other reviewers, I have not been able to get XVCD to work on the Pioneer DV-626D, thus I am writing this report to contradict other comments.
Tested with XVCD 1800 and 2200 bitrates; XVCDs were created using TMPGEnc, TSVC, and Nero Burning ROM. It is unable to play the XVCDs, showing no picture and unable to decode audio. Also tested with VideoCD with menu and chapters screen. It is also unable to display the main menu with still pictures, so the VideoCD created with NeroExpress cannot play on this player. VCDs created with TSVC work but do not display main menu.
VideoCDs created with VCDeasy can't play on this player. Super VCDs cannot play. |

| It _does_ work with XVCD. The problem is that if you do not use the correct resolution the image will be squeezed somewhat. I currently use 720 x 480 at 2500 bitrate for XVCD of anime episodes. That means the player actually spins vcd at 2x.

My player will play about any CD-R media I use & I have confirmed that it will play Plasmon 1x, Accu 1x & DVDPro(Grade A) 1x without any problems(burned on a Pioneer DVR-105).
Hope this helps!

You can play SVCD's when do following:
Use TMPEG. Under MPEG tools select the mpeg file you want to convert. Then change the type of mpeg stream to MPEG1 Video CD. Then rename the output file and select run. Takes about 5 to 10 minutes. Now the player knows the CD as VCD and plays the SVCD perfectely. |

| A fine player but, getting old. Is it possible to add extra features to the player by upgrading firmware, i.e Mp3 support, SVCD and so forth. If so, where to obtain the firmware?. |

Best player!
Play every CD-R/RW, VCD Yes (PAL/NTSC), SVCD No, XVCD with some resolution problems (not further investigated).
I finally could burn Photo CD (VCD H-Res Still images), but it only works with NTSC, no PAL!!!
Burned with Nero. |

My 626 (i actually have both a 515 and a 626 and this report aplies to BOTH) is a Region 3 Modified to play all regions. It is the Champagne color box. DVDs play without a SINGLE problem.
I have an enormous amount of VCDs, either originals in their factory pressed state, or copies of originals (some copied at 6x using a PC - on all makes of CDR) and also DVD2MPG squeezer VCDs (which look absolutely amazing) and they all run perfectly. The only thing you dont get (which you get on standalone VCD players) is the menu system built into the discs - but that doesnt matter because you can use the player remote (or the buttons on the front of the DVD player itself) to access the chapters (ie - trailer or movie segment, etc).
Top tip: when playing VCDs, instead of pressing "PLAY" on your remote or on the DVD player - press the "1" button - which will play the VCD from the beginning and also will display the "time and current chapter" on the DVD Backlit disply. If you simply press "PLAY" all you see on the DVD player is "PBC PLAY" and you dont know what chapter you are watching or how far into the movie you are. |
