Great player, movie's look and sound great.
I really enjoy the DVD Audio multichannel & SACD Multichannel. But I'm very disappointed that every DualDisc with "Advanced Resolution" DVD Audio on the DVD side will not play on this player. I have taken the same DualDisc's to a Yamaha Universal Player and it works great!

This is an extended review since I have now had a chance to use this one more.

DVD playback - Works well. The picture quality is good and it has played back DVD+R and DVD+RW discs without any problems.

CD - This unit has a good set of D/A converters (110dB SNR!) and CD sounds good.

MP3 - MP3 playback is good and this unit bascially supports all variants of normal MP3 files. My only complaint is that it has a slow response time in mp3 mode. (like a few seconds between songs)

DVD-Audio - Great DVD-A playback. I have tried about 5 or 6 DVD-A albums in it and it performs! Response time is very slow though in DVD-A playback. (as much as 5 seconds to load a new track)

SACD - Great SACD playback. I have tried about 5 or so albums and all playback well. Response time is a little faster than DVD-A. I only encountered a small interruption during the playback of a Toto IV SACD but it hasn't done so since.

All in all, this is a great player if you like movies, have a large collection of burned DVDs and CDs, or if you are an audiophile on a budget. Instead, get the DV-578 which is essentially the same as this model but also has WMA playback.

Purchased primarily as a mucic player -- it will play MP3's on DVD media in 'All' random mode. I bought a 270 for half the price, but took it back because it would not ramdom (well, it did on a standard audio disk). Back to the 563 -- the readout on the unit only shows 10 or so characters. Not only that, but there are three steps involved to see the song title/artist. Step one shows artist, two shows title, and three shows folder/track number. If you have the TV on, MOST of the artist/folder/title is shown. Not sure exactly how many characters are supported, but it's not quite enough for me. One thing I thougt interesting: if you 'skip' a song, it continues to play that song until it queues another, leaving almost no dead space in between, but if the song is allowed to play to conclusion, there is a dead space (but not agonizing long) while it searches for the next one. Seems to me that it should have selected the next one BEFORE the previous one played completely out. After all, it does display count UP and DOWN times, so it shouldn't be surprised when a song ends.

Unless you memorize precise steps, you have to have auxillary video (TV) on to get the music started in random mode. It would have been nice if there was some navigation (random, repeat, etc.) shown on the display. I must have to say that I like it. It does exactly what I wanted a DVD player to do -- be a mindless parroteer of MP3 files and play an occasional movie (it does that quite well).

I've played an SACD (Pink Floyd - Dark Side of the Moon) and a DVD-Audio (Yes - Fragile) and it worked great!

I burned several DVDs (+ and - R and RW, and DL) on a Sony DRU-700A with Ulead DVD Workshop 2 and it worked great. Media used included Verbatim DVD+R DL at 2.5x, Sony DVD+R at 4x, Memorex DVD+RW, Sony DVD-R and -RW. I've burned CD-R disks and it worked great, but the CD-RW barely worked for me the one time I tried.

I'm using progressive scanning over component video and digital audio optical for watching movies, and 5.1 multi-channel out for listening to SACD and DVD-Audio.

Overall a pretty good DVD player that handles just about anything you can throw at it.

I picked one up tonight at circuit city ($149 US). You have to look for it. They don't keep it with the other players. I found it in the AV Receiver section. Dropped in a bunch of recorded DVDs in +R format, which it is not advertised to play and guess what? Flawless. Fantastic picture, great audio, and no skipping. None. I even played media that I recorded right to the edge of the disk.

This player replaces my Toshiba 3800, which skipped like mad toward the end of almost all of my DVDs +R disks (sometimes earlier). That player also chirped like mad when playing recorded +Rs. This one is as quiet as a lamb. Finally, a drive with max format compatibility and excellent video, audio, and features. Don't take my word for it. The videophiles on the net love this one.

I did not test the player's advertised full range of formats, but this thing is also supposed to play almost every format out there. BTW, I tested using disks that were bit set.

Played DVD-R (CompUSA) which was a rip using InterVideo DVDCopy. Dual Layer DVD burned to one DVD-R. Played fine, no skips. I'll keep updating as I try new things. But DVDCopy sucks. The quality was awful because there was no easy way to remove extras I didn't want. I'll try Recode 2 next.

A great DVD Player! I got it mainly for audio as I don't even have a TV in my room. It has excellent playback capabilities. I have tried the following formats:
MP3
DVD Audio Multichannel
SACD Multichannel
Audio CD

It decodes SACD, MLP, MP3, CD, Dolby Digital, MPEG Audio, and DTS.

I wish I knew more about the video capabilities...I'll post more when I get a chance to plug it into an HDTV and watch some video.

I've come across SVCD's playing in a weird Aspect Ratio, I'm guessing Widescreen 16:9 when its selected as 4:3 Letterbox.

A simple but annoying solution is to set it to Widescreen 16:9 and it will play fine. I've left my setting that way and it seems to keep the aspect ratio correct for everything I've put in it so I'm just going to leave it that way.

I next plan to test DVD-SVCD. I'm assuming it will work since DVD-VCD did but who knows. I've also confirmed that despite the Pioneer website claiming it can play WMA CD's, it cannot.

I also confimred that it can play SVCD's on CD-RW's from CompUSA and Memorex.

This thing is great. Haven't put it through every conceivable test yet, but it has played everything I've thrown at it so far.

It played my DVD-VCD which was created with SVCD2DVD. Used SVCD2DVD to author DVD folders then burned with Nero 6. It played it flawlessly.

Played my DVD-MP3 which was also burned with Nero 6 as a ISO/UDF 1.02 disc. It does not read playlists though. The MP3's were VBR encoded with LAME 3.93 alt-preset-standard

It plays Menued/Chaptered VCD's and Menued SVCD's, don't have any chaptered SVCD's to test. And it also plays XVCD CD's.

Media tested: CompUSA DVD-R rated 1x burned at 2x
TDK 48x CD-R

Tried region 2 PAL on region 1 player. It works with progressive out put. Did not tried interlace or S-Vidoe output before the unit was returned.

When set in progressive mode, the S-Video and RCA line video are disabled.

While it works with SACD, there is no easy change from 2 ch. to multi ch. to CD layers. You have to go through setup manul to change it. Not the best setup for SACD if that format is important to you.

The unit was returned because if failed to run at a least two DVD movies. One is from a small studio and may be the problem is with the disc itself but the other one is a fresh copy of "Die another day". While this may be a just a problem for that unit only, the very fact that it failed to play correctly the ch 18 of a new copy of "Die another day" leave one to wonder. The both movies BTW plays find with my old Pioneer 414 and Sony NS755.

There is a 999 files limit for JPEG disc. It will only show partial list of files if you have more than the limit on the disc.

I tested DVD-video, SACD, audio CDs, jpg CDs, mp3 CD, VCD, and WMA CD. All worked except WMA - I'm not sure why someone said they claimed the player supports WMA, I haven't seen any such claims. I haven't had a chance to test recordable DVD formats, but will in the future. I'll also try out an SVCD when I get the chance. (The manual claims only the version for the Asian market plays SVCDs, but I'll give it a shot.)

The manual claims CBR and VBR mp3 support, but my test only included 128k CBR files.

I'm also using an All for One 8811 remote to control it and my other devices. The 0571 DVD player code seems to work for all buttons I've used so far.

There is a good thread on this player, including a lot of compatibility tests, on avsforum.com.

This player had played some home-burned discs that I haven't been able to play in any other set-top player (only the PC burner that made 'em). Didn't try DVD-Audio or SACD yet, but regular audio CD's sound very goood.

Plays a lot of stuff including the hi-res audio formats. SVCD playback requires going into the menu and changing 4:3 to 16:9 for some reason, a minor annoyance. Played a region 2 PAL disc with no hack necessary! A pretty sweet machine.

They claim it supports WMA, no support for raw MPG's. The DVD audio does work nicely, don't have any SACD's yet to test with. Does seem to play most SVCD's OK, a couple of glitches ocassionaly, will FF and RW from the remote.
It played a dvd+r movie I made better then my other players so far though it doesn't claim to support the media except for -r amd -rw.
FF and RW isn't smooth like some players.
Video playback on a normal TV was very clean, no HDTV to test with yet. It doesn't support data dvd's at all so far, just videos
I'll post updates as I figure this thing out, just purchased today :)
