| For 4 years this unit has been playing almost anything I put in it. Recently the tray has been rattling and vibrating and some disc aren't playing anymore. I'm hoping I don't have to replace it because it's been such a great player (it's going in for a service today). It plays pretty much any S/VCD you throw at it. Cost me $750 AU when I bought it in July 2000. Can you believe that? No complaints, though. A great DVD player. :) |

Actually I would rate this device as a perfect 10... but recently I started with making my own DVDs and it seems it has some problems...
several dvd+/-r won't play.. others just have jitter issues... maybe the lens needs cleaning...
makes of the dvd/rw: Leaddata Princo en Platinum.. doesn't seem to matter which I try...
although it seems that dvd+r is the better choice..
but I wouldn't recommend it for dvdrw purposes..
BUT other ppl don't seem to have the problems I have.... (mine is EU editon)
just try it out at the local shop....

| Great player plays everything I give it with quick response and no freezes, I have used princo dvd-r, Memorex dvd-r and dvd+r , plus cheap no names with no problems.Was using a Toshiba SD-1800 that played these same disk but was not as reliable had some freezing and caused me to make coasters ( I am are burning with the LGS-4081b ) I thought that the burner was the problem , I found out it was the Toshiba player. For the price and quality Pioneer gives you I think their products are hard to beat. |

I used Go-Video R6530 to make copies from VHS to DVD+R. They work fine on the original Go-Video R6530 and Apex AD-1500. Both my Pioneer DV-525 play only 59 seconds and pause. Very strange. I push the fast-forward button a little bit, then the DVD+R plays again. Then it stops after played 59 seconds. Can anyone of you explain it?

| This is the best player I have seen ever!! It will play anything you feed it! Doesn't seem to matter if its a nonstandard format or what type of media, it will play everthing!! Highly recommended! I got mine at a pawn shop for $115 Canadian. I also lucked out and got the European vesion with the NTSC/PAL optianal switch! |

I'm very happy with this player that I bought in early 2000, just to play commercial DVDs. It turns out that it plays EVERYTHING, and puts to shame the newer expensive "high end" players! CD-R, CD-RW, DVD, DVD-R, DVD+R, DVD-RW, DVD+RW. VCD and SVCD without the header trick. It accepts cheap and brand name medias. What impresses me most about this Pioneer player is that it can play a FULL CAPACITY (4.6GB) homemade movie burned on a cheap NO-NAME DVD-R! When I upgrade, I would definitely consider another Pioneer.

Looks like it prefers DVD+R .. tried a bunch of other medias that i dont rem .. most of the +R have worked but have had problems with the (cheap) -R medias .

| This is a great non-progressive player. Never had a problem with commercial DVDs. Works great with my 16:9 HDTV. I play a lot of SVCDs on it and they work great. One note: In Nero, you have to select ENTRIES.SVCD file ID: ENTRYVCD (standard) for menus to work. |

| I have tested VDC burned with EasyVCD / CDRDAO and it's working fine... Anyway I wanted to speack about the problem I had with a DVD backup made with Pinnacle Instant Copy 7.0... the audio is perfect but unfortunately the pictures is noisy... It's probably because of the resizing of the picture by 80% so that the DVD fit a DVD-R. But I think that a copy with DVDxCopy should work perfectly... I had no time to test it so far... |

It played all media CDR and CDRW without any problems, including, music CD, VCD, SVCD. It supported menus for svcd without problems. I haven´t tested DVDR and DVDRW yet. It doesn´t support mp3 files.
The bad thing was the remote control, it fell on the floor and broke. |

I has served well me since the summer of 2000, and iam so happy that i just happend to chose that player!
At that time i couldent dream about putting in anything else then original DVDs.
After a year i tried to burn and play ma first VCD and SVCD and it worked !
Last night i burned my first DVD+RW with DD5.1 and all, it worked as well !
After learning that newer and more "high-end" players dont play all that this one does !
Do i need MP3 playback? No! Not when a CD-R cost under half a dollar! And this player is for movies anyway.. |

Let me tell all that this breed of DVD player is without a doubt one of the best ever made by Pioneer. It'll play a ham sandwhich if i wanted it to. VCD, SVCD, DVD-r, DVD+r, DVD-RW, DVD+rw. You name it, it'll do it. It's so goo i'll be heartborken when it dies. The newer Pioneer DVD players will not play back SVCD encoded in PAL. It will go black and white. Now this doesn't mean that you can play back PAL DVD's if you get it modified to be region free. You will need a video converter unless you bought the European Pioneet DV-525. It has a switch in the back for PAL and NTSC.
I've burned just about everything and anything and it plays flawlessly. I've downloaded .bin files before extractine the MPEG and just renamed the bin file extention from .bin to .mpg. I've gone into Nero and of course you'll get a warning that it's not a proper VCD or SVCD, i just submit anyway and burn. Wouldn't ya know it plays anyway! I've used the cheapest of cheap cd-r's and plays perfectly EVERY time. I've tried this trick with .toc, .iso, .dat files and works again and again. I bet if i tried it on .vob files it would work too! You can get one of these puppies for under $100 used. I paid $150 in Feb 2000. Love it, Love it!! |

Bought this player as a "slightly higher than entry level" almost 3 years ago (late 1999). Has performed consistently over that time, playing all pre-recorded DVDs I could throw at it, as well as VCDs and SVCDs. (with no RCE problems)
But I was surprised when, having bought my new Sony DRX-500UL (DVD -/+ R/RW) that it managed to play every format. I certainly didn't expect that, as Sony seems to make comments all over the packaging like "this won't work on old players", etc.
So thumbs up for this aging, yet still very useful player. Would certainly consider a Pioneer next time! |

Purchased this dvd player 3 years ago, just got a Sony DRU-500A dvd +/- burner. Burned Meritline DVD+RW and DVD-RW media with the Sony DRU-500A, and both played successfully in the Pioneer DV-525.
I took downloaded AVI files and converted them to DVD format, all worked.
This is an old dvd player, but still plays everything I throw at it. I purchased it 3 years ago for around $130. A great price for a dvd player that has lasted me over 3 years! |

Accidentally recorded SVCD at 720x480 instead of 480x480 using TMPGEnc. It plays these perfectly. I've tried higher than normal SVCD encoding rates, but the picture begins to stutter if you go much above 2800 CBR.
I've used an endless variety of CD-R media, and it has never failed to play. This includes TDK, Maxell, Kodak, Imation, and a few generic brands. I use both Easy CD Creator and Nero for authoring (mostly Nero).
I have made audio, VCD, and SVCD disks onto CD-RW media, and it plays them just fine.
My computer's CD recorder records at 1X, 2X, 4X, and 8X. The Pioneer 525 doesn't seem to care at what speed the recording was made.
I'm about to get a Pioneer A05 burner, and hopefully it will play DVD-R and DVD-RW. |

I've had this player over 1 year. Unfortunately I can rarely get an svcd or vcd to work in it. Sometimes if I try to replay one of those by popping the disc in and out anywhere from 5 - 20 times, it will start to play.
Audio CD's used to play fine in this unit and then those stopped working as well. It continues to play retail DVD's fine though. I've always been happy when it does play.
I've been reading some of the reviews on other players and it seems that other Pioneers have problems where they lose some functionality over time. This is consistent with my experience. |

I origonally chose this deck because I wanted one that would support CD-R's and CD-RW's for my own music compilations, and make a reasonable job out of it too. It plays those compilations with impunity and sounds are superb as well.
For normal DVD playing this deck has taken virtually everything I've ever thrown at it, and only ever hiccuped at two discs, (1:R1 of 'Space Truckers' film was OK but documentary picture broke up, 2:R2 of 'The Mask' gave lip-sync and picture freezes). A feature of the firmware/hardware de-regionalising I had done on it is it disables Macrovision for PAL disks. Plus, as the hack is a hardware hack selected by remote, rather than a software hack by remote, it is immune to the so-called Region Coding Enhanced disks.
Now I'm into video-editing of home movies and bought myself a Pioneer A04 DVD-R/RW burner. I capture my Hi8 video with an 'ATI Radeon AIW card', edit it with 'EditStudio v3', and author the discs with Ulead's 'DVD-Movie-Factory'. Both DVD-R and DVD-RW play perfectly, inclusive of introductory videos, and multiple pages of chapter selection menus. When the film itself plays there are no pauses at chapter points either, which is also partly down to the authoring s/w, and no break-up of the picture.
This deck has made me a very happy person, and no amount of high end money could make me part with it!! |
