Have some playback problems with some cheap DVDs that were burned at speed higher that 2.4x. Good picture quality and sound. The cons: Bad remote control and poor MP3 filename lenght support (8 char. max).

When I purchased it I got it from a place called World-Import,they specialize in Multi Region DVD Players so the Pioneer DV-440 was modified when I got it. This player is amazing It plays it all..Everything I listed is what plays on the machine...Great......

CVD? $? over 1 year 9 of 10 MP3 long filename MP3 ID3 TAG Comments: I was just seeing some comments about the fact that this player does not play all SVCDs thrown at it. That is true. BUT the issue is known : the movie will skip is the bitrate on the movie is too low, I know that is a pain in the a$$. Just put the lowest bitrate to be at least 800 per/s, it didn't change the fact that i could still burn SVCDs made to fill out a 800mb CD, a little overburning is needed some time, that is all. If you follow that, ALL SVCDs made will be playing perfect in that player. The MP3 playback is great on that player, overall a great player at the time..

For some unknown reason, it is vastly inferior to other cheaper, better Pioneer players. First some simple complaints: 1. Even though it advertises Progessive Scanning, it doesn't really do it. Pop in any high bitrate DVD and you'll see. 2. Very disappointing as to have no PAL->NTSC conversion! Even lesser Pioneer players have this feature. 3. MP3 works on most streams, but only 8 chars. display. 4. Any 5.1 audio cannot be boosted if downsampling to 2.0 audio (which applies to most of us not using a high-tech Dolby Digital Receiver). This means you have to crank your stereo system and TV volume up to max just to hear the dialog. Specific complaints: 1. Does *NOT* play all VCD/SVCDs ok. It is very picky on playing them, often stuttering/skipping all the way through the disc. This applies to even very low bitrate streams. 2. Don't go too high on your custom SVCD bitrates. I've found total bitrates (video+audio) over 2650 cause it to stutter, pixelate and go off sync. 3. For any VCD/SVCD stream it hiccups on, the sync will go completely out of whack. Only sometimes can you PAUSE and then PLAY again to get it back in sync. 4. If the hiccup is too bad, it will just stop playing, instead of passing over the problem to find a better stream. 5. I have had little success with playing VCDs/SVCDs on any CD-RW with this player. I have tried Maxell 4x CD-RW, SKY 4x CD-RW, MAXDATA 4x CD-RW, Verbatim 4x CD-RW, & Samsung 2x CD-RW. For instance, buring the same stream on the same CD-RW disc will result in skipping/biccups in different places during playback. All burns tested on a Liteon 52x32x52, Pioneer DVD-A06, and HP 1100 Plus 4x. Hope this helps some of you out there pass this one on for a better Pioneer. mGuru

I bought this one for MP3 support and it works great. Excellent sound using the optical cable to my Pioneer DTS/Dolby Digital reciever. Just bought a Plextor DVD+R/+RW burner and plays both formats great. Not complaints whatsoever!!! BTW 8 characters is a standard for MP3 name display!!

This Player does not play all SVCDS after all, however it should play most of them you need to mess with aspect Ration settings ( each one of them ( to find right one ). Yes This sucks right after i posted the previous psting i started running in to svcds that would not play no matter what i would do so i went out and bought a apex 1100w and made it my primary player and totally forgot about the pioneer. The Pioneer player is great for the mp3z and dvds but if your a vcd/svcd user i would not recommend this player. P.S. walmart has the Norcent DP300 dvd player i just bought it the other day it plays everything i throw at it as far as vcd & svcds go and it even plays mpeg & mpeg2 files without even converting them!!!

CVD? $175 N/A No rating Comments: i'm back . . . this player will not play my latest svcd acquisition, and i have a tv that has played countless PAL svcd and vcd titles. this one new title - the one - i had to reload, to make sure. but no go. other than that, the Pioneer 440 occ. jitters or stutters on a svcd converted from xvid/divx, but i assume thats because of the codecs used in the title's conversion. i live in NTSC land, so i guess i'm glad i have an old school apex that WILL play this newest of ctp's releases ;)

So far everything I have tested on it, that I have created worked except for one thing, "MP3 on a DVD-R", I have about 10 brand new DVD-R coasters. I have tried the following software to BURN MP3 on DVD-R disks, they were NERO 5, Roxio 5 & MusicMatch (latest versions). Some clarity, all the software above created "MP3 on DVD-R" disks but the machine does not play it, even though all disks plays fine on my PC. By the way MP3 to CR-R & CD-RW works fine on the machine aswell as my PC.

It plays VCDs without any trouble and SVCDs if you keep the bitrate within limits listed elsewhere in these reports. I recommend this player!

It is a slight pain to have to adjust the settings every time you want to watch svcd but so what! Its a name brand player and i aint about to complain. and questions feel free to ask cdkreator@hotmail.com

CVD? $175 N/A 10 of 10 JPG/JPEG Comments: This player has played every DVD+R I have thrown at it burned with the HP DVD200i. I have only tested the HP brand DVD+RW with it, and had no problems. Much better performance than with ANY DVD-R I burned with the Panasonic LF-D311 I had. Most DVD-R's burned with the Pansonic wouldn't even load. Those that did experienced momentary screen freezes.

If you plan to create your own DVD then I would advise you to stay away from this model. I was extremely unhappy. P.S. no problems found with Pioneer 343

Overall a good player I just wish it would play svcd.

Regular SVCD work fine. But the Theater Version SVCD just rolls on my TV (Likes its PAL version) I've tryin re-encoding and different CDR software. Nothing Works.. I now hate this Piece of Junk. I feel i over paid for it. When i can go by a APEX 4th Gen system.

It seems to be a problem when burning at very fast speeds (IE 32x). Its a great player all around, I would buy and suggest this to anyone.

This has played every VCD i've thrown at it, and played an mp3 cd i tried, but i didnt play around with it much. I didn't like the display for the mp3's but sound was pretty good. Resumes on DVDs and VCDs, but It has not resumed for any SVCDs i've tried. I got a copy of an SVCD that im assuming is in PAL cuz the player hated it, showed up all scrambled and jumpy. Apart from that, its been an all around great player. I havent tried many different brands of CD-R, I use either Imation or Memorex. Highly recommend this player.

CVD? $143 N/A 10 of 10 Comments: played dvd/vcds fine. no complaints. layer change is slow. not a big deal. played MP3 196 VBR fine. ff works in mp3 as well. very quite during playback a bit noisy when loading disks. disks load fast mp3/dvd/vcd. random function can be more random. the same disk will play the same "random" sequence. can be corrected by pressing random button on the remote. some people have reported scan lines. haven't seen those. i have jvc 27D201. no big complaints. i'm keeping mine.

CVD? $143 N/A No rating Comments: All I can say is this is a fantastic dvd player..i returned my apex ad-800 for this baby..i have a pioneer dv-525 and everything i throw at it works so i desided to go with another pioneer for my other tv...The apex couldnt read 5 of the 20 vcds i tested..i have yet to see any svcd or vcd not work in the pioneer players...Apex is a terrible dvd player very cheaply made. All i can say is get a pioneer and you wont be sorry!!!!!!! I rate it a 10
