I tried burning (software copytodvd) "Verbatim Double Layer DVD+R 8.5GB" media in my Liteon 832s burner with bitsetting the booktype to DVD-ROM (software KProbe2) before - it worked !!!!!!
The Pioneer DV-454 has NO problems with this media. |

not a good player, especially playing on a projector(the picture is not as clear as i can see it now with my new philips sa963). the main problem was that it could usually stop playing during playback with several dvd-r or dvd with scratches .
the sound is good anyway...
after 3 months it stopped playing my cds. it could only recognise dvds.

He provado muchas copias de DVD-R que he hecho con la Pioneer A04) con el siguiente resultado:
- Los DVD-R Klooner (1x) no funcionan nada bien (me parece que es el soporte que es malísimo).
- Los DVD-R Woxter (1x) funcionan es su mayoria.
- Los DVD-R PRINCO (1x y 2x) funcionan a la perfección, pero con una salvedad: Si intentas apurar al máximo la capacidad (o sea 1589 MB) cuando las pelis llegan al final empieza a ratear y no acaba de leerlos bien.
Las pelis las recomprimo con el DVD2ONE para que me quepan en un solo DVD-R, y para que la calidad sea lo mejor posible utilizo bitrate variable y apuro el soporte al máximo.
Si alguien sabe como solucionarlo ya me lo comunicará.

I use DVDshrink, menu's at 50%, 1 language set at 50% and rest = video at minimum shrinkingto suit a full dvd.
Burn to dvd-r(sony)at 2x, dvd+rw (ricoh) at 2.4x, dvd-rw (imation)at 1x and (verbatim) at 1x without any problem with Nero 6.0.0.19 simply choosing dvd-video and keep other presettings of
nero. Burner : sony DRU500A driver 20g.
Shrinking and burning at 2.4x takes 60 min.
All play perfectly on Pioneer 454.
Player 454 itself had in the beginning now and then problems at the point passing single layer to second layer. Now after 1 year, everything works perfectly. |

I got this player because of the good reviews. I must say that if it works it works great. Verry good picture. Slow remote reaction.
After a few days and playing only a few dvd's, the problems began. Sometimes I had to reload the dvd 10 times before de player would recognise the disc. After some more dvd's changing layer could also result in not finding the dvd anymore.
The whole optical mechanism was changed. It played fine for some months. Last week i watched "Time machine". After 37 minuts the picture freeses for some seconds and from then on it skips alsmost every minute. Side A of the "Daft Punk" dvd doesn't play at all.
Both discs i've tried on 2 other "cheap - unknown brand" dvd players and on a pc dvd-rom. The play perfect.
So this will be the second repear in less than a year... |

i would higly reccomend this player ive had lods in the past ,i don,t know if it,s macrovision disabled but don,t care and at £140 quite reasonably.

Have tested everything on it!!!
Plays just fine all kinds of VCD/SVCD/DVD recordings!
Even unfinished discs, which failed to complete in NERO (UDF 1.02 mode), it plays them until the end!!!
What can i say??
I am thrilled!!!
I only want it, because i use it for DVD playback, but some old VCDs and SVCDs i had, work now better than ever!
Superb disc compatibility: SONY DVD-RW/+RW/-R, MAXELL -R, SENTINEL -R, TDK -R/-RW!
No glitches, perfect sound, sharp image!!!
Stop reading for anything else!!!

Ich habe den DV 454 seit kurzem erst, das Teil ist auch echt spitze, spielt alles ab vcd, svcd, xsvcd. Aber miniDVD`s will er nicht!!
Wie bekommt man den denn dazu die abzuspielen?
Oder kann er sie doch nicht abspielen?
Zögert nicht mir zu schreiben!

Iv used DATAWRITE red and 4x yellow.
They all work like a sharm.
Also tried bulqpak and maxell and they are great aswell.
No problems at playing vcd svcd or dvd.
It swollows everything perfect.
Its the best player you can get out there for that low price really. |

Bought this player about a year ago. After a few weeks the first problems arose. DVD's were not recognised or stopped at the layer change.
Got it repaired and played ok for a while.
After a few months same problem. And several dvd's started playing worse then a divx 5 on a pentium 300.
Got it repaired. Came home, problem with bad picture and skipping did'nt occur anymore, it simply refuses to play half of my dvd collection.
If this is Pioneer quality, definitively no more pioneer for me.
One good point though, if it plays, it plays almost everything you want (vcd, mp3, svcd,...) |

| It takes some time to start the disc (CD or DVD). But who cares? Just insert a disc and go and get your candy and it'll be ready then you get back. |

Nochmal eine Bewertung in Deutsch:
Ich bin mit dem DV-454 voll zufrieden. Er spielt für mich alle wichtigen Formate ab:
- DVD+R/RW
- CD-R/RW
- VCD/SVCD
_Alle_ von mir getesteten Rohling wurden problemlos erkannt. ( Verbatim, Maxdata, HP, Ricoh, JVC...) und auch die billig CD-R/RW akzeptierte er.
Beim Experimentieren habe ich aber festgestellt, dass er sehr sensible ist, was die Bitrate bei SVCD angeht. Sobald diese höher als 2500 kbit/s ist, bleibt bei mir der Screen schwarz. Somit ist er unbrauchbar für XVCD/XSVCD. Halte ich mich an die bei DVDRHELP angegebenen SVCD Specs, spielt er alles ohne Rucken, Aussetzter oder sonstige Störungen ab. Was mir besonders gefällt ist das sehr leise Laufwerk und das schicke Design. Die Bildqualität ist in meinem subjectiven Vergleich zu anderen DVD-Playern deutlich besser. Auch die Zeit, die vom schliessen des Trays bis zum Abspielen vergeht, ist top - ca. 5 sec ! Auch der Preis ist in Ordnung - 160 €. Ich kann den Player nur empfehlen. Interesanterweise ist die Unterstützung von SVCD offiziel von Pioneer nicht gegeben - Es steht sogar in der Anleitung, dass ausdrücklich nur VCD supported sind. Aber mit den o.g. Einschränkungen spielt meiner alle SVCD's ab. Den VCD-Header Hack muss ich nicht einsetzten. |

I burned DVD+R and DVD+RW with joliet. We must pay attention to the process of vob's creation. I do it with DVDSrink and then I burn it with Nero, Iso Level 1, 9660, UDF and JOLIET. I played on the DVD and i saw the all movie without errors and breaks. I can move forward and back, change to another chapter without problems.
Sometimes when DVD have protection I have to work first with DVD Decrypter and then with DVDSrink but I Burn the DVD+r/RW with the same settings.
The quality of the movies is very good.
I have tried with another process for creating vob´s and the same settings here describe for burning and when I tried to play the movie he recognize the DVD but didn't play it. |

| I have spent a lot of time just like you guys reading all of the comments for different players, I like many of you have now firmly come to no conclusion!!! its either manufacturers tolerances or editing software that make the same machine behave differently. I have ran vcd, svcd with and without selectable menus, dvd -r, dvd multiregion and jpegs on the disk using the ulead software. ALL passed with very good quality. I can highly recommend this machine i bought mine from richer sounds jan 2003 after taking my toshiba 220e back because of freezing svcd disks. |

La lecture de DVD-R/-RW est impeccable. C'est simple il avale toutes les marques: de princo à verbatim...
Cependant il faut graver les DVD-R/-RW en mode UDF et "disc at once", quelque soit le soft utilisé.
C'est tout!

IMHO there is no need to burn as DVDROM (UDF).
He can read DVD+r and DVD-R when burnt as DVDvideo in nero, but you must turn of Joliet.
All the DVDs i have burnt do work on the 454.
For all who's movies don't play should check with Nero infotool what the filesystem is.
There should be stated that the filesystem is ISO9660,UDF and NOT ISO9660,joliet,UDF. |
