Plays DVD-RW 2X media from Princo that's 3 years old. Works with the TDK DVD-RW 4X, Memorex DVD-R, Sony DVD-R 16X, Verbatim DVR+R DL 6X.

This puppy was purchased at 2001 Audio Video a few weeks back and seems to work fine.
I've upgraded from a Panasonic that is at least 5 years old. What I have noticed is that this lil' puppy seems to be more sensitive to dust/dirt on the media than the Panasonic. Hooked via HDMI to an Elite Reciever.
The upconverting on this unit does a fairly decent job, but to be honest, this whole upconverting is a waste of money and geared towards marketing if anything.

In the manual it states that Divx or Xvid can only be played back on CD-R's; however it has been mentioned in this thread - if you can call it that, the Divx and Xvid formats can be played back on DVD media. Gotta test that one out.
Also, the manual does not mention that this unit supports PAL playback. Can someone confirm and if so what is the picture qaulity like, as many DVD players have that flashing bar at the top or sides!

All in all a decent player for the bucks - after taxes = $115.00.

BTW, do not be fooled in paying big bucks on HDMI cable. Complete scam, you should be looking at least $1.00 per foot but not more that $2.00. Bestbuy, Futureshop, 2001 all these big chain stores will tell you that you get what you pay for but digital cable is digital cable, it either works or does not. I have a 34Ft HDMI cable and works great and paid $40.00, no repeater.
Don't be fooled between Monster and your everyday generic brand as they are all the same.
HDMI limitation is length, and no matter how much you pay, length plays a final role the only way around this is to purchase a repeater or signal booster.

i have been using this player for like two weeks or so now and i'm totally satisfied.
it has superb picture quality, especially when connected to a hd-ready-tv (in my case toshiba 32wl66z). the upscaler works just fine for me, dvds and xvid/divx look much better in 720p/ 1080i.

i think it's quite difficult to find a player equal to the pioneer for this relatively low price.

I've been doing research for about a month. Finally I've made up my mind and bought myself this DVD Player rather the Sony NS76H (as it doesn't play DIVX movies. However users claimed it has superb pciture quality). It was quite straight forward to set it up with a conventional TV set. At first, I realized it rated at 110V rather than 240V (european). However this was solved fairly easily and it my fault after all:).

Tested this player for a day. The user friendly navigation menu allowed me to play CD-MP3s easily. Tested also with 3 XVID encoded movies burned on DVD-R. All played fine apart from one that paused for 5 seconds during playback and then resumed.

Picture quality is excellent for DVD and DIVX playback. Couldn't test on HDMI interface though yet. The remote control feels good and prominent buttons are well placed.

Some reviews stated that this player is not well suited for PAL playback. However for my untrained eyes - i am pleased with it.

The only drawback about this player is its slow DIVX loading time and a bit noisy playing a particular DVD-R. Have to test more on others DVDs.

Conclusion - I am pleased with this player and would recommend to others.

Comments:
I am not very technical. For general usage, this player is quite good.

Pros I have found:
* Plays Xvid files (had few that did not play but usually rare)
* Video looks good quality (on 50" DLP via HDMI)
* Lots of button on player (can do just about everything without remote)

Cons:
* Doesn't play mp3 in random order (shuffle play) - I really miss this feature
* Some menu items 'greyed out' during disc play - minor annoyance; need to get used to how the player works the menu.

Overall seems like a solid player for the price.

Update on Chipset.

I opened the case and checked it. 490V has MT1389FE, which make this whole packed bistreams problem even more confusing. All the other players based on MT1389FE chipset has no trouble handling this packed bistreams. I thought 588a has that problem due to its chipset, MT1389EE. Now that 490V has FE instead of EE and still has the same problem, I don' tnow what is going on?

Again shame on Pioneer to keep sending out players with this 2 year old problem. And shame on me for keep buying Pioneer.

I bought this one expecting Pioneer would fix the packed bitstream problem by now. Well, no they didn't. Shame on Pioneer.

Other than this major disappointment of annoying packed bitstream problem (and only one FF spped on divx files), the player is typical Pioneer.

Very good picture from DVD and Dvix

Vibrant Color

HDMI now available.

If you don't have a lot of divx files (with this packed bitstream feature), this will be perfect player for you. For me I am still considering whether I will keep it or return it like I did with dv-588a. You can't fix the packed bit problem with SW, but it will take too much time and $$ for blank CDR.
