I am sorry to put a poor rating on the player which has been excellant for the most part. This rating is due to Pioneer's policy of requiring Canadians to send the player back to Ontario for firmware upgrades that are done locally in the States. Why is our loyalty not important here? Why should I buy any other Pioneer product when they won't stand behind their dvd players.

I have a home theater, built for the purpose, I am a music fan in my car and was proud to use Premier products but paying freight and loss of use for a simple firmware upgrade on a cheap player is rediculas. Please retract my earliar positive posting.

Ok, I haven't used this player for long, and haven't tried every format there is to try, but this player is simply great.
the DVD-A / SACD playing is perfect; the Pal-NTSC conversion goes without a hitch. Having the 5.1 outputs already decodified as RCA jacks is something new, which can turn out handy. It's very easy to use, has some nice features and most importantly the playing is smooth.
Definitely recommended

argentinian users: it's really cheap in mercado libre or de remate.

Regarding Paulo's comment: this player CAN play Divx/Xvid, provided it is loaded with the DV-575 firmware hack. It had problems playing a Metallica's Black Album DVD-Audio; it plays it only when played as regular DVD player (not DVDAudio), which sucks. I tried another DVD-Audio title, which worked allright. One caveat, though; DVDAudio (5.1) and SACD DO NOT work through the optical output, which sucks big time, I believe.
Also, it didn't play correctly a copy of a DVD title in a Memorex DVD+R DL media; it played the main title, but not the extras.
More test are needed with DL media. It plays all sorts of media I threw at it: DVD-R, DVD-RW, DVD+RW, from Princo, Philips, Smartbuy and HP brands.

Replaced a CyberHome 500 which had all the bells and whistles that I thought a player should have with this Pioneer DV-578A unit, and what HUGE difference in Quality between the two units! The Pioneer DV-578A is hands down the BEST DVD player for the money of any that I have looked at and researched... I just wish I had the Monitor/TV to use all it's features to the Max!
I have a Top of the Line Yamaha RX-V2500 A/V receiver that will REALLY let the Pioneer DV-578A's Audio system impress folks about a Mile away if I want it to, and let you feel right "IN" the movie or concert hall for listening to music... Going after the Monitor/TV next!

I've owned several pioneers (still have 2 hooked up.
Previous pioneers include: dv343, c503, c505.

Pioneer does one thing very well - plays just about
anything. Cheap media, expensive media, cdr/rw, dvd-r/rw, etc.

I've tested several brands of CD-R's - all worked
in both VCD and SVCD formats.

I've tested several brands of DVD-R's - all worked,
however the majority of my collection are Ritek G03's
or G04's. Not a single hiccup yet.

video quality is excellent. It's got a 104mhz 12 bit
DAC - not something you see at this price point.
Higher sampling rate and more dynamic bit range =
better quality.

Has all the usual outputs: component, svideo, rca,
and optical audio.

You can't beat this player for $99 bucks that
best buy is selling it for now.

Works fine! Plays all my DVD-R and DVD+RW even my cheap's one. The picture quality is correct and the sound is good for the prize. Remote controls is easy to use but no volume control.

I've had Sony DVP-S530D for 5 years and the sound and picture quality is similar, but the Pioneer has less option's setting for the 5.1 channels

Great Buy!

Let's put it this way, this DVD player does the job, in many cases as good as more expensive units. Don't expect any innovations from 563 here (sound quality has degraded a bit in my opinion). Most of the movies I have (besides divx which, of course, it won't play) are vcds or dvd-r. Played all of them with no problem, even those, I considered broken (would not play in any other non-computer dvd player). Tried dvd+r without any problems. Tried multiple commercial dvds including russian ones. No problem here as well. I guess from quality to price prospective, this is almost as good as it gets. If you need more compatibility, then be prepared to sacrifice the quality.

Great player for the money. I was looking for player that plays DVD-mp3 and DVD-WMA files and pioneer DV-578a was the answer. For me the DVD-Audio and SACD is a bonus.
Easy to follow navigation menu.
Overall satisfied with the player performance.

This is replacing my Toshiba sd3109. It plays DVD-R flawlessly. (Using Memorex 4X so far. The only problem I have had with the machine is trying to fit Apocalyps Redux 3hrs and 20 mins on one disc. It runs out of bitrate in the last half hour.

Music is great and I finally can listen to SACD as well as DVD-A. Even regular cd's sound great.

I just bought this player because my old Hitachi wouldn't play anything with a high digital content (Star Wars ep 1&2, Monster's Inc, Spiderman etc..) or any of my homemade dvd-r's, which was very frustrating. I read a lot of reviews of this and similar products and I finally decided to give it a try and I LOVE IT. It has played everything I have put in it. Star Wars ep1&2 have never played so beautifully, my dvd-r's made on my imac (which had a Pioneer recorder in it) play flawlessly with no skipping or garbled sections (I have used expensive 4x Apple dvd-r's and Compusa's 1x dvd-r cheapies and they both played great), jpeg cd's work great and you can even put them on slideshow mode to watch your pictures like a movie. I haven't tried any SACD's (I don't own any) but I thought the audio was great on all of the dvd's I tried. It also played my VCD from Maylasia with no problems.

Converts 16:9-enhanced PAL to NTSC perfectly. Only outputs NTSC, however. Manual explicitly states that it will not play SVCD, however mine definitely will.

I had great hopes for this player, but I was rather disappointed. After a week of evaluation, I sent it back to Crutchfield and bought a Sony 665 changer for the same price - now that I have two Sony changers, I know that other players will always be measured by them.

Pros:
- Played every format I put in (except for DVD-Audio, as I don't have any), including "asian release" X-Files DVDs, which would lock up in other players.
- Multi-channel playback of SACD "Dark Side Of The Moon" was very cool.

Cons:
- Numerous "No Disc" errors with store-bought movies; opening & closing tray would sometimes solve the problem.
- Picture quality not nearly as good as my older Sony 655 changer or failing Sony 560 single disc that the Pioneer was meant to replace.
