| I can confirm that the NTSC/PAL conversion mentioned earlier DOES in fact work. Just make sure the DVD player is off, hold the forward button and keep holding it while you turn the DVD player ON. The display of the DVD player will show the output system (Auto/NTSC/PAL). |

Mine broke down!
Now it only play's CD/MP3/VCD/SVCD.
Any DVD won't play any more. Spinns and spinns then the drawer opens (2 years of moderate usage)
Repairs would have been €150! New is cheaper now. |

Hey!
I bought the dvd the first week it came to a Swedish
shop.I think its a great player.
I would have given it 10 points if the "True Surround"
choise in the setup have been able to save.
I cant find the "save" alternative in the setup and i use it in "Expert Mode???" and that means that
every time i start the dvd-player i got to go in the setup and change to True Surround.

many strange comments here now, how can someone claim it plays MPEG-ISO and mp3-ID3 support? Is there new firmware or what? Doesnt sound like the same player to me.
Wanted to add, even if someone already did, that the PAL/NTSC multiconvert only work for VCD, its not supported in MPEG-2.
Anyone had a DV444 needing service? Mine is getting old, as you can see from the price i paid, and it still play perfect with any media, the picture and sound is still better than far the most new players up to $150. |

| For the price I've paid against the performance it delivers...I think it is a great player, sleak and smart. The best for me: it has progressive scanning and delivers a great image quality. No flickering at all and good image enhancement resources like edge enhancement, gamma correction, etc. The audio player is good and fair and delivers good sound if connected to a reasonable power amp (mine is a RXV 800 Yamaha). My advice: if you still find it you will get a good price as it is discontinued for more-than-a-good-performance. |

I got a laptop with a DVD-R/RW drive the other week and have been trying to copy a couple of dvd's purely as an experiment.
I have been using DVD Shrink software to copy the files from the disc in the first instance.
The laptop came with NTI writing software and whilst it would write okay the disc wouldn't play in the dvd player.
I switched to Nero software to create the disc and it all works fine now,weird.
I have only tried TDK RW discs so far and will try some R's at some ponit. |

I would have given this player a 10 if it were not for the PAL problems. It can't play PAL DVD/SVCD.
Plays everything I've tried espesically Princo 1x printable DVD-R.
I saw PAL/NTSC conversiona tip from someone in this forum, but I couldnt get it to work! |

Dvd an cd player is very very good.
I have tested an SVCD 480x576; interlaced; 25 fps; CBR 2400 kbps; audio 44,1 kHz, 224 kbps, stereo. Result - OK.
Mp3 I have tested on 128 - 320 kbit/s and i have some problem.

Very good picture and sound, never had problems playing DVD in the 18 months i had it, SVCD can freeze up for a little second at low bitrates, i encode with 700 as minimum bitrate for VBR SVCD to avoid it.
Tip about NTSC/PAL conversion:
- Default is set to Auto, it will then output the system the disk is recorded in. To change, turn off, hold in the forward button on the player while turning it on, repeat this till you see the desired output system (Auto/NTSC/PAL) in the display.

Plays everything I have tried, including non standard svcd's.
A lot of people complain about slow fast forward and rewind, but if you press 1 instead of play on a (s)vcd so you can see the counter, then look how far it fast forwards in a given time you will see that fast forward 1 = roughly 10x, and fast forward 2 = roughly 20x.

| Bought it 1 year ago, never had a problem. For people having problems with SVCD at low bitrate, I advise to browse doom9 SVCD forum (a lot of posts on the subject around June-July 2002 timeframe). I definitively solved the problem using I-Author to mux. No longer any video freeze even at 300 kb/s bitrate. Only remaining issue is temporarary loss of A/V sync (usually a few seconds) when switching between tracks. Also saw that I-Author muxing creates video freezes ... when playing on a software player on the PC. Hope this helps, Bill |

Plays brand CD-R's perfectly. Plays VCD's perfectly. I have been having some problems lately with SVCD's. I encode a lot of DIVX/XViD with DVD2SVCD with the default bitrate settings i.e 300kb/s min 2530kb/s max. What I've discovered is that when the bitrate drops below a certain level it freezes. Audio is no problem. I have no problem with maxing out the bitrate, just when it drops. What I wanna know is if anyone else use DVD2SVCD and what settings you use.

I just read all the comments about the Pioneer dv-444 (I've had it for a year now)... and the least I can say is that I don't agree with the posts about SVCD compatibility.
Don't get me wrong the video and sound quality is perfect for DVDs... I just have problems with SVCDs playback.
I tried a lots of SVCDs (some I encoded myself and others my friends did) and most of them do not play properly on the DV-444.
I would reconsider our ability to encode SVCDs if I couldn't play them on other players but they DO play perfectly (Thomson DTH-5400 and Philips 711).
SVCD: - Picture freezes a lot.
- Sound is OK (I made some with 2 soundtracks and they play perfectly (except when you change from one track to the other it takes a little while to catch-up with the video and resynchronize)
- Fast forward and fast backward work but they are way TOO slow (something like 2x when on the same disc it can be up to 8x with Thomson DTH-5400 (NO fast forward/backward with the Philips 711))
- I read something about the bitrates and tried to encode with a minimum vidoe bitrate of 700kbps and maximum of 2300kbps (some specs: CCE 2.50 encoder, burnt with Nero (watch-out the speed used to burn them 12x or 16x seems to be the maxiumum for an optimum playback quality)).
- The player doesn't accept all quality of CD-R (gold and silver ones are better).
Sometimes I have one SVCD that plays perfectly but I can't find what is the difference with the others I encoded.
I would consider any of your comments.
P.S.: Trying to find a good DVD player that supports ALL SVCDs and also has fast forward/backward and MP3 long filenames... any advice? |

Best player i have ever seen! Plays almost anything! It's succesor (454) should be able to do the same stuff.. If you can still find the 444 for a nice price (it's an old model) then buy it, you won't be dissapointed!
I compared the video quality of multiple players on the same tv-set and the 444 wins it easily!
Only thing that would be nice is id3-tag support for mp3's cause the menu only shows 8 or 10 characters :( |

| Plays just about anything I have put in it CD-R CD-RW Cheap DVD-R DVD-RW. Very pleased with this unit, I would like to have in black though. Haven’t been able to find anything it wouldn’t play. This unit was purchased after I returned the newer Pioneer model DV354 which was supposed to play DVD-R’s. Wouldn’t read any of them baulked at all of them. It just gave a message of “ Can’t play Disc”. Then I tried a JVC XVS400 which was better than the DV354 but disappointing as well. It would play about half of my DVD-R’s. It refused to play any of my split DVD-R’s which were split with IFO Edit correctly. Now I’m off to the store for a second unit for the bedroom. |
