It reproduces whatever kin of file. The search of a whatever point of an AVI simply giving the time is practically instant, only few second.
Only note is on the reproduction of the JPEGs. The function of zoom acts on the image shown to video and not on the original present on the disk, therefore an image from 3 megapixels or from 100kilopixel they have the same quality.
A resume would be also useful for the AVI, present function for the DVD, when a disk is inserted again.

Here is a helpful method to upgrade your standaone to a better firmare.
First, go to this site to download the right stuff (firmware / pioneer_1252XXXX).
http://mtz.softpedia.com/index.php?option=com_weblinks&catid=70&Itemid=4
For French people, choose in the initial settings an other language (it is not in the proposed list) and dial code "0618" (it will display "polish" but it is really french ! ).
Unfortunately, the OSD language will still in English because no change to French is possible.
I hope you enjoy now much more options in this great set (especially capability to play DTS on a simple stereo Tv set).

So far , from what i have tried it's a pretty good player and i am happy with my purchase.
I just have a problem with it, i can't seem to get it to display the DivX subtitles (str files named like the avi files).
Is there any accion one must do in order to activate this functionality? |

Thanks "Lord Tortoise" and "Donkey Kong",
now no more stuttering. Have been quite annoyed with the stuttering of some XviD-movies, had to convert them to other formats, but "Mpeg4 Modifier" helped to get rid of that problem. Just unpack the packed bitstream and save the file, burn it and enjoy. |

I just felt that I needed to update my previous post in which I complained a bit regarding the quality of divx/xvid playback. The fact is that after updating the player with the new mtz firmware, I must say that the heavy blocking effects that I noticed on the Pioneer and was way worse that when playing the same files on my Toshiba, have pretty much disappeared. Also the bad stuttery movements were due to some files being encoded with packed bitstream. As the previous poster wrote, this is easily detected and fixed with mpeg4modifier and after that the file runs smooth as silk. While this is fast and easy done, still this is somewhat of a drawback as packed bitstream runs great on some other standalone player (including the Toshiba).
In conclusion though this is a great player and superb value for the money. |

Good player for a good price!
I wrote this just to let you know that I also noticed the stuttering with some divx files, but when I used the MPEG4modifier this solved the problem.
So anyone out there with stuttering problems, try this first: http://www.moitah.net/ A few seconds work for hours of extra quality!
The divx playback quality is good enough for me, but than I must say that I have not seen other stand-alone divx players. Which perhaps is a good thing, because now I am just very happy with the quality of my Pioneer DV-470 :)
Cheers! |

I have read some remarks on this page regarding divx/xvid quality of playback and I simply have to step in and say OF COURSE the quality is also depending on the player. For sure some divx files are encoded in a crappy bitrate etc and will look terrible everywhere but with this player even divx/xvid files that look great on my other standalone divx player (Toshiba e-340) looks much worse on the Pioneer 470. The picture is very blocky on the Pioneer and the movement is considerably stuttery. I have no idea why Pioneer let this fault get through because in about every other aspect this player, The Pioneer 470, is GREAT. It plays pretty much every file you throuw at it, and of course dvd movies are great.
However, if you're purchasing this player to use it for divx files you better not compare it to players that do the job good. The Toshiba e-340 as I mentioned plays divx and xvid files like a dream (when using the same files on the same discs that played terrible on the Pioneer, the Toshiba displays zero stuttering and you'd have to press your face against the screen to notice ANY blocking etc.. ) but on the other hand the Pioneer does a better job not messing up audio and audio sync.
So thats that.
You can tell yourself that the divx files themselves look crappy but really thats not the case.. ( I kinda wish it was cause then this player would be a 10 =)
NOTE: I have not updated the firmware on the player tested and I have read that some of you may have experienced better quality after the update. The info pages about the updates (pioneer's own and Mtz v5) only talk about the added support for external subs though. (and the Mtz v5 about some minor bug fixes in the menus).. |

Now I have tried Xvids with different settings, it shows image on all types (qpel, gmc, packed bitstream (PBS))
Qpel - no problem
GMC - much jerkiness
PBS - no problem
Qpel & GMC - terrible
QPel & PBS - noticable jerkiness (not much)
All - horrible
above refers to Xvid 1.1Beta and profile @ level: AS @ 5
if you use both QPel and Packed bitstream, the first ten minutes of the encodes are quite annoying until you get used to the frame skip about every 1 second. Especially on scenes with huge moving objects, where it is most noticable. When there's only talk going about there's hardly any frameskipping.
Divx 5.x plays fine at Home multimedia profile. |

Ordered this player from a swedish WEB-site (www.fyndborsen.se) on Sunday and recieved it on Tuesday by mail. I ordered the Multiregion-version (region-free) for no extra fee, and the postage was ~10$ when paying by credit-card.
When I tried it, I was astonished by the quality of the picture, no matter the type of media played. Even though I have an old TV-set the picture was excelent. Have only had time to try Original DVD's, DVD-R and DVD-RW discs, but these played without any problem (Verbatim 8x R/RW burned at 8x with NEC ND-2500A). As a test I burned a DVD-RW with all kind of files (DivX, Xvid, mpg, avi, mp3) in different folders, and they all played fine.
My player came with the latest firmware (2.09), but I would like to get the SACD/DVD-Audio support as well as improved playback of DivX/Xvid (not that I noted any blockiness) etc.
My question is wheather I can upgrade the firmware with "Pioneer575_1252_v5_Mtz" (!575!) found on "http://mtz.softpedia.com/index.php?option=com_weblinks&catid=70&Itemid=4" to get SACD/DVD-Audio support WITHOUT removing my region-free setting/tweak in the process.
Anyone who has tried this with a region-free bought player? |

Hi !
I start to say that I have several dvd player including a JVC dr-mv1 recorder a Philips 737 and a Pioneer 444; the Pioneer is by far the best in quality so I have it conected to the Philips 37/9946 Plasma; anyway I would like to have the functionality of the 737 (divx/mpg player, jpg viewer etc) .
Bought this player after consider between 470 and 575 as it seems the 470 handles better DL media .
I was worried about picture/sound quality compared with the 444 because altough is a older model it seems to be much better than recent ones; well.. I'm not worryed no more as the quality in dvd is even slightly better !
The player does a great job with divx/xvid files and subtitles but was greatly improved with the firmware upgrade sujested by other users, specialy the subtitles (very small with original firmware)
I have not tested extensively the player with vcd/svcd etc but I bet it does a great job with those discs also .
Double layer discs are read as normaly dvd-r, no problem at all (!!)
Also had not experienced problems with cheap media (I use both cheap and expensive media as the 444 as NO PROBLEM with ANY media) I believe this will not be a problem also with this player .
The only handycap I found so far is that the drive is a little bit noisy in some points (not always) (much like Philips 737). Also 1 of several movies I saw in Divx (Galactica (2003) 3 hour movie in 2 700mb cd!) had ocasionaly glitches; other movies played OK .
Overall is another great player by Pioneer (now I'm defenitivly in love with Pioneer's quality!) very versatily as it seems to really playes everything and with superb picture/sound quality !
It costs 150 Euros here in Portugal, more or less the same as Philips, much much cheaper than Jvc recorder but also much much better player in everything . |

I used to own a Yamada 6600 but it was real flakey build quality, the tray kept jamming and finally last week it went up in smoke (yes, opening it up showed the main chipset burnt out).
So I read the review comments on this site and brought a Pioneer DV-470. The build quality looks much better than Yamada but sadly I have found a number of disks/content types that my Yamada played OK but are not handled by the Pioneer.
Particularly I have some XviD files with both GMC and QPel enabled (according to GSpot) and my Yamada played them OK but my new Pioneer struggles and the picture gets chopy and the audio gets out of synch.
Also the laser cannot be that great, the Yamada tolerated some defects/scratches on disks but the same disks that last week played with some glitches on Yamada now fail completely in the Pioneer.
Apart from the above two situations it played everything I threw at it (DivX 3,4,5, XviD, MPEG 1&2 etc). So overall not a bad player...just wish QPel and GMC support was better (and that fast forward could do more than 2x).
Also worth noting that I upgarded the firmware to get SACD, DVD-Audio and subtitle support. |

Great player!!
I had the Sony NS 585 wich also is a very good player, but changed to this on because the 585 didn't support the DivX-format.
This one does!
I tryed a DVD+R with 3 Xvid-movies on and got a little bit dissapointed.
I updated the player with "Pioneer470_1252_v5_Mtz" and now the picture are much better on the Xvid movies much less blocks!!!
Thanx for the Pioneer470_1252_v5_Mtz!!! |

Great player!!!! It plays everything i put into the tray.
No problems with DivX and xVid (i tried many combinations of mp3 and ac3 on various supports)
The reader has no problem to recognize a support (DVD and CD) with mp3, jpeg and Divx togheter.
A little noise when it reads the TOC, but it's very little.
It came with 2.09 firmware. I've made the upgrade with firmware from MTZ. It works well!
Go to Softpedia site (http://mtz.softpedia.com/index.php) and download the file "Pioneer470_1252_v5_Mtz" from the firmwares page (this is good for region 2).
Only 1 bad point : until now there is no way to obtain a region free (there is only the impossible hack on this page)
Bye :) |

Bought this from Pixmania Europe and received it at Greece.Superb player, even though i still didn't tried it with Greek subs-i saw though a patch for that from a friend from Cyprus.
Only minor problem i found was that in the begining it had to be manually set to PAL - at least for my TV - cause the 23 frames Xvid 'n Divx were black and white. It troubled me for 2-3 days, but i finally found and fixed it.
9 for that minor prob. |

EXCELLENT DivX/Xvid/Mpeg-PLAYER
Excellent! Thanks Pioneer!
I bought a Philips DVP 720SA, a player that really disappointed me (low soundvolume, ticking noise from the player when playing DivX/XviD-movies). So I changed into Pioneer 470. Man, this is the thing. It plays all DivX/XviD/Mpeg-files I've tried so far. Subtitles are excellent (.sub and .srt), clear and easy handled. Use of many diffrent subtitles with different languages are working fine.
Important to mention is that, when quality of the DivX/Xvid-movies are questionable, it is of course NOT the players fault, its due to badly coded files. The player itself has no problems with playing them. When pausing a DivX/Xvid-movie, and the resuming the movie again, the audio-sync might faulter for 1-2 seconds, but then will be restored to normal, not a problem.
Have tried to burn several DivX/Xvid/Mpeg-movies onto a RW+DVD, without any trouble.
Only thing I question, are the menues. When navigating among the files on a CD/DVD, the menu only shows about 8 digits. Would have been clearer with more, but its not a big issue.
The drive is quiet and almost not noticeble. The player is fairly small and thin, pretty nice looking (of course, all accordning to my personal taste). If you're looking for at decent DVD-player with DivX/Xvid-capability, I surely recommend this excellent product. |

I bought this player for my parents, as a christmas gift. It succeeded my expectations, it plays everything I want it to play. I had to scour the internet to find info on this player, I wanted to know exactly what kind of formats it would play, and how the quality would look, but I didn't find any good source of information. However, the posts in this board was pretty helpful to me. Therefor, I'm going to list all the formats that I've tried, and some vital information, so that others can use this information when hesitating wether to buy this player or not.
Divx3.11 - works great, although the picture is blocky, but it's not the players fault, if the source is crap to begin with, the player can't do anything about it, and divx3.11 looked good until we laid our eyes on Divx5x. Flawless motion.
Divx4 - Decent quality, a bit better than 3.11, but still a bit blocky. Flawless motion.
Divx5.x - Superb quality, the motion can seem a bit choppy when the movie switches scenes, other than that it's top notch.
XviD1.x - I've tried the following configurations:
B-VOP on, QPL off, GMC off, AC3 off - The motion was choppy but watchable (if you're not really cranky like me;), This was due to B-VOP being enabled. The picture quality was great, and the sound was good as well. Framesize: 576x304 Framerate: 23.976 MP3: Variable 128kbit/s
B-VOP off, QPL off, GMC off, AC3 off - Magical, zero choppiness, amazing picture quality and good sound.
Framesize: 576x240 Framerate: 23.976 MP3: Variable - 138kbit/s
This player is supposed to be able to play GMC and QPL as well.. but I doubt it would play them flawlessly. I'm eager to try it out though.. haven't had the time yet. I've tried AC3, and it works.
SVCD - I can't believe how good the quality looks, it's amazing. The sound rocks, you can switch between the sound-channels. When you watch a SVCD with hardcoded subtitles, you can sometimes see a "echo" of the subtitle in the middle of the screen, very faint, like a watermark. I don't know what causes this, but it's not anything that really bothers you.. again, if you're not REALLY picky.
VCD - I didn't expect much of VCD.. But the quality was actually pretty good, along with the sound. The VCD I tried was a "Thai-VCD", a DVD ripped to VCD.
DVD - Excellent quality and sound, just as I expected. But then again, this is a DVD-player, I would be surprised if it would have problems playing DVDs flawlessly.
I popped in various .avi .mpeg .mpg .wmv music videos, and clips into the player, the player managed to play them all, some blocky, some perfect.. It all depends on the source.
The Pioneer DV-470 is a really good player, it uses the MT1389EE chipset, which is clearly capable if playing most of the formats out there.
Not that I've experience any bugs or the likes yet, there's always things that you can improve with a player, that's why I think it's a shame that Pioneer doesn't have better support in the form of firmware-releases for their players, Like KiSS. I was pleased when they released a firmware with subtitle-support for divx/xvid though.
I haven't had the chance to try .ogm/.ogg yet, ogg vorbis hasn't really been of interest to me.. I still prefer xvid.
If don't want to spend a fortune buying one of those really expensive players, Pioneer DV-470 is a really good alternative, great picture quality, great sound quality and a really low price, considering what it can do.
Hope this was of some help.
Note: The divx3-5 movies I tried were all 650MB files ripped straight from DVD with higest quality possible in regards to size. The XviD1.X was 700MB files. |

Platinum CD-RW: U-play, P-play.
TDK DVD-RW: U-play, P-play.
TDK DVD+RW: U-play, P-NOT PLAY.
Maxell DVD-R: U-play, P-play.
Maxell DVD-RW: U-play, P-NOT PLAY.
Memorex DVD-RW: U-play, P-NOT PLAY.
